Some of the songs Jaya chandran sang for IR, are absolute beauties, be it the breezy duet "Poonthendrale" along with Vani Jayaram or the "Thaalatuthe Vaanam" with SJ. He sang around 70 songs for IR, out of which around 80% are proclaimed hits.
Lets discuss about the songs, the films and why IR choose JC to sing only few songs , even though some of the songs were huge hits.

1. Poonthendrale Nalla Kaalam (Bhuvana oru kelvikkuri)
- 1977
-------------------------------------------------------------
This Jayachandran and Vani Jayaram duet amazes me every time i hear it. I Particularly like the pallavi. The over lap singing in the charanams, by both the singers taking their turn, is a clear indication of IR’s ingenuity early in his career. Vani and Jayachandrans romantic singing elevates this song.
Jayachandrans first association with IR probably. Both the singers complementing each other make this a delightful song. Listen particularly the way Vani sings at the end of the song. Terrific!
2. Alaye Kadal Alaye - Thiru Kalyanam - 1978
--------------------------------------------------
An absolute gem of a song. Apart from SPB and Janaki combination in singing breezy romantic songs, i strongly believe Jayachandran and Janaki combination is right up there with SPB’s. This song is a testimony to my statement.
This song starts with Janaki singing the pallavi "Alaye kadal alaye, yaen adukirai, yenna thedikurai, enba ninaivugalil padukirai, ennannamo unn aasaigal", accompanied by a guitar.
I love the way, Jayachandran opens his account, by taking it away from Janaki. Both the singers sing the word "Alaiye" and while Janaki stops, JC continues (Remember kaadhal kavithaigal from gopura vasalalile). A brilliant song!
3. Chithirai Sevvaanam - Kaatrinile Varum Geetham - 1978
---------------------------------------------------------
Given the penchant of IR to produce Rustic rural songs, which gladly evokes nostalgia, making us all travel down memory lanes to our beloved villages, "chithirai sevvaanam", sung by Jayachandran is an absolute beauty. Jayachandran’s first solo with IR, which he carries so effortlessly, makes this song as one of my favorites.
This movie also had some fabulous songs like "kaatrinile Varum geetham"(2 versions) one by Janaki and the other (the eerie version) by Vani Jayaram. A collectors album this one, that’s for sure.

4. Maanjolai Kizhi thaano - Kizhakke Pogum Rail - 1978
-------------------------------------------------------
Brilliant singing man!. A composition that stills remains fresh even after 26 years since its birth. Radhika’s first movie along with Sudhakar along with bharathi raja as its director was a block-bluster.
5. Geetha Sangeetha - Anbae sangeetha - 1979.
-------------------------------------------------
Yet another masterpiece composition from IR, this time jayachandran teams up with jency.
The way the song starts is a delight to ones ears. The humming by jency followed by the violins providing perfect back up to the pallavi. Jayachandran sings the pallavi and the first charanam. Counter point composition steps in, when jayachandran sings, "Geetha", jency sings "Kannaa", and when JC goes "Sangeetha", jency follows it up with "Kannaa". Ah!,what more can we ask for (Except for the jencys' nasal singing :)).
Jency sings the second charanam alone while the counterpoint composition steps in, towards the end of the song. A treat to u’r musical ears.
6. Vaazhkkaye - 6 to 60 Varai - 1979
---------------------------------------------
The other song "Kannmaniye Kaadhal Enbathu" stole the show. Nevertheless, a very good melancholic song.
7. Velli Nilavilinile - Sonnadhu Nee thaana - 1979.
--------------------------------------------------------
Another great solo song. I especially like the charanam. A great, great song.
"Vizhiyo kaarthigai theepam, Ozhi Vaa Vaa endrathu", this song had commendable lyrics (Is it kannadhasaan?). Listen to JC’s singing. Perfect.
8. Oothakaathu Visayile - Gramathu Athiyam - 1980
---------------------------------------------------
"Ootha kaathu Visayile kuyilu Koovayile", the rapport between the two singers, JC and SJ again comes to the fore with this song. A rustic song. The singers effectively bring out the emotions. Class act!.
9. Thavikkuthu Thayanguthu - Nadhiyai Thedi Vantha Kadal - 1980
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This has to be up there in the top 10 greatest song of IR (If anything of sort is to be listed, which i dont think can ever be prepared!!!).
Every one points to "Poonthalir Aada" for bass guitar, but i guess, this song is right up there, may be better, i don’t know purist please divulge. (Bass Guitar Vicky!!U'r turn please!!)
Jayachandrans and shailaja's exuberant singing takes this song to perfection, a perfect 10 out of 10 if i had to rate. 3-part charanam, a fast jazzy based composition with IR’s trademark transition to indian classical and the subsequent transformation to its western composition with the use of guitar is purely ingenuity.
"Gangai konda chozhanin, kanavil vantha deviye,Mangai enthan Vaazhvile....."
A great song...., one not to be missed by an IR fan.

10. Thaalatuthe Vaanam - Kadal Meengal - 1981.
---------------------------------------------------
Beauty of dawn brilliantly captured in 4:30 minute song. Eloquent singing, by both JC and SJ makes this song immortal. Lot of people had written about this song, so i will limit my self to this much. AWESOME SONG!!

That is a real homage to the genius of Jayachhandran!
Thanks Osho!
Jayachandran's Non-IR songs like "Kadavul vazhum koilile.." are also equally good.

`rAsAthi onna kANAdha nenju' is arguably the biggest JC hit under Raja's baton...(film -vaidhEhi kAthirundhAL. It had a memorable semi classical number 'indRaikku Enindha AnandhamE' by JC with VJ. Another hit from this movie by JC is 'kAthirundhu'). I think there was a time period when Raja used one male singer per movie (plus himself for title/folk/thathuva background number) or one voice per movie character...the choice of the singer would have been due to many factors such as:
a) Singer's availability (SPB was flying around)
b) Budget allocation by producer (IR will sing max if it was pAvalar creations:-))
c) Story line (JC/KJY/SPB/MV/IR -any one of them can sing folk but urban style songs needed SPB or his clone:-))

poonthendralE nee paadivaa (SAR)
paal nilavu kaainthathE (SG)
en mana kootukuLLE (MSV)
kadal alai kaalkaLai (Rathina sooriyan)
plenty more if you want the list :)

7. Velli Nilavilinile - Sonnadhu Nee thaana - 1979. , is indeed a great song, hats off to PJ & IR!
I don't agree with u about PJ (even though being a great singer) taking the song away from SJ, SJ is the lady version of the greatest SPB!
but PJ had better tamil pronounciation over fellow singer the great KJY, in tamil!
I really like PJ's voice, of course only after SPB's :))

Osho, don't forget "Kaaveri Gangaikku Mele" , in Idhayathil Oru Idam. "PoonThendraley Ithu Nalla" is a wildly perfect and incredible composition as a whole. It has got a few unique features, in Hindi I think Ravindra Jain attempted somethign similar in a song by KJY and LMangeshkar, beautiful but not anywhere as supremely wild as IR' Poon thendralye Ithu Nallar.
There are some more PJ_IR & PJ_MSV/SG songs that have gone unnoticed, will talk later
I think in Malayalam, you must've heard two knockout songs:
Ponnushasil Upavanangalil (Salil) with a most beautiful, beautiful heavenly prelude - I think IR modeled Poonthendrale Ithu prelude "sound" (only that) based on this mallu song.
Plus, that Devarajan song "Chakravarthini Prema Chakravarthini"
more out of the world mal MSV and MKA songs of PJ also later

Osho, great recollections! IR gave some wonderful songs to JC. Even if they were not numerous, most of them are memorable. Some more stunners from those early years:
1977:
Devi--senthoora kolam en sringara deepam- Durgadevi- with SJ
1978:
Oru vaanavil poley- Kaatrinile Varum Geetham-with SJ- what a song!!
1979:
Azhage unnai aarathanai seigiren- Azhage Unnai Aarathikkiren- a short song, but the allure is complete
Hey masthana- Azhage Unnai aarathikkiren- a catchy song, alternating between the two pairs: JC & Jency/ SPB & VJ
Manjal nilavukku indru orey sugam- Mudhal Iravu- with PS- a vinatge IR gem!
Vaanam ingey megam ingey- Nenjilaadum Poo Ondru- with SJ-- a stunner in every sense-- watch out for JC's entry, heralded by chorus voices, in the charanam-- mesmerizing!
Akka oru raajaathi- Mugathil Mugam Paarkkalaam- with Jency- a breezy duet.
Pethaalum pethenada- Anbe Sangeetha- with SPS- a fun-filled song, sung with comical abandon by JC!
Sevvaname ponmegame- Nallathoru Kudumbam- again a gang of 4- JC, T.L.Maharajan, B.S.Sasirekha & Kalyani Menon.
Kalaiyo silaiyo idhu ponmaan nilaiyo- Pagalil Oru Iravu- JC in his mellifluous elements!- Remember the beauty of the charanam- pooncholai mounam thaan paribaashayo, puriyadha jaadai enna uravaagumo?
1980:
Maharani unai thedi- Aayiram Vaasal Idhayam- with SJ
Nenjil ulla kaayam ondru- Rishimoolam- can melancholy ever be so appealing?
Kaveri gangaikku mele- Idhayathil Or Idam- with SPS
Aathankaraiyil oru roja- Orey Muththam- with PS
Raja ponnu adi vaadiyamma- Orey Muththam
Many more in the 80s!
Of course, JC sang some unforgettable songs for MSV, S-G and GA too.

Osho,
you should have added your first post in this thread to the thread header itself...miss paniteengale :-)
Anyways, as said already, nice write up.
Raghu, i agree with you...JC had better grip over pronounciations when compared to KJY.
