Ghantasala and BMK sound similar to SPB? That's funny. I wouldn't buy that comparison one bit. Also, Hariharan having a nasal voice is, to me, unacceptable. He has probably the most un-nasal (I just made that up) voice today.

Kaumudi,
I find Similarities with SPB & Ghantasala's voice, after all Ghantasala was the telugu king, b4 the arrival of SPB
Regarding Hariharan, he is nasal, and most of the new singers have nothing Unique in their, voice or modulation, Is there ever going to be another SPB??, NO
what do u think?

Well... if u're including Rafi,I guess Talat Mehmood and Manna De should find a place in the list too.
For me it's SPB and PBS; Rafi, Talat and De all the way :-)
R u restricting the rating to male singers alone?

DR.SPB is not as versatile as DR.KJY.
.
meaning,
KJY's versatality includes the upper end. Classical/devotional/romantic/melodious.
.
SPB's versatality includes the lower end.
Romantic/melodious/fast/dabbankuthu.
.
If you value the formar kind of versatality, DR.KJY would top the list.
.
..and in the VOICE DEPARTMENT, KJY scores 101 % (the divine beauty of it!!), and is incomparable (take his songs upto 1992...)

This "Music Lover" has a fixation on SPB. should everything/everybody in the world be judged in comparison with SPB..?
.
Ghantasala and BMK are singers who are up there in the stratosphere which is inhabited by the immortals KJY, Rafi, and the like.. Even SPB would feel it sacrilege to be compared to these greats..
.
To me, RAFI, KJY, TMS, LATA Mangeshkar, and Ghantasala belong to a group which is beyond this kind of wide-eyed adolescent comparison. Incidentally, these legends were trained in classical traditions, where as SPB is merely a superb singer of film songs (not withstanding his "Sankarabharanam" and some Devotional efforts..)
.
Agreed, he is a superb singer of film songs...

OK.
.
as i cannot have anybody else' opinion, and karan only karan's, there is no point in quarrelling :).
.
now, in the last 40/45 years,
.
* the greatest singer in Telugu language (i mean popular music with good quality) is Ghantasala.
* the greatest singer in Tamil is TMS.
* the greatest singer in Malayalam is Yesudas.
* the greatest singer in Kannada (i am not sure, forgicve me).
* the greatest singer in Hindi is Rafi (=LMangeshkar).
.
i don't know where the great(no doubt about his greatness) SPB stands among the above. i only meant Rafi/KJY/Ghantasala/TMS/Lata are in a different class altogether. what is special about KJY is that among the five he alone has successfully trancended the language barrier in these five languages, and the PureCalssical/Light music divide.
.
i recently read a tamil book on KJY by the name "Ezhisainayakan". Author, gandeepan (i think so..).

vetrivel, i saw your postings. i can only say that in spb, we find ghantasala,tms,kjy,md.rafi,kishore. He represents all . He is so versatile that it is not possible for any one to come near spb. He is SIVAJI GANESH OF INDIAN FILM MUSIC

DEAR FAN,
.
It is difficult to argue with such dogmatic, blind adoration.
.
any way, i have yet to find a Telugu who is ready to sobordinate the greatness of Ghantasala to that of SPB. this is just one example, leaving aside KJY, Rafi..etc..
.
probably, the versatality of SPB is similar to that of Kishore. But it is not the same as that of Rafi or KJY, whose renderings touch deeper depths of your soul.
.
Probably SPB and Kishore are more popular among a large section of people.
.
cheerio!

he is the best singer in india.
his record no. of songs just goes to prove his versatility in which he is streets ahead of the rest of the singers.

4) M.Rafi - Neither too heavy or too thin, good voice
<<
.
the above fantastic comparison (hyperbole/condescension) reveals a lot about MusicLover's objectivity.
.
what is evident is that the person is surely a lover of SPB. Is it not possible for fans to be objective?
.
I feel such lopsided comparisons have the opposite effect of what is desired. it is easy to see through the whole device of artificial cnostruct, from the language.
.
poor, great SPB.
