Odiya enbathin definition enna? If you mean a movie that ran for atleast 100 days, kaadhal Oviyam fails to qualify.

Another one for the hit list - thenRalE ennai thodu. It was a decent comedy.. but didn't deserve the run it had.. one day short of a year!!

Chandrasekaran - since it is difficult to gauge the success of a movie, shall we just list movies that had many great songs? Then your list will definitely qualify. My contributions:
8. Alaigal Voivathillei
9. Ithaya Koyil
10. Agni Natchathiram
11. Mouna Geetham
12. Vahidehi Kaathirunthaal

What about 'kaadhalan'? I cannot imagine how the guy who made a wonderful time-pass movie (Gentleman) can come up with such a sub-standard one? thaaaaanga mudiyaatha aRuvai. But for the songs (and dances, off course), the movie deserves the dust-bin.

NOV:
If we start listing movies with great songs then there is no room for discussion. It will be only an exercise of listing mostly IR songs. I agree with Ravi on this. We can have a general concensus about the hit status of a movie; in TN a hit movie is generally defined as the one that ran for atleast 50 days in both A and B centers. (A: city theatres B: mofussil theatres). With this definition, Ninaivellam Nitya & Idhya koil (apart from Kadhal oviyum) leave the list.
Alaigal ooivadhillai, vaidehi kaathirunthall, mouna raagam (I think this is what you meant not mouna geethangal) leave the list because they are hits. Agni Natchathiram might make it to the list.
Here is some more:
chittukkuruvi & Lakshmi

1)Idhayaththai ThirudaadhE
2)Nattupura pattu
3)Aranmanai kiLi

Ninaivellam Nithya
Kaadhal Oviyam
Paattukkagavum odaatha padangal.
Both were mega-flops. Other movies in this list Aanandhak kummi, Geethanjali (IR produced them)

Was "Anandha Kummi" a hit movie? Of course, the songs were good. But I don't think the movie was a hit.
I would add "Chembaruthi" also to the "popular movies because of songs" list. Guys, don't tell me that the movie was a hit because of Roja.

What I meant was AanandhakKummi, Geethanjali are in the NNithya, Kaadhal Oviyam list i.e paatukkagavum odaatha padangal. They were all mega flops. IR has numerous movies like this : songs are great but the movie is a mega-flop.

Konjam confus-aagi vittethu. IMO Paatukkaga Odiya Padangal means if not for the songs, these movies would have failed. If that is so, how can these movies be included:
Sippikkul Muthu, Chinna thambi, Agni Natchathiram (Guys, give me a breaK!) and Idhayaththai ThirudaadhE
You may wish to consider these:
Kizhakey Poagum Rayil, Duet, Neengal Keitevei, Payangangal Mudivathillei, Uthaya Geetham

What's so great about Agni Natchatram ? The movie is an atrocious movie. The only redeeming factors are PCSriram's photography, Sundaram's choreography and Raja's music. No story, no characterisation, no direction.
Idhayathai Thirudathe was another stupid movie. MR had a great idea : In movies like Payanangal Mudivathillai, Vaazhve Maayam etc, only the hero had a fatal disease. Let's do a twist here : both the hero and the heroine have a fatal disease. What an idea ! What about the story ? Oh well, I can always rehash bits and pieces from Agni, Natchatram, Mouna Raagam. Raja will score great music, PC Sriram will do great photography. A couple of flashy dances here and there and I have a blockbuster. What an easy way to make money !

In your consideration list all movies except Neengal Kettavai had some story or some good histronics in them. So they probably may not qualify.

I beg to differ!!! If you remember Agni N's songs were released eons before the movie. Nothing spectacular about the songs either - just usual IR standar (which is good BTW). The movie created an impact not just from the cinematography. The telling of story was superb.
As far as IThirudaathey was concerned, whilst the songs were great, surely they didn't dub the movie to Tamil just because of the songs. IMO nobody can beat MR when it comes to telling a story. A point of interest for you. IThirudaathey was remade locally into a Malay feature film with top actors and actresses - and the songs were not even featured!!!
I's sorry to have digressed.

Can we include "Udayam" in this list of hits. Despite violence, that film had nice songs too (Music : IR). I can remeber the SPB's song "botany class-um uNdu.." There are couple of good duets too. ???

By the way, "udhayam" was dubbed from Telugu. It was a hit in Tamil and Telugu. I am not sure about its Hindi version ("shiva" or something)

enna thalaivaa ippadi solleetteenga? Agni was a lesson on direction. true that there is very little story value. But the screenplay and direction was GREAT. nallaa think paNNi sollunga? Were you talking about Agni or some other movie?
Your opinion on 'i. thirudaathE' is true to the last word. There was nothing except IR and PCSriram. Hopless movie. The movie was a hit just for the songs though I liked the Telugu version a lot more. Mano had tried his best but never managed even 50% of SPB's original Telugu version.

Did you see 'mauna raagam', 'naayakan', 'agni natch' and 'ithaya. thiru' in that order? MR was giving wonderful movies till then for three consecutive years. Itha. thiru was his first sub-standard movie after 'mau. raa'. Many scenes were repetitions of 'mau.raa'. It was irritating to see the same scenes done by somebody else.

Everybody: Please excuse us for this short digression.
Arvind: Let me describe the scenario in Kuala Lumpur during the screening of Idhayathei Thirudaathey.
Not many people were familiar with Maniratnam then. The songs were unheard then. Yet there were big advertisements taken out for the movie in the newspapers. My friends and I were some of those who were curious. We later leaned that it was a dubbed movie with unknown stars. What do you think was in the movie that made us want to see it, not once but thrice? (By Malaysian standards, this is highly unusual) Songs????
P/S: The movie ran for a long time in KL.

That is precisely the reason you liked itha.thiru. You had heard about MR till then. It was something like the concept of naayakan creating flutters in TN. One of his previous movies, pagal nilavu, featured Satyaraj in a similar role. There were a lot of scenes from that movie which were repeated 100% in naayakan and still naayakan became a hit. This was because pagal nilavu was a flop and even now many people in TN do not know it was an MR movie.
Seeing something copied exactly really irritates you.

If you will allow me to have the last word, it's Maniratnam rules OK!!!!
