Bhoori as far as i know this is the second movie in which character played by MGR dies in the end(the other one is 'raja desing')
Maalaiyum iravum sandhikkum idathil is for KK and sheela right?

On 4: I think this was the time PBS was new 'news' and both Sivaji & MGR were trying him out. PBS specifically mentions this one & neeyO naanO yaar nilavE in mannathi mannan as songs he sang for MGR. It's a take-off on kambar's ramAyaNam - kaivaNNam angu kaNdEn, kaal vaNNam ingu kaNdEn
maivaNNaththu arakki pOril mazhai vaNNaththu annalE un...
about the ahalihai episode referring the destruction of thAdagai.

Bhoori:
I think pAsam was one of those casual movies which
was done with little interest from MGR.
There is a scene in which MGR visits Sheela's
house (Asokan comes as her brother, I think).
MGR falls in love with her. After eating he
washes his hands.. looks at Sheila and starts
dreaming a bit.. and at that scene did you
notice the bgm music for a couple of minutes?
That same bgm piece became a big hit song in
a Sridhar movie a few years later.

<<<<< Kan Vannam Inge Kanden Kai Vannam Ange Kanden
Seems to be inspired by literary lines. Anybody can throw some light on this? >>>>>
I think the inspiration could be from kamba rAmAyaNam, when kambar glorifies reincarnation of Lord Vishnu as RAMA after his feet touched arunthathi, as he goes ".. kai vaNNam andRu kaNdaen" , quoting the incident when RAMA broke the arch and ".. un kAl vaNNam indRu kaNdaen.." exemplifying arunthathi's vimOtchanam after RAMA's feet touched her.

Guys Actor Jaishankar is dead. Though i was not a big fan of his films i enjoyed his film songs. He was a decent actor and did variety of roles in later part of his film career

Jaishankars Death:
That really feels a little bad. There were two times in my life when I was a hardcore Jaishankar fan. When I was a school kid, I thought movies like Thunive Thunai and Vallavan Oruvan and CID Shankar are really good. When I was in college, Jambu was a cult movie.
He has quite a few good movies to his credit e.g. Kuzhandaiyum Dheivamum, Poova Thalaiya, Nootthukku Nooru, Pugundha Veedu, Iravum Pagalum (his first movie). I liked his underacting in Thalapathi too. Unfortunately, he was cast as the cowboy, James Bond in the late sixties and early seventies and he never really grew out of that. Of course all actors in 60s suffered from Sivajitis.
I dont think he contributed to TFM the way MGR did. Come to think of it, I dont think there is a brand name Jaishankar in TFM.
The best voice for him, IMO, is TMS. SPB would hv been okay too. Did anybody else (KJJ, PBS, Seergazhi etc. give voice ot him?)
Ramki: MGR dies in Madurai Veeran too.
SK: In thirai.ambalam.com, there is a series in which people interacted with MGR describe their experiences. TR Ramanna does so. It is a movie by TRR with TR Rajakumari playing MGRs mother. According to TRR, they did Pasam with lot of enthuasism but the audience rejected MGRs death - which confirmed MGRs opinion that he should never die in a movie. I rented Pasam because of that article. They meant this as an experiment; the audience loved most of the movie. TRR is convinced that if they hadnt killed MGR off, the movie would hv been a great success.

Saw another MGR starrer this week: Pudhia Bhoomi (1968)
Music: MSV asst Govardanam. Songs Kannadasan & Poovai Senguttuvan
Singers: TMS, PS, LRE
1. Nandandi Kathi Nalla Muthu Pethi
Jayalalithas introduction song; she and Ramaprabha play Kilitthattu. Can anybody enlighten me on how to play this game?
2. ???
Song picturised on Jayalalitha with MGR playing bagpipes. Cant recall the song.
3. Chiinnvalai Mugam Sivandavalai
Good MGR duet.
4. Naan Ungal Veettup Pillai
Standard MGR song with the usual political references - Perarignar Kaattum paadhai
5. Vizhiye Vizhiye Unakkenna Velai
Can someone explain this lyric? Whats the connection between wondering about the function of eyes and asking about dinner the next day? Followed by Thoodhu Selladi Medhuvaga. Who is going to go on Thoodhu? Vizhigal again? So why do you ask Vizhiye Vizhiye Unakkenna Velai?
Overall, average music for an MGR movie. Chinnavalai is the only good lyric.
Surprising to see that Govardanam is the asst for MSV in this one. He went on his own in 1960 at least for Kai Rasi with very successful songs. Pattinatthil Bhootham was in the late sixties, I think. How come he had to become an asst to MSV?

vizhiyE vizhiyE is one of those casual
(dont-look-for-any-meaning) type of
'kAmaththup pAl' songs! :-))
The hero is looking at the heroine's eyes and
asking them to convey the following message to
the heroine's mind..
'virundhu'kku varavA nALaikku mAlai?
And the heroine replies..
virundhu endrAlum varalAm varalAm
marundhu thandhAlum tharalAm
idhil nALaiyenna nalla vELaiyenna
ingu nAngu kaNgaLum uRavAda
A lot of crap from Kannadhasan in this song!
Whatever the lyrics, the tune and beats are very
nice in this song.. and for that you can hear
the song many times.

Pasam is one of the best films of MGR. There are excellent songs for different situations.
1) Uravu Solla Oruvan Endru Vazhbavan is a song that depicts the character of MGR.
"Pon Porulai Kollai Kolla Oduvaan-yaarum Annai enru sollivitaaal vaaduvan
Than porulai pirarku thanthu thetruvaan-varum kaalai varai thunaikku vanthu vaazhthuvaan"
"Pasi Eduthaal Paainthu Varum Puli Avan--anaal pazhakkathilum paasathilum iniyavan. Kalai Azhagai rasippathiley puthiyavan- perum kattazhagu thirndirukkum" ilayavan"
2. Ther ethu Silai ethu is again a song that equates MGR with God.
In the absence of MGR Saro sings
"Therethu silai ethu thirnaal ethu-deivathaiye (MGR)manitharellaam Maranthapothu"
The moment MGR appears, Saro changes the subject
"Therethu Silai ethu Thirunaal Ethu Manitharellaam (MGR) deivamaaga maarumpothu"
3. Paal Vannam Paruvam Kandu is lifted from Kambaramayanam. Kannadasan has p;layed with words in this great song.
4.Ulakam Piranthathu enakkaga was a song that Kannadasan wrote about his owm hey days( Vasantha kalangal), but suited well with MGR. It is a motivational song of MGR.
5. Malayum Iravum is another good song.
6. Jal Jal Jal ennum salangai oli has a story behind it. In one of the public talks Kannadasan has mentioned "Mudhal Iravai Pola oru Mosamaana Iravu Veru Ethuvum Illai. Ethanayum suththamaaga seithu mudikka iyalaathu" So in this song he expresses it this way
"Muthan muthal thirudiya kaaranathinaal muzhusaai thirud amaranthuvitten"
Pasam was taken with great expectations of course. But the death scene had spoilt the run of the film. When the film was first screened in Paragon Theatre, the hardocre MGR fans went up the stage and tore off the screen immediately after MGR died in the film. The next show had to be delayed. But the film continued to run under some security. But the fans did not or could not wait for the end scene. So they sadly walked out just before MGR died. This was seen as an insult to MGR. The film had to end after 40 days run for this reason. But the fans loved the songs. The songs are evergreen even to these days. Had MGR not died, the film would have run very well.
The other films where MGR dies
1) En Thangai
2) Madurai Veeran
3) Raja Desingh
4) Adimai Penn (Father)
5) Netru Inru Naalai(The other MGR)
