Hope this shall prove a feast to IR fans. IR has invariably used the same raga for conveying different situations eg:
Raga Mohanam:
(1)Vandhadhey kungumam - love
(2)Nilavu thoongum neram - lullaby
(3)Ninnukori varnam - feet tapper
(4)Idhayam oru kovil - meloncholy
(5)Paruvamey - freshness of the dawn
There may be use of anya swaras. but that must not matter to a great extent. This thread may also discuss the works of other MDs. But the appreciation shall be better if different songs in the same raga of an MD is discussed. this may help us get a good look into the versatility of MD.

different songs in the same raga...this thread automatically limits itself to mainly MSV asnd IR atleast for the last 30 years or so due to the nature of the topic.
sivaranjani (who else?):
1. unnai thaane - love song
2. kuyil paatu - sad solo
3. pon maane kobam - teasing song
other notable ones:
1. kannum kannum - thiruda thiruda
excellent use of sivaranjani in a fast paced dance song.
2. ennai thedum neram sabai vandhu serum - good duet by VJ and SPB.
3. sivaranjani - archanai- SPB solo love song.
4. kattayak kaadhal vendam - film name? can someone help? i heard this song while travelling in a bus, do not know the film name or the MD. it is a new film released somewhere between 1994 and 1996.
5. moongililai kaadugale - penmani aval kanmani - nice duet.
6. maamarathu pooveduthu - once again a steamy duet from oomai vizhigal.

Hi folks,
I have absolutely NO knowledge of ragas. But, i always wonder as to what makes some songs based on certain ragas HAUNT peoples mind invariably. For example "Malare mounama" and "Nee kAtru" as somebody posted in VS thread seem to follow same raga 'kannada dharbari'. These are melodies that i will listen for ever. Also, there are other melodies like "AgAya gangai", "thAlAttuthE vAnam" that stay in my memory. Interestingly, when i was in bombay , i was obsessed with some ghazals by gulham ali and pankaj udhas (even today i like them). To me they sounded very melodious apart from conveying meaning of day to day life. (Of course, gulam ali is difficult to understand sometimes as his are more urdhu). What kind of ragas are these based on?
Another interesting query, is "thiruvAsagam" chanting based on certain raga?. Why does it make one so much melting and many a times cry?

swarapriyan/Murali Sankar,
Great thread, guys. This thread has the potential to become a permanent thread. I wish more knowledgeable folks would contribute here and enlighten ragam-challenged people like me.
I have heard that "Aezhu Swarangalukkul" was done in a rare ragam-pandhukaviraali. Are there any other songs in that raagam for a different mood?

Good thread Muarli. IR definetly has a good handle of Hindolam.
1. Sri Devi En Vaazhvil... (Bhakthi)
2. Naan Thaedum, Sevvandhi poo vidhu (love song)
3. Siru ponmani asayum adhil therikkum pudhu isayum (dream song)
4. Anandha Thaen Kaatru Thaalaattudae (love song)
5. Ennai vittu Odi poga mudiyuma (not by IR)
Another raga, effectively handled by IR is Mayamalavagowle. The songs are:
1. Poongadhavae... Thaazh thiravaai (frm Nizhalgal, nice duet)
2. Appanendrum annai endrum (frm Guna, Philosophical)
3. Madhurai Marikozhundhu vaasam (frm Karagatakaran, folk)
...more later

I dont know much but my few cents worth
Raga: Shanmukhapriya
1. Kannukkul nooru nilva idhu oru kanava( from Vedham Pudhidhu, romatic song )
2. Kaadhal kasakkudhaiya vara vara kaadhal kasukkudhaiya( from AanpAvam, kinda kindal fun song )
3. SollayO vAithirandhu( from Mogamul, for viragha dhaapam )
4. Maraindhirundhu paarkkum amrumam( from Thiullaana mohanaambal, kindal, konjal etc between lovers )
Special mention has to be made for "kaadhal kasukkudhaiya .." I wonder how the knowledgable junta ( purists ) would have reacted to this. I know that another famous raaga or popular raaga that has been used in numerous different situations is kalyaani.

udhaya,
swarapriyan and murali sankar are aliases. they refer to the same person.
as much as possible, let us stick to different songs in a raga COMPOSED BY THE SAME MD whoever it is.
sindhubhairavi (IR) :
1. naan oru sindhu - melancholy
2. oru naalum unai maravaadhu - duet
3. nilave mugam kaatu - melancholy
4. muthu mani maalai - duet
5. aatama therottama - dance song
6. kottunga kottunga naala melam - idhu namma aalu - duet
7. annanukku annanmaaru - thalaatu ketkudhamma - group dance
8. amman koil kumbam enge - aranmanai kili? - devotional
other notable songs :
1. unakenna (MSV)- simla special - sorrowful dance
2. ennai yaarendru (MSV-TKR) - paalum pazhamum - melancholy
as we can see sindhu bhairavi has been predominantly used for melancholy based songs.

Regarding Shanmugapriya:
Another to the list is the "tham thana tham than thaalam varum". this comes in a Bhagyaraj movie.
I shall take up for discussion Raga "Sudhdha Dhanyaasi". this has countless numbers in TFM especially from Raja.
"Punjai undu Nanjai Undu" - IR
This is a light song by SPB with a rhythm that makes us dance. The jathigal and snadham of the song are high paced making the listener feel that it is a raga which is used for representing a joutous mood.
"Vizhiyil Vizhundhu"
This song is in utter contrast to the above though it is in the same raga. It symbolises the longing, love and romance.Though it starts slow it runs with Mridhangam later and halts occassionally to add elgance.
"Unnai ethiparthaen"
this song from Vanaja girija is on the lines of "Ennullay Ennullay" which takes the listener to a different mood altogether because of its attractive choral harmony. It is basically more western in approach.
"Oorandangum Saamathilayae" - IR - Pudhuppatti ponnuthayi
A treat for those who love different soothing rhythms. It has an interlude (so simple for the standards of IR). Infact it is one among the few songs where the foirst and second interludes are the same.
"Maalayil Yaaro"
No commennts. It is a sheer good song from Shatriyan. Swarnalatha at her best. It haunts. I had ended up listening this 20 times consecutively.
"Vilakku Vaippom"
rarely are the songs choreographed well. this is one among them. It is devotionalrendition(?!!)in accordance with the movie. But this is probably one of the songs with a new rhythm altogether. This has all the potential to go to discotheques.
"Kannan Engey" - MSV
This needs a special mention. MSV and his imagination - One of the greatest works.
"Maargazhi Poovae" - ARR
This in accordance with the purists is a "sodhappal" paattu because it does explicitly say if it is in "Hindholam" or "Sudhdha dhanyaasi". if it is in "hindholam" then the swara prayoga is
"SGMDD GMDMM "
and if it is in "SD" it is
"PNSGG NSGSS"
Infact there are other classicals too:
"Raagavane Ramana "

murali sankar,
u missed the greatest of them all in sudha dhanyaasi. it is 'maasi maasam' from dharmadurai.
'kannan enge nenjamum ange' by PS is also a great number.
'ennai thottu pinnikonda" by swarnalatha from
unna nenachen paatu padichen also sounds like sudha dhanyaasi, also i have a feeling it might be reethi gowlai.

Dear Vijay,
Please note that all the songs I have mentioned are in "pure" "SD" wheras Maasi maasam is not. It has the usage of "R" which is prohibited in "SD". the aarohanam/avarohanam is "SGMPNS - SNPMGS .In maasi maasam "Maaman unakku thaney" - reads "GG RRN SS". Hence I did not mention it.

u have permitted the use of anya swaras :-))) in the topic introduction. maasi maasam is closest to sudha dhanyaasi.

Dear guys,
The use of the same raga for two different situations is not only evident in songs but also in background music. The best example is the BGM score in Mouna Raagam. The same tune in fact, is able to bring about the differences in situations, i.e., when played on piano it sounds melodious, when played on violin it indicates seriousness and when played on the harpshichord it indicates playfulness. Note it the next time you see the movie.
