TFM DFers,
I plan to be in Madras this winter, and will be carrying a huge list of songs that I have compiled from inputs of all of you fellow TFM DFers. I am interested to know which are the really good places in Madras where I can get quality recording done. I would also request you people to suggest me the best quality of media, other than CDs, what make and type of tape that I should use for quality recording.
Your inputs are surely welcome. Also, if anyone wants me to make any specific recordings, you are welcome to email me. I will make sure that I will get them done.

Hi Prakash:
I have just returned from Chennai after spending 8 weeks there. Here is the bad news: The government has banned dubbing of audio of all kinds. I heard that all that started when "Jeans" crew got a stay order to not allow dubbing of "Jeans" songs and with thay stay order, they also availed the help of Karate Man "Husaini" who with his gang rounded all audio shops to make sure no one dared to copy "Jeans" songs. When dubbing for "Jeans" was successfully stopped, other producers, distributors and audio recording companies applied and got the stay order against dubbing. So, it has been officially decalared that "dubbing/copying" of audio and video is Illegal.
So, all the shops, big and small, have stopped dubbing of songs. There may be some who may still manage to provide this service secretly, but I am not aware of any. All the shops who have recorded songs for me in the past( all quality recordings ) have completely cleaned up the store and sell only original CDs and cassettes which is what I brought from Chennai.( some of theese original cassettes are a waste of money which did not matter when I used to copy mutliple such mediocre movie songs into one cassette ).
Anyway, good luck!

I am not interested in dubbing the songs. What I wanted to know was, are there shops who will record the songs of my choice on media that I can give them. I have my own list of songs that I want recorded.
thanks for that info though.

Prakash:
I lost you! What do you mean by recording your choice of songs on a media of your choice?
What I mean by dubbing is this: I take a plain audio cassette such as TDK SA90, SONY CD90, MAXELL or FUJI or whatever kind and ask them to record 2 songs from "Poonthottam", 2 from "Uyire", 1 song from "Aval Varuvaala", 3 songs from "Priyamudan", 2 from "Kaathala Kaathala" and so on and so forth upto like about 16 songs. This is what I call as audio dubbing; similarily, you can do video dubbing( recording oliyum oliyum ) on video cassettes. From your note, that's what I figured. If this is what you want, then you may not be able to do in Chennai now. If it is something else, please explain.
Muthax: Azaatheymma. Nilamai padumosmathaan! What to do? Audio recording panrathu ennudaiya ovvoru chennai-vijayathilum, oru mukkiyamanaa amsam. That was all gone. Irunthaalum, Chennai Vijayam amarkkalamthaan! So, intha daba, 50 audio original cassettes plus oru 30 CDs vaangi vanthein.

Amar,
You must have a great collection. Please check out the "Index list for hard-to-find TFM" thread and see for how many people you can play Santa. You can also post your wish-list there.

I am sure that all the re-recording kadais we have in Madras will be back in business, after the initial raids. Reminds me of the police raids on illegal shops on pavements, the next day it is business as usual. Initially when I read your post, I thought it was karate mani who was doing the cleaning job. It will be business as usual after sometime.

Dear Prakash avargaley,
Neengal iruppadhu Ashok Nagar yendraal, here is my list of recording shops for you -
1. Audio Point - KK NAGAR Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan stop - adhaavadhu 17D,17 J pondra perundhugal yellaam nirkkum stop - indha stop il irundhu oru 200 yards towards West KK Nagar side nadandhaal, idadhu kai pakkam, ungal kangalukku kulirchhiyaaga AUDIO POINT theriyum - I have recorded umpteen no.of cassettes from LP/Cassettes/CDs onto cassettes. This guy has a terrific collection, starting from the 1950s to the latest, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and even English !!
2. ANUDH AUDIO CENTRE - 17 RR alladhu Vadapalaniyil irundhu Mangadu varai sellum veru yedhaavadhu Bus pidithhu, Virugambakkam stop il irangi - angirundhu oru 200 yards reverse direction il nadandhaal oru 'pala pala' vellai nira Apartment il " ANUDH AUDIO CENTRE " theriyum - this is also a good place - but this place has no LPs -only CDs. But still a good collection.
3.From Ashok Pillar, if you take a bus towards Mambalam, get down immediately at the next stop after Ashok Pillar - you will see the board of Kerala Jewellery - go further down and on your left will be a mini shopping enclosure with a cycle kaathhu adikkum facility in front - in this enclosure, you will see a TV/AUDIO Repair centre - actually, this is an excellent recording centre - these guys have an unbelievable collection of IR - who knows you might even end up getting IR's much sought after "EERA VIZHI KAAVIYANGAL" here.
4. If reaching these places is difficult, then try RAGAVENDRA MUSICALS at Mambalam, Station Road - this place also has a good collection of IR's and Tamil albums in general.
Wish you luck for your recording endeavors.

prakash the shop i was refering u is the no 3 on madhan's list. the shop's name is Goodies.
Infact AUDIO POINT has a good collection but the "BIGGEST " problem with that guy his
1. he takes his own time
2. he *never* records in the order u ask him to.
if these two are not a criteria for u then u can consider him too.
btw, dai madhan nee engada ozhunjukittu irukkae.....

Madhan avargaley,
Mikka nanri. Naan makizhchi adainthen. I will surely try those shops that you have mentioned.
Muthax:
thanks for those comments about Audio Point. I have not tried that shop. I used to go to this guy on Usman Road near the junction of Ranganathan street and S. Usman Road. He did some good recordings for me, but same problem as Audio Point.
Ravi:

Ravi:
Would it be possible for you to split up the archive ? As Prakash says it is very large and is prone to discourage anyone from looking for older articles. TIA.
