I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Sim (or whatever your name is)
Let us be clear here that Saravanan is NOT writing a critique of Vani's repertoire. It is meant to be a documentation of every single song she ever recorded for Tamil films (am I right?). With his style of writing, Saravanan not only describes the singer (Vani, in this case) but also the MD. lyricist and the actors/actresses and any other pertinent historic detail regarding this song. At times, he might venture into critical aspects of the song that, in his opinion, no other singer could have performed as well. That is "his" opinion at the very least and nothing to fret about. Now you tell me if you need a balanced report for a documentation like this.
Elevating one's own idol in the world's eyes just by putting down someone else's is not going to do you or anyone any good.
Remember, any more malicious postings such as the one above will probably be (should be, I think) ignored. I'm sure Saravanan is doing his job just fine. Let's worry about Vani's minuses and plusses all put together in some critical analysis of her repertoire.

Kaumudi, thanks :)
Prabhu, the conversation was partly in English and partly in Tamil. "ji" was perhaps the only Hindi word used ;)

Saravanan,
Thoroughly enjoying your write-ups. Great detail delivered in your characteristic style. I'm saving all the parts like a squirrel hoarding for winter. Keep writing!

Kaumudi/Saravanan -
This thread has become a touchstone for refined, committed and appreciative exchanges about a "single" artiste at this portal. I am more than certain that there are many silent visitors to this thread, and that contingent could only have grown since exponentially since Saravanan started his VJ chronology. So what if the tenor of the posts occasionally slides into hagiography and nascent "wow"ism? After all, it is neither undeserving nor untrue. That's the reason behind this "sim"ple resentment, which every so often raises its ugly (and old) head.
May I direct those who seek "balanced" and "objective" discussions about TFM personalities to the too-many-to-count IR, ARR, Super-this and Sori-that threads? Obviously, we're not doing enough to quell the "neutral" cravings of some, and since that's unlikely to change, why not skip this and settle elsewhere? (FYI, there is a new thread which was inaugurated the other day titled "Where is your objectivity" - now wouldn't that be a good place to park your "sim"mmerings? Just a thought.)
(Aside: Saravanan, not that you have to do it time and again, but just occasionally, would you just let it rip and bore into these vaiyiththerichchal girakkis? Let me know in advance, and I'll scalp tickets! :-)

Still I think sometimes it goes a bit too far, to be almost a mock epic.

Who the hell cares what you think?
You've contributed to this thread (with your name of the moment)only to slander or demote the artiste being discussed/honoured. Neither is your negativity supported by reference or specificity. That's rule number one of "critical" practice, and we're to fall on our knees and adhere to your high priest farmans?
Contribute constructively to this thread if you want to, or else take your invisible (yet perfectly balanced) wares to some other hapless community. We are not buying.
The only mock epic around here is your ability to reincarnate yourself many times - and all avatars in that same shade of bitter green.

Meeting Greatness- Part 7:
The conversation drifted to IR. “I have not sung many songs for IR, somehow--” V said matter-of-factly. But before we could ponder over that statement with regret, she continued cheerfully, “However, most of the songs that I sang for him, both in Tamil and in Telugu, became immensely popular.” She went on to list some of her favorite songs like Orey naal, Naane naana, Nitham nitham nelluchoru and En ullil engo yengum geetham.
About Vijayabhaskar “Oh, he was a great MD and a wonderful human being. Though he was a Tamil, he could not make it big here, but in Kannada, he was a prolific composer. He has given me many excellent songs in Kannada. And even in the few Tamil films that he composed music for, I had some memorable numbers. He liked my voice very much.” she recalled nostalgically.
About ARR “I’ve know him since he was a small boy!” she smiled. “I enjoyed singing the Vandicholai Chinrasu song. I sang it separately, and SPB sang it separately. Later listening to the final version, I was struck by the imaginative arrangements. Whenever I happen to meet ARR nowadays, he says “Aunty, I am not making the kind of music that would be appropriate for you” V said candidly.
There was a pause, as we were ruminating on that statement--
Suresh mentioned the ‘Sangeetha Sagaram’ programme (Asianet), in which the VJ episodes were of particular delight. V eyes lit up as she spoke about the programme.
“Those youngsters who were playing the instruments were amazed when I corrected them at times- they were wondering how, after so many years, I was still able to recall every bit of the interludes!” she chuckled. “ I got many calls in appreciation- and everyone asked the same question- “Your voice is still so good, why aren’t you singing in films?’” I wish I knew the answer”- she said, still with the heart warming smile.
But-- this time her smile was not infectious—Suresh and I sighed, as we exchanged glances, as we knew that this was one question that we all have always wondered on, so many times--
And as a soothing salve to drive away the depression that suddenly threatened to engulf us, VJ enthralled us with ‘Nayaka—paalaka—manuja sneha gayaka’’ her famous song from the Malayalam film Lakshmi Vijayam, which she sang in one of the Sangeetha Sagaram episodes. She recalled how she explained to the instrumentalist that ‘nayaka’ and ‘palaka’ had to followed by exactly four pulls of the string, and how it would sound substantially different even if it were to be 3 or 5!
I then asked her about the immortal ‘Dhun thana thana chilangae’ (a wonderful Salil Chowdhry composition from St. Thomas). V recalled with alacrity every detail of the day, some 25 years back, when that song was recorded—right from the exact floor of Mehboob Studios (Bombay) till the names of the instrumentalists who played that day!
And—then she sang—and oh how she sang! There was magic in the air as V closed her eyes and began with ‘Dhun thana thana chilangae, dhun thana thana ninde ninde thaalam’. We listened awestruck, as the song gathered speed; and as though driven by some invisible force, she raced along—
We were to realise that this was just the beginning, for V soon had us dazed, as she sang from memory the ENTIRE interlude--she brought to pulsating life the notes of each instrument in the interlude, and without pausing for breath, commenced adroitly with the charanam--
And she beamed at us serenely immediately after that remarkable display of artistry, but we took a longer time to come out of our trance—

Saravanan -
Another amazing instalment! Thanks for the atmospherics, minutiae and enthralling moments of your meeting...god and VJ are in the details? :-) (and so is your write-up. Now, don't let the chronology languish....)
I have been searching high and low for the Dhun Thana Thana song. Now, I hope you can provide it (or you shouldn't talk it up so much!! :-)
Where's Suresh? And when is his version going to hit these pages? Hope he pipes up soon!

Naaz, sorry I too have been looking high(er) and low(er) for Dhun thana thana song - no luck so far :-(
However I've heard it twice though, once in 'Sangeetha Sagaram' and once in VJ's griham!

Saravanan, excellent once again. As for VJ singing for IR - I am listening to Gharshana(Telugu Agni Natchathiram). VJ has sung both the songs that SJ sang in tamil. Wonder why IR didnt choose her to render any of the tamil songs but would pick her for the telugu version.Puzzling.

The song "Dhoom dhoom tana..." has been mentioned on the Salilda website, but that's about all. This website previously had links to several rare songs, but not any more. I am only too curious to listen to this song, now that you have described it!
And since I am an out-and-out Salilda fan, I must add that his compositions sound totally unique and so very "refreshing". He has produced excellent results with almost every singer he worked with. And that's quite an achievement considering the fact that he has worked with a very wide range of singers.
I have heard almost all the songs that Vani Jairam sang for him, except this one. The others are quite a delight in themselves - Kannil Poovu and Naadanpaattile... being two really pleasant solos. I have also heard a very beautiful Vani Jairam-Jolly Abraham duet in the Malayalam film "Aparadhi", composed by Salilda.

Interestingly, the Salilda site has a very good system of cross-referencing, i.e. links to the same tune used in different languages. It turns out that "dhoom dhoom tanana.." has a Bengali version by his wife Sabita, in the film Jibono Rekham:
