I know ranking Music Directors is a very subjective endeavor. Each of us have our favourites; therefore, the rankings are bound to be different across the board. The reason I came up with the ranking is for the Discussion Group (DG) to think and talk about other music directors, not just one MD. I am sure other MDs have produced some wonderful scores that might have inspired us in some way or the other.
I guess, along with the rankings, I should have asked the DG to explain what they like in a music director and why they have placed them in a particular position. This might have generated a better discussion and provoked a deeper thinking, rather than coming full circle to the no.1 MD.
I consider myself an average music fan. I never had any formal schooling in music. I don't know much about scales and ragas. I know and understand music only based on the impact it has on me, such as the emotions and feelings that stir in me when I listen to a song.
If you had asked me eight... nine years back, "who my favorite MD was", I would have said with out hesitation "of course AR Rahman". But then again, nine years back, I wasn't a big fan of "Duet" either. My musical interest were purely rythm based. To me good songs were the ones with hip hop beats. Today, my musical interests have changed, could have matured. I look for various things in a song, not just beats. I look for the melody, the flow, the transitions, orchestration, instruments used, and nuances.
When Thalapathi was released, I couldn't understand why people were raving about "Sundari Kannal oru". Today, its one of my favorite songs and every other day I listen to "How to name it". I placed Illayaraja on top my list because his songs to me are timeless, and there are so many of them. I never get tired of listening to his songs - the melody, the variety and the subtle things like modulation, humming are some of few things that endears me to his music. I wish I was learned to appreciate his music better; but then again, although, my appreciation for its complexity might change, but I am not sure if my appreciation for the music as is (feelings) would change.
I like AR Rahman for the cleaness of his songs. They are well engineered; even though he uses electronics, his songs do not sound cheesy (may be because he uses live instruments as well). He is a master of what he does. His music has many layers. I like many of his songs for their melody, but like many here, it was the rythm that endeared me to his music initially. The reason I placed Rahman beneath IR is that many of Rahman's songs do not have the lasting impact of IR's songs. After some listeninng they even annoy me. Also I think ARR has a long ways to go (in terms of numbers) to become a master of music (for lack words) than just master of sound. This is not to say that ARR is incompetent, "Duet" is one of my favorite albums, its just that I feel he needs to travel some distance musically.
Ah! Harris Jeyraj, a man of many controversies. Whatever said and done, I like all his albums released thus far, even his so called flops "Pepsi" and "Kovil". Minnale - I must have listened to it thousand times. In Harris' songs I look forward to small things like humming, interludes (i love them), flow and transitions. I don't know what else to say, his music doesn't bore me.
Rest to follow...

I am only joking, friends. ranking is just personal indicator only. every composer is great as long as they make original, human and enjoyable music. Rahman has enormous talent, but i am just saying consistency of quality, and quantity is not there like veteran composers.
but, here is another interesting parallel and we can say this about IR also:
http://us.rediff.com/sports/2004/jun/23scolari.htm
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari says there will never be another Pele.
Asked about comparisons between his fellow Brazilian and England teenager Wayne Rooney, Scolari said: "One is black, the other is white.
"I think Rooney is a good player, but Pele? There will only ever be one in the world."
"You couldn't even make another with a computer."

My ranking is
1) IR - Nobody can do what this single man has achieved in any sphere in terms of quality and quantity. For every good song of any MD in IFM, I can show 10 great songs from IR's khazana
2,3.....10 - do I care?

IR,mr.dubya......MR.CMU, urs was a good posting....but even u too have written like "THE TYPICAL I-KNOW-MUSIC" ppl. who dunt dare to find fault with IR........u guys always write good things abt. ARR but always place him below IR which really irritates me.....y compare them first of all.....do ppl. in mumbai compare SD.Burman with ARR???they know ARR is gr8 in his own ways.....they respect it...they love him for being an Indian and patriotic one at that.......Tamilians need to learn a lot from other state ppl. who support their man to the core........WISH ARR WAS A MAHRASHTRIAN.......

Maddy,
IR is a Thamizhan too.. :)
The basic differentiation between ARRFs and IRFs when it comes to newtfmpage is...
Musical Knowledge.
Another important factor is age, but let's not delve into that.. :)
The folks who can actually differentiate one raga from another and launch into superb observations of musical nuances, tend to choose IR coz of the sheer quantity of brilliant work in carnatic based melodies and (i wanted to avoid this!!) more probably coz they belonged to that generation. I mean, IR's not called a living legend for nothing!
But when it comes to Rahman fans, 90% of them in the forum are youngsters who are not as musically literate as these stalwarts. So they tend to like songs by the feel of it. They "listen" w/ their heart, and not w/ their brain. That, IMO, is Rahman's strength. The "touch" that tends to appeal to people.
So I don't think it's fair to impose one's belief of a particular MD's superiority on another.
Let's jus rank MDs based on our opinion of them and not expect others to think along the same lines! :)

Vagabond,
I dont think it's necessary to prove any point!
Illayaraja was and is a maestro... And nothing critics say can take away Rahman's contribution and genius away from TFM.
The problem is, someone posts a one-off comment.. someone else retaliates.. and then the comments snowball into a major fight.
Every single name u mentioned there are decent folks, but led to express their feelings rather a bit too harshly.
I do believe Ferrari and Jacky have never posted nething obscene. Double meaning irukkum, but never vulgar or in-ur-face.
Maddy, Dinesh and T retaliate a bit too strongly when someone comes and messes up a Rahman thread. But I dont think they'd actually go and spoil another thread w/ ugly messages intentionally.
I've seen Aswathama actually post in praise of Rahman. Dont know what got into him lately...
And Nattamai, inspite of his Thundu fixation, he's always maintained a dignified decency when he responds to msgs.
If u really wanna "help clean newtfmpage", try checking out these imposters who post under the name of regular DFers.
Here are a few of them... (the imposters.. not the originals!!)

I guess Dinesh suffered the most. "Wondering" and someone else posted in his name and created total havoc. It was VERY ugly.
But then, look what i found!
