GV,
R U a mallu?? If so U must be knowing different types of "sa" (sa-as in sagar sa as in shankar and sa as in salyam (a mallu word meaning -thollai in tamil) ).SPB doesn't pronounce the last sa properly as it's used only in mallu.
Similarly, the "na" sound (na as in nandu, nathai etc are pronounced differently/correctly in mallu where as we pronounce it like na in "kanru"-calf.
These subtleties are not taken care of by most of the non-mallu singers, the reason may be bcos those sounds may not be available in their native language.
But the case of Udit narayan is different."du" sound is very much available in hindi but look at the way he pronounces "adhu" in soniya soniya. He sings ".... adha asaivam".
But, the fact remains that both of them were not sincere enough to make pronunciation sound native

shankar:
I agree with you about the subtelities of Malayalam pronunciation that makes it difficult for non-mallus to sing mallu songs. A.M. Raja, PS and SJ were the exceptions. One of the difficulties that mallu singers have in singing Tamil songs is that Tamil and Malayalam have a large number of common words which are often pronounced differently in each language. Unless a person has full command of both languages, it is difficult to pronounce all these words perfectly, especially with the regional variations in each language.
The point I was making earlier was that mallus probably feel the same way about SPB (and Lata Mangheshkar) singing Malayalam songs as you and me do when Udit and Sonu sing Tamil songs.

SPB is a great singer and holds a highly prestegeous and accomplished position in the musical world of our country. The person also appear to be very simple and polite in his interviews and stage appearances, in spite of his great achievements in life as a singer.
I understand basically he is an engineer and had no formal training in Music. My surprise about this had no limits when"Shankarabharanam" was released.Anyway,if it is true that he had no formal training in classical music ,here is a great example which proves that born inherent talents can overshoot and override the formal qualifications/training in this particular discipline.
Few years ago, I remember SPB had some stage shows in Gulf with K.S Chithra and Surender( who was normally the dubbing artiste for actor Mohan). This was a great programme applauded and appreciated by not only South Indians, but by audience belonging to other diffrent parts of India as well as persons belonging to oher nationalities.
Jayachandran, I understand, is another singer who had no formal training of classical music
when he entered films. But it seems he underwent subsequent classical music training after he entered films. He also has ,to his credit, done great contributions to TFM.But, unfortulately,TFM very rarely discusses about him in these forums.
I think the singing styles of singers like PBS, AMR,KJY and SPB brought TFM out of a Paradigm
wherein high pitch specific style singers like TMS and Sheerkazhi dominated the scene.

SPB is a great singer. Is it true that his songs in Shankarabharanam received a few bashings from stalwarts in music in those days who said that those songs were not sung in the way they should be sung? If so for a person without any formal training in singing till that stage in his life, it is a fabulous performance in his career. Can someone give a feedback about the reviews that he received on doing Sankarabharnam.

If KVM had okayed the songs then I think, none excpet IR or MSV could have questioned them , that too if it was an extreme and untolerable mistake from KVM. logically I think that would answer your question.

M.S. Subbulachumy appreciated SPB for having sung well in Sangarabharanam. I believe she even invited him for a dinner in her house.Though Dr.Balamuraly Krishna had sung under the direction of KVM in Thiruvi8layadal(oru Naal Pothuma) and Subhadhinam (Putham Puthu Meni)he refused to sing in Sangarabharanam. It was complained that S.P.Bala had "mimicked" Balamuraly in Sankarabharanbam.
KVM is the Thirai Isai Thilagam and he must have reason to chose S.P.Bala when Balamuraly declined. And KVM's decision was a wise one.

he is really a complete singer..I couldnt beleive that he sang the song "geetham sangeetham" from kokarakoo as the voice is very young....
he tries to change his vocie for most of the actors and he succeeded cery well..
Recently in the song "parthu parthu kangal puthirunthaen" from nee varuvayena he changed his style of singing to suit parthiban...i felt like it was Parthiban who sang that song becoz Parthiban's dialogue delivery is very popular in TFI with a lot of modulations..
he himself turns as the character who sings the song..we can feel in that in all of his songs..
Each singer has some strength like KJY,Unnikrishnan are very much suited for melody and Jayachandran,Unnimenon for slow melodies and pothos and mano, rehman, deva, udit narayan etc are suited for jolly, fast songs..
but SPB has done all type of songs for every actor. He tries to improvise every song and the credit goes to the music director and IMHO he never spoiled any song by his improvisation.
His dubbing voice for kitti in the film sathya was
very much impressing(very soft voice)...
he is really great and my fav singer in india

Three decades, thirty thousand songs, different languages, different heros, different MDs, one cannot deny SPB his pedestal.
There was something else, a professional sense, a public relations sense, a catch- the crop type of thing which built his stardom when compared to other great singers of the film industry who were not prepared to compromise.

SPB has a fantastic abitily to mosulate his voice in which ever way he pleases. He has the God-gifted ability to adapt to the tone of the scene. No wonder he is a fav singer to many, in most regions of India, who speak different languages.
