I agree that Lata should quit. When I hear some of her old classics and her voice now, it is disgusting...

She has Ghost voice for last 15 years....As KJY pointed out few years ago LATA should withdraw herself from total singing even on stage shows....TNS

i think her voice is different from those days, but is still GOOD.
maybe we cannot hear her old style anymore, but she is giving us different flavor which has a punch of its own... try listening to Jiya Jale from Dil Se for example.... not many ladies who are 70 at age can do that!!!

Siva: Not many ladies who are 70 can do that......and since Preety Zinta was playing the role of a 70 year old, it made perfect sense:-)

Along time to today,Lata mangeshkar has a beauty voice.Since a few years, she select the songs and Lata will sing if she wants. She has the gift, the talent to singer.Listen songs of "Dil se", "Kabhi khushi kabhi ghum","One two ka four" ,"Zubeidda","Mohabattein","Lajja"...She sings very well. For release "Lal salaam", "Devdas","Mujhse dosti karoge"...Lata is the melody queen at 72 years old.The person who write she should stop singing, doesn't listen her songs or he doensn' t serious.

Lata loves singing... so she sings!
Singing also being an art doesn't fall under the category of regular professions where one is expected to retire. It's a labor of love for these people and as long as a singer gets chance, he or she will continue to sing.

I agree with K. However, I believe, Lata can restrict her assignments to a few "select" songs every year - and there's a sub-clause to this: those songs she sings for film playback can be songs that are reflective of her stature, the current state of her voice, and the limitations age brings to the voice of a singer. So all things considered, Lata (if one can even have the audacity to suggest this) can avoid:
High octaves, falsettos, adolescencent/pre-pubescent romantic numbers, and racy/fast-paced songs should also be kept at bay. These aspects/types of songs introduce a significant credibility/ability gap now. She can concentrate on bhajans, kirtans, and geets. The film songs she chooses can also be from the above genre. Lata is an institution - but she can always choose to be a Singer Emerita in her own institute, can't she?

I am a complete LM,PS fan. But they days are over - they are humans (though geniuses) after all, not goddesses. Limitations are bound to be there.
I just heard an old lata song from madhumati yeserday on television. That was followed by her recent song in "one 2 ka 4". I felt bad, being a staunch lata fan, the difference was that between +ve and -ve Infinity :)

She is known all around the world for her beautiful voice by all types of people. Now her own people is going to bad talk her? Give me a break!!!!!!!

why is Lata being discussed here in TFM. is it because she sang" valayosai kala kala". Anyhow her last good song was "yaara seeli seeli" from Lekhin athan piragu ellame "silly silly". Imagine mere khwabon mein from DDLJ & to think public lapped it up makes it all the more painful.

I agree too ... better to quit when the voice is still good !!
its not that everyone who is old doesnt have a good voice.. i would cite Asha Bhonsle as one example .. she is only 2 years younger than Lata . but her voice is much younger.. she sings melody and masth songs equally well.. ( eg. vennila venniala from "iruvar".. september maadham from "alaipaayudhey".. engengey engegey from "nerukku nerr".. ) and ofcourse the score of songs in hindi ( latest being Khallas from company.. )
But Lata's voice isnt as good . better that she calls it a day and quit !

asha is 4 and half years younger. Nowadays Asha sings at a pitch that can easily smash off the glass doors and windows. Thats what I felt when i heard her screech in khallas.

I agree with Naaz. He has said it right. Every artist has a right to use their gift at any age. Its their own wish that they sing. Nobody can stop Lata from singing. But she can always choose the type of songs she delivers in movies. Her voice is only suitable for some type of songs. So, do Asha's. She is no way superior than Lata. She screeches well as told by avr. Anyways, dont tease artists. The taste sense has gotten worse up with the present generation and they don't have the patience to listen or enjoy the songs sung by old artistes. Dappangoothu is enjoyed so as songs without any raagas or with western mix...full of loud noises where hardly any lyrics is audible. Try to listen to your type of songs and avoid listening to the songs you don't like or sung by old ones. Thats the best you can do. good listening. bye

allllll u guyz dont know anything about music. if the melody queen LATA MANGESHKAR should retire, then there must be no one in the industry to sing. Lata is the best and the ones who say she has to retire they r deaf. from chale jana nahin (shabaab) 1942, till andekha anjaana sa (mujhse dosti karogi) 2002 lata still the best, i dont mean good, but the best means no one still can compete with her. im a fan of her, im 22 years old, i heard almost all her songs, from her beginig till the date.
the guy who said that he heard her in madhumati and now in one two ka four and there is a long gap, what do u expect u want the voice to b the same? she was exccellent in madumati and excellent in one two ka four. anyone heard songs of LEKIN?? if no u deaf guyz who said she has to retire go and hear it and u will know what i mean.
the guy who compared her to asha, asha is nowhere able to reach what lata achieved. do u think that crap song Khallas is nice????????????? if u think so then go to doctor and ask him for ear drops. see lata`s O paalanhare from Lagaan, hear kabhie khushi kabhi gham these songs just make u fly with happinnes. latas vocie is spritual more than just a voice.
as a personal matter , whenever im angry, nervous or so just when i hear her voice my heart beats, my soul goes up , out of my body. thats how a music should do, not bringing headache like the bad u listen to these days

Hello: Lata stinks since eerly 1970's. Shge might have been the greatest...guiness ..book...blah..blah..blah..letsbe realistic..not for the sake of northie argument....
Its hard to keep a voice intact for maore than 15 years...age definitely takes a toll. LM is no different than PSusheela or other singers who were blessed in their times. I thought AB was much better than LM in the late 70s into 80s.
What a piece of crap..if someone thinks...that LM is still rules..She is history.......
