Nice to read the long posts!
I have to agree with Anand's view that not all musical forms are instantly appreciated - but given a good deal of hearing and studying, you can learn to enjoy it more and it will grow on you over time. For example, ask anyone who hasn't listened to any Jazz to listen first time...in most cases I am sure you will see an expression of shock in the listener. He/she would not even categorize it as music. It is like taking a sip of coffee first time in your life...you think "who can even drink this!!"
Point is, if you learn some theory behind a certain form of music, learn its history and most importantly listen to it as many times as possible, you will see something new which you didnt see first time, and as a result you will enjoy it even more.

I too agree, that some musical forms requires more hearing and studying. I never claimed nor will I ever claim film music to be a higher musical form compared to other forms.

Thanks so much for the words and that would be my point about film music too.
To appreciate film music, one has to *see* visual and *hear* the music to learn the relationship between the image and music. If you are seeing it only as a musical form you're missing the whole point.
If you're interested in such a music/image relationship, the dry book "Image, Music, Text" by Roland Barthes throws some good light on it.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0374521360/qid=1078683791/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-2470237-8016913?v=glance&s=books
This book is not a theory, it's a criitcal analysis on image music and text.
The reason I am interested in these theories and analysis is because -- One, I am a filmmaker, I ought to know this. Two, I am intereted in making music videos (degrading terminology) Let me put it this way--I am interested in interpreting music in visual form.

Senthil,
thanks for sharing your background ...congratulations on your training! altho I never intended to atack your artistic intellect in the first place. I must just clarify when I said 'you' in my statements its not you in particular!!
I am not for or against any form of music, I enjoy all of them. But each has its place. Since film music cannot be focussed on the grammar of music, it loses its formal rigor but with the benefit of describing and aiding images. it is just different.
Swamiji has nicely summarized my point...thanks.
have to go ...
later

I jumped into this thread to support some of the talented composer presenting their work in this thread. Some ppl criticize works without a point and I would hate to see anyone discouraged by it. Also, as I said earlier, I love exploring the relationship between music and image.
OK. I wrote an article long time back about Indian film music to rebuff the western critics, who think all Indian film music is just about dances and moves. I think it is relevant to views I expressed here. Please check it out. It's about the song "Enulle..Enulle" from Valli.
Pardon me, for the very a long article and I working on it to shorten it. (Read,I am a very bad writer!) It's an acid test for me!
Generally, I don't mind expressing my views and I don't mind being corrected. So all comments are very very very welcome. Write to me at senthil-at-senthilv.com. Please replace the -at- with @. Thanks.

Sentil,
I just listened to this song. It is a great !! it is vintage Illayaraja, with awesome string parts (very Baroque sounding, with a carnatic/tamil folk music touch!!) and GREAT counterpoint, besides the relevance to the story as you describe.
I havent been keeping track of much of tamil film music these days, but this is an eye opener.
you have the impression that I attack others work without any reason, but its not true, seriously.
got to go again, will listen more to this piece and your analysis later.
cheers

You sound pretty knowledgeable to criticize but honestly, I just did not get the point of it.
I have respect for the composers/musician in this page because I learned a lot of theory from following their discussion. Even though the film composing analysis is from visual angle, only, I know how weird I felt when I posted in this thread.
I might have skipped some musical terms out my ignorance and some, just to make the article read for everyone.
Please do let me know your feedback.

Senthil..what a fantastic analysis. Another poster here by name rjay used to do very technical/minute analysis of IR's songs. You are the one who has given an analysis linking the song with the visuals. Obviously, IR literally translates a situation into musical form. You must make a very good director. If you send this analysis to IR, I am pretty sure, he would give his characteristic smile, but he will be 'your' music director from then on.
BTW, why is it 'sad' that you are a software architect ?. Architecture is all about patterns just like music. It is just applied differently. I consider software as a 'crossover' field (art-science).

Eshwar,
I listened to ur Natpu.
Lyrics - simple and good.
Beats - suit the music.
Interludes - Y not some strings? or a flute with good indian-percussion instruments.
i wish u try something on those lines with the same tune and lyric.

Kiru:
Thanks for the generous words. IR is every director's dream. I still have a long way to go before I start thinking about working with him.
I agree with you comments on architecture.
Yes, software is not a bad field. In fact, there is lot in common between Hollywood filmmaking and software development. Software development has borrowed a lot from filmmaking and "Studio" hollywood in 30's 40's was heavily influnced by Ford's assembly line model, to produce films. I even have an unfinished article based this notion... will try to rework and post it when I get a chance.

What is the best 'beginner' software which allows you to create midi composition along with digital video/film...etc...?
Thanks!

Hi all,
I wrote a folk song that I would like to put out there for those interested in composing for it. If you have doubts about the spelling or pronunciation, please ask. You are welcome to alter the structure by changing the order or dropping lines, etc. If you add any lyrics to it, just don't make it in another language, that's all I ask. I hope we can have some fun with this. For the uninitiated, letters in caps are for emphasis in pronunciation--periya Na, periya La, etc. Wherever I've used two vowels together it denotes the sound being stretched, similarly if there's only one vowel, don't stretch it--baluvellaam means weight which shouldn't be sung as baalu which is a name.

Hi Friends,
Is there any free download of a wave editor like the 'Cool edit' in the net ? Cool Edit is not available any more and the version of 'Gold Wave' that is available only allows recording for two minutes. If there is any other software available (or the older 'Cool Edit' itself), please let me know. Thank You.
