Illayaraja, The Suberb Lyric Writter

Recently, I saw the video cassette of Kallaingar M.Karunanidhi's Pavalla Vizha. Illayaraja has written a wonderfull song about kallaingar M.K. as it goes like ...Thaane, Thannai Thaane, Thannai Thaane Tamizhukku Thanthane... He is an exceptional lyric writter as u can see in Manniye mannikuille Mallayillam Kathirazhage...

I am starting this thread to be able to discuss and share his wonderful lyrics also.

  The song for Kalaingar's pavaLa vizha was ok but the tune was not that catchy.
  
  IR wrote all the lyrics for BRs "Naadodi Thendral". They were all good.

  As you can see, the lyrics are very simple and easy to understand. In simple terms, "paamaranukkum puriyum". Before the release of "Naadodi Thendral", IR had mesmerized us all with his great music. After that, he showed us that he is capable of writing good lyrics too. He is also good in singing "certain" songs. He plays lot of instruments. What more? He is THE complete musician in the world, according to me.
  
  After "Naadodi Thendral", however, IR has not been writing lot of lyrics. I wish he gives another album like "Naadodi Thendral".

  I have 3 cass marketed as songs sung and written by IR.To me 'naan eri karai mel irundu, ettu disai paarthirundu, engi engi kaathirunden kaanalle- mani eru ettu aana pinnum, oorandangi pona pinnum, soru thanni venammennu thonnalle- nan sollada aasaikale sollame pootivetchu ullure vaadarene ikkarayike' is just classic lyrics. there are more but this is the one for me.
  I think 'solam vedakkayile' from 16 vayadinile was his first but not sure. I'll check it. I've got a book full of lyrics by IR's father who was a famous drama singer/songwriter!!

  IR also wrote "Muthamma Muthu Muthu Muthalamma" in Sridhar's last flop "Thandhu Vittaen Unnai" (*ing Vikram) which I think is one of Arunmozhi's earliest songs. It's a real gem,a soft duet with excellent lyrics.

  Thanks for listing the lyrics of IR in Nadodi Thendral.
  
  There's one correction though:
  
  "yaarum viLayaadum thottam
  thinandhorum aattam paattam
  pottaalum poruthukkondu
  ponnu dorai saami
  indha mannu namma boomi"
  
  In the 2nd last line, it should read
  "Ponnu Tharum SAmi
  Indha mannu namma boomi"
  
  ie. the land (Mannu) gives gold (Ponnu), in spite of all the insults meted out to her.
  
  By the way, there's another great song, a 'sOga Kadhal ThOlvi number', sung by Pandiyan in the film which has a very nice tune and matching lyrics too. Do you know the lyrics?

  Oh!!! Sorry. I intended to post only "ponnu tharum sami". But, somehow, usually whenever I sing that song, I used to say "dorai" only. I don't know why. But, I knew that it was "ponnu tharum sami" only. Anyway, sorry about that and thank you very much for that correction.
  
  Regarding that "Kadhal tholvi song" in the same film, I think you are referring to the song sung by MV. It is
  
  "Yelamalaik kaattukkuLLa yettadukku koottukkuLLA
  solaikkuyil paatuch chatham kaetkavillayo oh sondhamillayo"

  IR always writes or suggest the starting line and the Lyric writers fill up the rest. That really shows his talent as the MOST NATURAL MD EVER

  one a MOST NATURAL MD EVER because when you compose a song you compose the music and the tune.
  IR in most of his songs has a starting line in mind and composes the song. Since the MD is the originator of the tune and music he is the right person to suggest an appropriate starting line for the Song. The starting line evolves more naturally
  and aptly when it comes from the MD. That makes IR as the Most Natural Composer/MD ever
