Dear fans,
It is some time since we really got into seeing more into songs of IR rather than compare him with ARR and so on. Have you ever noticed that all Hits of IR has that chorus ( a group of 10-15 girls) at the BG, humming some great melodies in the songs and in the process adding value to the song. I just can tell you only this- there are less of IR's songs WITHOUT chorus. Plz. post your comments.
For a start, let me give a list of 4 great songs with chorus..
1. Vaa vennilaa--mella thirandhadhu kadhavu
2. Oru naalum unnai -- ejamaan
3. adi aathaadi -- kadalora kavithaigal
4. Chinna chinna vannakkuyi-- Mouna Ragam ( the sensational.. ummmmmm, ummmmm)
Bye,
Sharma.

Hi
Frankly :Male Chrous voices in Ir songs are often out of tune. Male chorus section is very poor.
but the Female section is very good.

somehow, i never get tired of listing IR songs. a few gems:
1. devathai poloru- gopura vaasalile
2. adi ye raasathi - ennuyir thozhan
3. one of the recent best - chorus in 'aruna girana' song in guru.
4. chinna chinna - mouna raagam - brilliant!
5. pani vizhum - mouna raagam
6. idhu oru nilaak kaalam- tik tik tik - opening chorus is amazing! i never get tired even after listening to this song a 1000 times!
7. madai thiranthu - nizhalgal
8. mannava mannava - walter wetrivel - what a chorus! the chorus matches exactly the situation
and it reaches a crescendo giving a tremendous impact! the picturisation is apt whith blind sukanya turning around in slow motion!
9. en iniya pon nilaave - moodupani - mesmerizing!
10. bhoopalam- thooral ninnu pochu - brilliant chorus at the start of the song. i think the song is set in gowri manohari scale.

1. Paaramal paartha nenjam - Poonthotta Kavalkaaran has amazing chorus and orchestration.
2.Vaanengum thanga ven meengal -- Moodraam pirai
But the beauty of chorus in IR songs is that they blend with the song so beautifully, that unless u are very observant , u'll not realise that it's presence.

Some of the best chorus ever (IMO) were for the interludes of:
1. Sundari - Dalapathi
2. O Priya Priya - Gitanjali
3. Vande mataram - Kaalapani
4. Vandhal vandhal raajakumari - Oru oorile oru raajakumari.
5. There is also a song in "Mayabazaar 95" that is colored only by chorus. I don't remember the lyrics, but its a great song.
6. There is a similar song(colored with chorus from beginning to end) in the Kannada movie "Shivasainya".

1. Sundari Neeyum Sundaran...Kamal, SJ
Raja thought that introducing chorus bring flavour to the song. In fact, it did and made the song to be a hit one. Kamal Hasan told this in an interview.
Enjodi Manjal Kuruvi...SPB,Chitra,SPS Vikram I don't like this song that much.
Etho Mogam Vandhatho...SJ Punnagai Mannan

My favourites,
1. Thamthana Thamthana (though Jency and Sasirekha sang out of tune, the composition was masterly)
2.Devadai pol oru penningu
3.Kannukkulle Yaaro (I hope you can add this to the 'chorus' list)

Hey guys,
The response to this section has been superb, thanks for the same. Anyway, it cannot be denied that not only the song, but also the whole movie's story base is depicted in the chorus usage by IR in his songs. You can notice that the chorus is so apt that the feelings, mood and the weightage of the situation is well brought out by the song and the chorus.
AND IT IS A FACT THAT NONE OTHER THAN THE MAESTRO IS CAPABLE OF DOING THIS. Probably, ARR needs to learn a lesson or two form IR.
Sharma.

IR's influence on Karthik Raja shows in the melodious song in the film 'Ullasam': "Veesum Kartukku"... The chorus "yaaraval Yaaraval" apparently by a bunch of PS Senior Secondary School girls has been very well rendered, with a scale-change in between... amazing stuff. It did sound like an IR composition.

IMO, chorus in some of the songs has spoilt the song. One such is Oru paTTAm poochi from KM (sorry suresh ;-)) ).
another song with great chorus is "mannan koorai chelai" from kAlApAni. The "huyya huyya" part is terrific.
There is one more song in vanaja girija with great chorus.CAn anybody help me out???

ARR's use of female voices in 'putham bhoomi vENdum' in thirudA thirudA is just stunning. rAjA has never tried this type of chorus in any of his songs. Surprising that rAjA is the classically oriented one but never tried such western opera type chorus !

PG
IR chorus and vocal interludes are more difficult and totally folk material and never else attempted in this woruldu. We are in India, not in Italy to ask for opera type chorus. ARR is comfortable doing what IR has not done before, so he is going places and bringing in outside cultures and doing it in such a way that they appear non-Indian and not done before, when actually ARR simply cuts from Italy and pastes in India!!! There is a limit.

Pg,
Even I was mesmerised by the stunnin' chorus in the song that u mentioned. I was so carried away that I was thinking that it would not be long before RPH came to ARR requesting him to compose a Symphony! :-)))
Well, time told me otherwise. ARR has never used that kind of chorus again. Surprising isn't it? , esp. considering the fact that Thiruda^2 songs were so widely appreciated (Even people in Mumbai bought the Tamil versions of the Casette!!)
I wouldn't at all be surprised if ARR in fact QUOTED some classical chorus piece for this particular song! :-)))

Thiruda Thiruda's dubbed version Chor Chor received extemely bad reviews in Hindi Press. TOI (or was it Filmfare ?) trashed the songs. That really shows the music knowledge of those northie reviewers.
I am as big an ARR-basher as any but till somebody proves me otherwise the benefit of the doubt goes to ARR. It is not easy to cut & paste such a chorus into a tamil song.
