BABA ..A belated review (?) observations..
Baba was released this Thursday.Since Friday being a holiday there was terrific crowd. After the movie I was not disappointed because all the reviews in mags had ripped down and my expectations were at the lowest point.
Some of the observations:
1.RK has not wasted money on the script as there was none.Sujatha and Balakumaran have got thanks.
2.RK certainly had an idea though it was not executed well. The initial psychological disturbances ,spirituality generally creates has been captured well by RK.It was a surprise considering RK s track record.
3.The Maya song ..LR cimes out as a winner but PD kills both Shakthi and Kichu.
4.Karthik voice suits Rajini on screen.
5.BGM -Sabesh Murali have just played out the song interludes. Now we are going to have this Sax (tenor?) in VK,Ajith,Vijay movies by SAR,Deva etc..
6.Shakthi ..the indoor idea is stupid.RK calls "Kalikambal" (fem) as "Iraiva" (Ma).Tarun Kumar would have done a better job (though he followed PD s Palkaran style in Arunachalam,Annamalai,Padyappa.
7.RK ..who asked him to sport a 5 o'clock?Even Sayaji shinde s beard looked better.RK should have had his trademark moustache.
8.thank god! They did not show Baba s face.Atleast one of the Associate director has seen Benhur.
9.Manisha ..who next ?CK Saraswathi?
10. Asish ..he simply irritates.Raguvaran would have done a polished job.Vijayan was ok.
11.Shankar ...Graphics!Gaana Mayilada..Ramanand Sagar of Ramayan fame (?)technical advisor polirukirathu!
12.Kaundamani ...prob his best performance after "Ennoru Pazham".Just too good.
13.Gopu-Babu.. ok..The loose script has let them
down.
14.RK as usual has tried to carry things on his shoulder.I think he has succeded to a large extent.Overall he has made a sincere attempt and that is good.

An excerpt from a ARRYG msg. I think it is taken from Business Today, but since I dont think we can access it, here's a copy & paste:
"THE STAR'S BUSINESS MODEL
Rajnikanth's Lotus International has a unique business model. Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan: Production nightmaresRajnikanth produces his own films, and on a tight budget. Baba, for instance, couldn't have cost him more than Rs 5 crore. Lotus comes out with a new release every two years and sells the motion pic directly to 260 theatres across the four southern states. Irrespective of the performance of the film, it makes its money-some Rs 60 crore, that could go up to Rs 75 crore in the case of Baba. Music rights, and international rights are just the icing on the cake. And yes, Rajnikanth gets to keep his cake and eat it too. Not too many of his peers follow this model. Kamal Haasan, after some disastrous attempts at film production, sticks to acting and directing. Shah Rukh Khan boasts a production outfit, Dreamz Unlimited, but apart from two flops, the company has nothing to show for its three years of existence. Besides, given the huge market for Bollywood releases, distribution is a logistical nightmare and Khan, even if he so desires can't probably go the Rajnikanth way. However, Khan retains distribution rights for the Mumbai territory-much like Amitabh Bachchan used to do in his heydays.
With 1.5 million registered fans who are only too willing (dogmatic zeal and all) to serve as brand ambassadors, Rajnikanth is one of the most consumer-focussed businesses in the country and out of it. One of his earlier films Muthu was dubbed in Japanese, titled Eiki (The Dancing Maharajah), and earned an estimated Rs 8 crore in Japan. With an eye on that market, one of Baba's female leads is Japanese actress Keiko Yamato.
Only, Rajnikanth isn't in the entertainment industry; he is in the messiah one. Six years back, he swung the course of an election by making a televised appeal to voters to pick the DMK-TMC combine and they did. And Baba is essentially the story of how one man saves the Tamils from corrupt politicians."
"Film Year of Total Overseas
Release Collections Earnings
Baasha 1995 Rs 25 crore (Total) Rs 3 crore (overseas)
Muthu 1995 Rs 40 crore tot Rs 10 crore o/s
Arunachalam 1997 Rs 30 crore tot Rs 5 crore o/s
Padayappa 1999 Rs 38 crore tot Rs 6 crore o/s
Baba 2002 Rs 60 crore tot Rs 10 crore o/s
All figures are industry estimates"

Baba model for brand-building
Tamil society has been dominated by films for quite a few years. One notices the film industry taking several lessons and percepts from the corporate world. I feel it is time for the corporate world to take some precious, wholesome lessons from the film industry. I am convinced that it will be of great benefit to the former.
Look at the way political parties have used the powerful film medium for spreading their ideology and building their image. The DMK, of course, is the pioneer in this: leaders Annadurai and M Karunanidhi made excellent use of the medium to build their cadres and their following that helped them wrest power from the Congress. Their most precious icon was M G Ramachandran till he broke away and formed his own party. The images assiduously cultivated by MGR and later by Rajnikanth have few parallels.
Even more interesting is the publicity for new films built to a crescendo by a Kamal Hassan or a Rajnikanth. Remember the hype built by Kamal Hassan for his film Hey Ram? Rajnikanth has one of the shrewdest business magnates in his wife Latha.
For over three months, the image building for his new film Baba has been built so effectively and so extensively by her. Ananda Vikatan and Kumudam, widely-read household Tamil magazines, Daily Thanthi and Dinamalar, the large circulated Tamil dailies and even The Hindu carried news on Baba, frequently and liberally through these 15 weeks and more. Recent Rajni films had been great hits and the fact of the new one Baba being released after three years was effectively used to raise curiosity and expectation.
But this is only one part of the business promotion. Look how effectively it has been marketed! PepsiCo is estimated to have caughed up around Rs.3 crore followed by Henkel Spic and TVS Motor Company for co-promotion exercises. This means that much of the cost incurred on making the film and on its promotion would have been met through such endorsements. Rough estimates point to an expenditure of around Rs.5 crore on making and releasing the film; against this revenues are estimated at around Rs.50 crore. Sanjay Leela Bansali, director of Devdas must be looking with envy at Baba facilely firming up the advances well before the release of a film that cost less than a tenth of the budget of Devdas! And estimates are wildly increasing with one putting revenue at Rs.150 crore!
There are vital lessons for the corporate world. Can Ashok Leyland, for example, with a turnover of around Rs.2630 crore and which generated a net profit of Rs.93 crore last year, adopt the Baba model for building sustained, consistent and extensive image building? How many have heard of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd(CPCL), a Rs.6300 crore company? Such an image building has vital fallouts in terms of corporate stature and shareholder perceptions. These are bound to have tangible benefits in terms of market capitalisation. Sections of corporates have just come to appreciate the value of celebrity endorsements.
Like MGR and Rajnikanth, they can support social causes through sustained promotions. INDUSTRIAL ECONOMIST suggested in the Seventies corporates adopting slums, committing just the profit on one day's additional production involving the employees and getting them donate their labour for one extra day. Corporates can analyse and adapt some of the successful practices of the film world to great benefit. The Rajni model appears exemplary.

thnx!
i watched BABA for the 4th time today......and for a change i decided to concentrate on others as well :) ..... not that i din earlier .... but i had only a 60% concentration on RK .... 30% on ARRs BGM ... and 10% for others! (9% of which was towards koundamani....just cudnt help it!) :)
so....this time i made other kutti kutti obseravtions!
1)a small lapse in direction......in opening song RK comes without beard (an unshaven kind of thing).....then when he sez his first dialogue "aambala pullainga veetla ukkarntha kettu poiduvaanga...pombala pullainga oora suthina kaettu poiduvaanga" he has beard.....next scene itself when he drinks with his friends he gets back to the original appearance (like the one in dipu dipu)....mayb some editing lapse....but first time i saw this! :)
2)lip sync isnt proper in many places.....includin RK.....the lip movement isnt clear in certain places......manisha koirala SUTHTHAM! never syncs! ..... and amrish puri he sez dialogues in hindi (during pooja..."is mudra dekho") but padathula its in tamil! :) ..... antha CMs lip movement kooda very bad
3)editing lapse(MAYB) ..... when RK gets some belief in god he thinks back abt that sequence he saw on TV .... dat sivaji MGR one......in that place RK sez "puratchi thalaivaraye yemaatharikkaanga" but his lips move for "enna colur-u enna tejas" .... a dif dialogue said
4)ARR has used that kite music in the last scene....though it was gr8 i feel mayb he shud have reserved it for one particular kind of scene
5)in the scene when the eashwaris(!) exercise theres a music being played rite.....that music doesnt match with the excercise movements! ..... now i know this view of mine is kinda crappy! .... but i feel it wudnt have been SMARTER to use a corresponding bit for music! .... neways not many ppl wud have given so much importance....so doesnt matter....just a SMAAAALLL lapse
6)this one is not a lapse.....actually i never thot of it.....twas my cousin who told! .... the ironbox fite is kinda similar to the one in Shanghai Noon....where Jackie Chan fites using a horseshoe(??)
OISG,
yes....PDs steps are hifunda for RK.....LR gave him simple but goos steps.....the maya maya songs in theatre is amazing.....innai varaikkum whistle adippatahi control panni vaechurukkaen! (actually i cant whistle loud!) :))
are u sure SM scored BGM?? .... their name i never saw anywhere in the credits??......besides as i told earlier in Vijay TV in some thiraivimarsanam they said "ARR RK-ku BGM-la oru kuraiyum vekkala......nalllavey poaturukkaru"....and i don think SM music quality ivalo irukkum! :)
in that Shakthi song....the Iraiva is MAYB coz they already say "thaayum neeyae thanthayum neeyae" (!!) .... dats some stupis excuse from me! .... dunno wat was in VMs mind :)
hehe....manisha koirala nethiyila graph podalaam! :) .... since RK is also old mayb he felt heroine-um vayasaanavala theriyanum! :))
overall i feel watv RK wanted to convey has been conveyed properly.....i don think ther cud have been a better way of bringing out wat he had in mind.....the reason its not doing well is dat the whole concept is not liked by his fans......they just want a padayappa RK!.....actually considering that Arunachalam ran 200 days i feel this shud film do more.....but very tuf....coz of the large number of theatres in which it is running

Due to different type of story and media negative feedback, most of them bashed this movie. Now i can see some positive feedback from this thread. People started to realize Baba's impact. Definately it will be super hit. That is for sure.
