I know IR has used Trumpets and Sax in some songs just as a follow instrument.
Examples:
1.Appapa Thithikum undhan from "Jappanil kalyanaraman"
2.Ada Machan Machan from "Chinna Veedu"
3.Mandram Vantha from "Mouna Raagam"
4. Vaanam Enna Kizh irukku from "Vetri Vizha"
These are classical Trumpets or Sax pieces.
Please give your ideas about any other songs.
Of course Kadri's Sax from Anjali (that got ARR's name)
Thanks
Veera Akkoor

MSV has used a sax interlude which blends well in the song:
Engirindho Aasaigal, Ennathile Oosaigal, - TMS & PS from Chandrodhayam.

Namma ooru singari from Ninaithale Inikkum had good trumpet pieces esp. towards the end of the song.

Hello folks,
The Sax piece is played by a different artiste not Kadri as published. Kadri played only few pieces in the movie. I will tell the name in further discussions. ARR playing Sax? All he knows in Keyboard and nothing. He had his initial tutelage of music under the MAESTRO, do not forget that sir.Raaja is a genius in all fields.
I personally do not want this to be a thread comparing the Maestro with any person. I think all of us agree that he is a Genius irrespective of whether he play Sax or not.
Thanks

Veera,
To me, no indian film had used sax as well as the film Duet. Hats off to ARR.

Raja's trumpet!...Stars in the sky cannot be counted...
I just love the trumpet counter point in Majam vandha thendraluku...in mouna ragam.

Guys, Add "Nila adhu vanathu maele" in the 'trumpet' list.

One of the earliest instances of Sax usage by IR, that comes to my memory is in the song "Ninaivo oru paravai" (Sigappu rojakkal). The amazing piece comes in the first interlude music after an equally amazing guitar piece. The picturization shows Kamal and Sridevi taking off on a chariot, and the sax piece sounds absolutely dramatic !
Another beautiful instance is in the song "Vanam keezhe vandhal enna" from Thoongadhe thambi thoongadhe". The song is a 3-stanza number, each stanza having elaborate violin pieces interlaced with sax. Hmmm... absolutely super !
ARR fans, don't frown at me - needless to say, I have also enjoyed the beautiful pieces in "Duet", and did'nt mention it here, as it has already got the mention it deserves, in this thread.

Whenever Sax is mentioned in film songs, Duet will be the first film which will come to mind. Duet just towers above all other sax work in film music and it is a fact.

Of course, Kadri's kalyaaNavasantham piece in Duet is a class of its own! Apart from the carnatic pieces in the movie the other Sax like interludes in the songs etc have been played by somone else in Duet. Anyone know the name of this person? (I remember that it was in the cassette, but I dont have the cassette right now!)

ARR made a very wise decision using Kadri for Duet. I have always maintained that he is a very good marketing person ;-)
April Mayile is another good example of sax+trumpet usage from IR.
Veera:
Appappa thiththikkum was another VERY popular culturals song. The Loyola guys perfected this number along with 'Vaanam Keezhe Vandhaal Yenna'. Ada Macham Ulla Machan is another fantastic song. Some of IR's best sax and trumpet numbers were lost in innumerable re-recordings. Listen to (as opposed to watch !) those fight sequences in older movies from then 80s. IR has used the trumpet so variedly along with the drums that other MDs cannot even contemplate these numbers.

One more to the trumpet list is the second interlude in "Inniya malargal" from "Poonthotam".

And Anand M: it is not the second interlude, but the first one from "Iniya Malargal". Brilliant. BTW, you were supposed to meet with us after your wife left. If you can not make it, please let me know.

Looks like lot of people have confusion with sounds of saxophone and trumpet. Let us just call it brass wind instruments.

If I think of trumpets the songs that come instantly to my mind are
1. Germaniyin Senthen malare - Ullasa Paravaigal
2. Vaanam Keezhe vandhaal enna - Thoongadhe thambi thoongadhe
As Srinath said its a pretty popular song in those intercollege competitions. I like the trumpets from the opening piece of the song. Its just wonderful and I somehow feel that the way SPB starts the song seems to be a very smooth transition. The first also has some good trumpets in the song. If Iam right I have a faint opinion that IR or MSV have used the trumpets to almost all songs that have been shot abroad. I may be wrong though

Sorry guys I missed to add this song which is also a pretty popular song in culturals. I think the IIT-M gys and the Loyola guys used this song.
PonMaanai thedudhe - Oh! Maane Maane the song Kamal had sung for Mohan

Chandramouli:
Nooooo ! That was OUR song ! CEG, Guindy ! WE were best known for playing that song (Pon Maane Thedudhe) on stage ! Andha songavachchu naanga win pannada culturalsey kidayaadhu ! (btw, I am not an Anna Univ. alumni, I only used to play for them, thiruttuthanama ;-))). I remember that song so vividly ! We created our own parts for that song ! And we had two female singers singing 'seconds' and 'thirds' along with the male singer ! Sure-fire way to win any culturals ! The effect was simply great on stage (aurally too, not only visually ;-))). Of course, all this was in the '94 to '96 period. It 'may' be that Loyola and IIT-M used this before, though I doubt it as each college had it's own fixed list of songs.
"Oh! ho Megham Vandado" from Mounsa Raagam has some very good trumpet pieces, though nothing exceptional by IR's standards.
Sridhar:
I believe there are several types of saxes, each producing a sound only slightly different from the other. Moreover, at higher pitches it is pretty difficult to differentiate between a sax and a trumpet using an ordinary walkman or 2-in-1. I just assume that the softer, richer tones belong to the sax and the harsher, thinner ones to the trumpet. In a lot of places they are actually used together as they complement each other quite well. Perhaps somebody can actually explain the differences here.

Hi
Srinath:
Have to played the trumpet piece in Engeyoum epodhum, unakena mela nindrai, enbame in idyakani, atho antha parvai pole, partha nayabaam illaiyo, yadum ure yavarum keler...
Msv has done many excellent trumpet scores..
I have a opinion here- msv trumpet scores are more complicated than Raja's., Raja scores is more of a brass section arrangement.
