S. J. SURYAH'S HOLD over the Tamil box-office is simply amazing. Four years after the release of "Kushi", a blockbuster, the director has turned hero with "New". The film has taken a fantastic opening all over Tamil Nadu to the surprise of the trade, as two months back, its bilingual in Telugu ("Naani") went without a trace. This in fact created distribution problems for "New", and later, the regional censor board also effected major visual and dialogue cuts. But Surya was optimistic and went ahead to release the film in 117 screens in Tamil Nadu where the opening day collection crossed Rs. 1 crore! Said Surya: "`New' is turning out to be a mega hit and the very same industry pundits who had written off the film before its release are saying that it will do better business than `Ghillli'."

  This Movie is bleneded with Sex and Double Meanings. I am sure after one or two weeks, the same media people will write it as a disaster one. No body can watch this movie with family. It has some enternaining portions. But too much double meaning dialouges spoiled it. Autograph and Gilli were hits, becase in these movies, if you see the crowd, many families watched. Here only college-goers and front bench audiences can only watch. So may be for first one or two weeks, it will have good collection. Then surely, it will fade. It cannot create big collections like GIlli and Autograph received. Better luck to Surya.

  I am not so sure.
  Tamil people are totally unpredictable.
  The same argument was put forth for Thulluvadho ilamai and see what happened.
  There is this secret urge in everyone which make movies like this become a 'hit'.
  They may condemn the theme but will secretly go and see the movie alone.
  Mundhanai Mudichchu, TI, and now New.... I have a feeling that it will be a hit.
  BOYS was a different story.. it was semi-porno and was more of an 'action' [!!] movie.
  But if you have this double meaning dialoges etc, people will go for it....i think.

  NO...First half of NEW is very entertaining...But second half is so boring...In Mayajaal multiplex today weekday lots of family people among audience.Per ticket 150 rupees..I am told in Chennai all shows are booked in advance till Sunday at all regular theatres...Hero is matured version of Dhanush with effiminate acting style....Over all very ordinary film...Can't predict tamil audience....Very Surprising....

  I guess a huge chunk was cut out of the online version of this movie cuz it seemed like a hilarious movie.the double meanings werent that horrible.I enjoyed the movie.was a very good comedy that was entertaining all the way thru...course portions were cut out on the online version so there may have been boring parts.
  
  wat i found hilarious were sum of the reviews which whine abt the movie being illogical LOL. when its suppose to be a fanatasy type of movie of course its going to be illogical.
  
  too bad the kalaiyil dhinamam instrumental wasnt on the cd.cant wait for this movie to come out on dvd i wanna see the full kaliyil dhinamam song and if u wanna song.

  It may be house ful for weeks but it could not be regarded as hit. Perhaps what made it worked was the time of release. the film was released where there are no hits except gilli in recent past. so people will go and see this movie.
  
  but the songs r not new its "old"
  For this purpose,there is no need to call ARR and compose music. Even a pop album composer,would have re-mixed well. i think ARR suits for this...

  It did o to the dustbin in AP State where people rejected it outright. But, Surya had great confidence with the Tamil people['s arippu] and we didn't fail him, it appears.!!
  BTW, let me honest, after a very long time, this movie's success is largely responsible due to some godd, hearable, music from ARR. Of late, one has to buy the CD to really know what the lyrics are which is a pain as while watching the movie, most of the time, the lyrics are submerged in the wild music, or cut short, or simple irrelevent.
  I could hear and enjoy[!] the lyrics along with the music in this movie. And, that's a main reason as some of the songs are placed in very apt situations. This has really re-affirmed my confidence in ARR that he can score such music too, once in a while. If he understands this, that making the viewer to hear the lyrics also in the theater, he can regain his original position back! This is only my views.

  Do we (public) leave any choice for movie makers? They got to make movies which can not be watched with your family at home, so you come to the theater. Otherwise, most of the families watch movies at home, on VCD....
  
  Even these movies also attract lot of 15-25 year olds only... Thats the group spending money on films in theatre...
