It is a real tragedy. I cannot believe the man who gave us super hits like "Nayagan", "agni natchatram" , "thalapathi" is dead. This is a indicator of the health of tamil film industry.

He has given support to some of the best tamil files like Nayagan, Mowna Ragam, Thalapathi..
He is elder brother of Mani.. He took whole bunch of VIjayakanth floppers too i think..
I guess he was just 'used' by these top actors and left to die in poverty. what a shame..shame on Mani too being his brother.

very disheartening to know a highly qualified man making such decisions. everything is uncertain these days. it is not just lack of good actors but quality of overall filmmaking talent has gone down in the last 10 years.
producers should not take risks like this since there is no innovation at all these days to draw auidences to theatres, plus there is no sytem to clamp down piracy like in the US.
Somebody is payint the price for the unorgazined movie and now a very clannish industry. I had met GV on couple of occasions. My prayers.

KUM, why would GV not, when suddenly the realization struck that Tamil Film industry was IR and Sivaji and not even Kamal and Rajini. I think GV as doing very well as long as IR was making film music! Time change and sudden twist of fate like this takes people to another level...

Shocking, and indicates the plight of the movie industry. There were quite a few technicians at the lower level who had done the same in the past few years because of the prevailing situation in the movie industry. The govt. has to do something about the piracy, which is easier said than done and will probably never happen. Astronomical salaries for actors like Vijay who churns out one crappy movie after another with strict demands to the director. I wonder why producers decide to make movies with him in the first place. S.A. Chandrasekhar, T.Rajendar and their sons are amongst the worst things that have happened to Tamil movie industry in the recent years. Unless a total revamp of the system takes place we can expect to see more such tragedies.

>I think GV as doing very well as long as IR was >making film music
please people donot bring your favoritism into play here
and I cannot believe the Hindu News paper when they publish aishwarya rais accident and salman khans arrest on the front page, GVs death is listed in Southern states section.
You too Hindu?

well said Nazir. This is really ridiculous. I vividly remember Hindu publishing Rai's news with foto on 2 consecutive days in the front page and even emailed to my friends mentioning about Hindu's declining level of journalism. And now I am amazed by this.

Its really a great loss to tamil movie industry.. He acted in a couple of movies in guest roles.. remember him coming in 'Raaja Kaiya vecha' and saying that he is maniratnam's brother.. its true that heros are the reasons for decline of some producers.. whatever might be the reason, this is not healthy for Tamil film industry...
digression...
As usual contradicting news in 3 diff sites.. thinamani says he is 60 years old, rediff says 56 and hindu says 55..

Really a shocking news to the public who enjoyed the great films he produced and an even worse shock to the film industry.May the great soul rest in peace.
This is a high time the industry realises something and cuts down on the cost of production of movies and enhances the quality of story like malayalam movies where the industry is not hero dependent rather a story and director dependent.
Heroes are not the only ones to be blamed.Few MD's also get paid in crores and deliver bad music as a result of which the music industry gets hit badly adding to the piracy problems.
Flying down non tamil singers(udit narayan,Sukhwinder singh, sadhana sargam) from bombay and paying them ten times the remuneration and paying their 5 star hotel bills incl liquor(Black labels, chivas regals)has worsened the situation and weakened the tamil language as well as the tamil industry.
Import of bombay based heroines on whom lakhs and lakhs are spent on hotel bills and their families who fly down along with them.
Arise Awake Tamil industry.Cut down production costs, choose best stories and use local talents and the industry and further deaths like this can be prevented

GV, producer & distibutor, burnt his finger when he arranged for the Micheal jackson concert in mumbai & chennai (chennai's show was cancelled which made him sue jackson's show promoters & lost)..he was also involved besides filmaking organising charity concert shows with IR & gangai amaran...The high remuneration of vijay for his "comeback" Tamilan burnt a big hole for him & the film was a disaster...His recent k bakyaraj - vijayakant combo sokka thangam only got lukewarm response from the sectors which drove the man up the wall..before taking a back seat from film producing, GV inaugurated several high profile functions...1 of them was for rajni's nattukku oru nallavan film function when he gave a fired speech praising rajni..after which he went on to produce the mega hit thalapathi....my condolences to his family....RIP G.V..

Kiran,
I dont think GV had any problems with IR...as mentioned earlier, he in fact praised him during his very recent PODHIGAI TV interview..the tussle, i guess, was between MR & IR only..not GV

GV, a pioneer of sorts, tried to corporatise film industry. But his efforts were not whole hearted and the crucial "Financing" part continued be old-fashioned.He is rumoured to have played up GV films shares thru some insider trading and announced dividends without sufficient profits.
Having worked with some financiers I know the prevalent rate for Film Financiers was around 48%( 4 Vatti). The distributors ,the worst sufferes pay normally 60% p.a ( 5 vatti).Added to this the Banks kept away from financing(correctly) due to the lack of coroporate structure.Indian Bank Gopalkrishnan was involved in many film financing. He was a sort of "Protector" for TF using his personal and Banks finance for Film industry. With his fall( and Indian Banks too!),a collapse ,became inevitable.
When someone offers a person like "Chimbu" 2 crores,I think ,suicide is a better option.I am not a pessimist generally, but GV has only started the trend. We are in for many more.(unfortunately the Distributors deaths never get the coverage)
I would pay 1 million INR to buy even a Anuradha Ramanan /Devi Bala /Rajesh kumar Story than pay to the likes of Srikanth,Chimbu,.
An uncertanity with big budgets has another dark side, the mushrooming of films like "thulluvatho Ilmai" which makes the distributor happy and keeps in on a "Moral high " becuase he does a "Shakeela Film" without getting branded!
My condolences to his family.

shocking and sad news. this news doesnt speak well for the tamil film industry. it only shows that beyond the glib talk and cosmetic shows there lies a real pathetic situation in the background. dont know how many other producers are going through the same trouble. couldnt find any news or reaction from the TN Film producers association.
GV has seen ups and down in this industry which is a part of the industry itself. he took risks and had the thing in him to try with comebacks which shows his passion for film making. the first person in India to go public corporatising film production. when he was doing well he paid crores of rupees as tax to the govt. and when he was going through a lean phase he was not getting enough support and finally ended his life too. may his family and dear friends have the strength to overcome this grief and let also the industry folks resolve that its time to have a review of the present situation.
