Malayalam film industry has a good track record of using published novels/Stories.( I don tknow about the songs there)
Tamil film industry has not used pre-written stories/novels much.Thought of discussing the songs in such movies, how well were they fitted in and how the music/songs elevated/brought down the story value.
Thyagaboomi - Kalki- Subramnaiam
Miss Malini -Kothamangalam subbu-Vasan(?)
Gomathiyin Kadalan- Thevan (a TRR starrer)
Thillana Moganambal-Kothamangalam Subbu-APN
Iruvar Ullam -Lakshmi (Penn Manam)-LV Prasad
Sila Nerangalil - JK-Bhimsingh
Oru Nadigai Nadagam paarkiral-JK
Agni Pravesam - JK (Was it released?)
Sirai-Anuradha Ramanan-RC Sakthi
Priya -Sujatha-SP Muthuraman ( sorry to include!)
Gayathri- Sujatha-SP Muthuraman
Ethu Eppadi irukku -Sujatha(Anitha elam manaivi)-SPM
Thikkatra parvathi -Rajaji-Singetham SrinivasaRao
Parthiban Kanavu-Kalki-??(is it ok to include?)
Mogamul-Thi.Ja- Gnanasekaran
Shall we include
Padavikkaga -(Mudalvan)-Sujatha-Shankar
Kallukkul Eeram (Hey Ram)-Ra.Su.Nall perumal-Kamal
In my view Sila nerangalil should rank first as a goos story, good songs in a well made movie, followed by Iruvar Ullam (a run-of-the mill story) brilliantly scripted and directed by LV Prasad.

OISG, pineetenga!!
BTW..How much are the writers satisfied with the work of the directors? In an essay, RK Narayan came down heavily on Dev Anand for massacring(??) The Guide, the Sahitya Acad award winner in 61.
Chemeen(TS Pillai) was a big hit though in '92.

Azhagi is probably the latest film in this category (by a story written earlier by Thangar BachAn called 'kal vettu').
IR's music was of course one of the strong points in the film (I heard he even suggested a couple of songs after watching the film and the director was very pleasd with the way they elevated the situations)
Yes, we also have the forgettable 'ALavandhAn' (based on Kamal's earlier novel 'DhAyam')

There was one short story in Kalki's nooRRandu vizha malar(is that nooRaaNdu or 50'yrs?) written by Sujatha which had the story-line of "AlaipaayudhE"

Oru Malarin Payanam - Anuradha Ramanan. Muktha Films (Dir: Srinivasan?) Good songs by Chandrabose.
Oru Singam Mulayagiradhu ( Avan Aval Adhu) Sivasankari - Muktha Srinivasan. Good songs, appropriately done in keeping with the plot.
Sivappukal Mookkuththi - Maharishi. Songs not terribly memorable.
Saindhadamma Saindhadu - Maharishi. Good songs, terrible film.
47 Naatkal - Sivasankari - KB. Good songs, movie was a bit of a letdown in page to screen adaptation.
Moham Muppadhu Varusham - Manian. Good songs, situationally apt, film was more miss than hit.
Jananam (or ni?) by Vaasanthi - film version: Yaaro Yezhudhiya Kavidhai. Dir: Sridhar. Songs were above average, but the film was another big letdown from the master of "romance" !

Next in the rank should be "Mullum Malarum" by Umachandran-Mahendran.Here again it is not a great story but excellantly adpated by Mahendran on screen.
I still wonder how that managed the I prize with "Kallukkulk eeram" bagging the II prize in the Kalki competition.
Adding to the list
"oothapu Kan Simitugirathu"-Pushpa Thagadurai-??
Naaz
Sivasankari s ordinary (yet sensationalised!) 47 Naatkal was equally presented poorly on screen by KB.But JP did give a wonderful performance.
In Avan Aval Adhu -how come that woman manage to pick sensitive issues yet come out with poor stories is a puzzle to me.This movie too had good songs and good performaance by Lakshmi.
In how many movies has the MD really understood the story value?

there is a movie called 'vattaththukkuL sadhuram' (one of IR's early movies), Maharishi has written a novel with the same title - not sure if they are same, ... can anybody confirm ?

I think during 1978-83 SP Muthuraman had shown lot of interest in this field.Maharishi and Sujatha must have been his favourites.(Maharishi ..of all the people!)
But he too like Gnanasekaran (Mogamul) categorically failed in the adpatation excercise.Mogamul was immaturity written allo ver it.The music was ok but still not great.Abishek as Babu..grrr..grr... Can you think of Vadivelu as James Bond?

Friends,
Long back, I have read somewhere that the story of a Ravichandran-Ramanna film named 'AndRu kaNda mugam' was Kalki's, though nobody bothered to acknowledge this in the titles! Even Sujatha, in spite of his close association with TF industry, had to face this when they didn't acknowledge him for loosely basing Sathyaraj's 'Airport' on his old novel 'JK'!
There was one novel by Poovai ARumugam ' SondhangaL vaazhga', filmed with the same name with Jayachitra, Cho, Manorama and others(1978-80)
Another rare case!: One radio drama by PoovaNNan was filmed as 'namma kuzhandaigaL'
Rajendrakumar's 'VaNakkaththukkuriya kaathaliye' was originally his novel by the same name.
Komal Swaminathan has described in detail in his autobiography 'PaRanthu pOna pakkangal' about how he contacted Maharishi who was employed in TNEB, to get his permission for filming one story of his by KS Gopalakrishnan: 'ennathaan mudivu?' (AVM Rajan-1965). Much later, Maharishi's 'Bhuvana oru kELvikkuRi' was also filmed.
At least one film of Cho 'Aayiram poi' was based on his story in Kalki 'kaadhal illaiyEl saadhal'
Kothamangalam Subbu's Rao Bahadur Singaram was filmed as Gemini's 'ViLaiyaattup piLLai'.
I read somewhere that Gemini Vasan paid the royalty to Kothamangalam Subbu for the story of 'Thillaanaa MohanaambaaL' but generously allowed APN to produce it in his banner of Vijayalakshmi films!

1.Akilan's Pavai Vilkakku
2. Akilan's Kayalvizhi taken as MAdurayai Meetta Sundra Pandiyam (dialogues all became ADMK propaganda)
3. Akilan's Vaazhvu Engey taken as Kualamagal Rathai (akilan told me thes story was mutilated)
4.MuVaa's Petra Manam(Mu Va never allowed anymore of his novels to be adapted into film form after this)
5. Kaleer Kaleer taken as Aada Vantha Deivam.
6. Kalki's Kalvanin Kaathali
7. Thi Janakiraman's Naalu Veli Nilam
8.Maniyan's Ithayam Pesugirathu taken as Idhaya Veenai
9.JK's Yarukkaka Azhuthaan

OISG,
are you serious about mogamul. i thought it was a decent effort. May be you saw the movie after seeing all the Tv serials of Abishek .hence the grrr. he was ok. ranganna was played with panache by N. venu. songs wer ok . The best thing though is many of Thi Ja's original dialogues appear in the movie. this was pleasant surprise.vattathukkul sathuram is by maharishi only.(itho itho en nenjile orey padal... was popular)
my additions.
1.Inru nee naalai naan( from a maalaimathi novella by C A Balan) . It had very good music by IR
2.Kannamoochi (Sivakumar-Latha based on a story by Rajendra kumar (gney fame!)
3.Raja raja cholan (on the novel of the same name by Aru ramanathan) kunnakudi should take a major potion of the blame for the debacle . as also the producer's tight purse strings. probably they got away with using only six horses( for chola, vengi & other kingdoms)
4. kuttu puzhukkal ( anuradha Ramanan) music ??
5.The mother of all tamil movies-Uthiri pookal( based on a short story by Puthumai pithan chitti acknowledged in the titles as well) excellent music by IR
6. there was a story by sujatha about Kidney transplant which was also made into a movie. i am in very bad form- so I am only guessing that the story is Kakitha Changili. Sulakshana & others starred in the movie.
More later

vengaayam,
I think 6. is kaakitha sangilikaL ...
in 5. the short story name is 'ChitRannai' (Infact its a kurunovel ..)
I too feel moghamull was a decent effort, making a 3 hour movie from such a classic is not going to be easy for any one (remember kamal hasan failing with ponniyin selvan ?)
As with the music, songs were great and fit the movie really well !

Moghamull - the heroine was the best pick of all... i wish i could see more of her..... and songs were really great - "Kamalaaam paadha kamaalaam, Sollayo Vai thirandhu, Nenjae Gurunadharin".....
anyone seen the movie "Aangaal Jakiradhaai".... this was from the story by Stella Bruce - i don't remember the story name - it came in Anandha Vikatan..... when it came in AV, there will be a huge fight in my home for AV - to read that story..... man, but when i watched the movie - what a sodhapaaal....
funny info about "Priya" - they had removed the "Vasanth" character in the movie.... so in next Sujatha's novel, "vasanth" says "Boss, endha padaathaa eduthavanaaa......" :-)

OISG- Miss Malini was based on RK Narayan's Mr.Sampath. Kothamangalam Subbu acted in it. Cho filmed the same story again as 'Mr.Sampath'.
Vengayam-
That Sulakshana starrer was 'Poi Mugangal'- hero was Ravichandran of Paruva Ragam' fame. Good music by S-G. KJY's 'Ingu naam kaanum paasam' stands out.
Kootu puzhukkal was a good effort by RC Shakthi.
MSV's music had its moments- 'Nitham nitham'-MSV & SPB was excellent. 'Inaikku vandha'-KSC and 'Indha malligaippoovukku'-PS were pedestrian.
Sabesan- that story in AV by Stella Bruce was 'Oru Murai thaan pookum' filmed as 'Aangalai Nambaathey'. Pandian, Rekha. Music by Devendran. 'Kaadhal kaayangaley'-KJY-MVD was a good song. TMS sang 'Vaarai en thozha vaarayo'!
Naaz-Sivappukkal Mookukthi was Kannadasan's story, I think. Music-MSV.
