There are some songs, after listening to which, we would have felt like,"the song should have been composed for some more duration"(ex.Kanmani Anbodu in Gunaa). Please come out with such songs, folks!

Aravind:
In Mahanadhi, there are three songs with the same tune. And all of them are short. The starting words in the songs are :
1)Oru koondai vittoru kuruvi koottam - SPB version
2) Thai pongalum vandhadhu palum pongudhu - Female version(I do not know who has sung this song. Any one ?)
3) EngeyO therku dhesai kanadha dhooram dhaan - Kamal's version (The song starts with a Bengali verse)
The tune is very haunting and all of three songs are picturised in the movie. The last song is picturised as follows: Kamal is in prison and his teenage daughter is abducted by the villian and she is sent to Sona Kachi(Red light) area in Calcutta. Kamal comes out of the jail in seek of his daughter and finds her in Calcutta. That is when the song no.3 is picturised in the movie. The movie, the songs and Kamal's great acting in Mahanadhi still haunts me.

I had indeed posted this query with these songs in mind. Vizhiyil Vizhunthu, is so haunting that it should have continued for another stanza as well. Regarding Poovile Medai, I see no reason why it shouldn't have continued for the next stanza. Particularly Jayachandran's voice with a piano music coming from the BG, made everyone hum that song.

'paLLikkUdam pOgaamalE' was not a song. It was actually done during re-recording. It was not in the casette when it was released. During RR, IR had to do somE BGM for the scene where Sathraj is standing on one leg. He immediately came up with this song insitu.
Bhaarathiraaja once marvelled how the song fit into the scene. During the words 'Dass Dass', Rekha face was shown in the close-up. This synchronised with the scene 3-4 times. Raja the great. Sorry for digressing.

SJanaki has "screeched" in many songs, and this has been agreed by many in different threads. IMHO (for what it is worth) SJanaki has not done justice to this song. The beginning music, interludes, tune and lyrics are great - what spoils the song is SJanaki's rendition. Nothing - I repeat - Nothing is going to change my opinion of that.
As to Oh Vennilla, I respect your views. I believe, however, it is not neccessarily universal! Whilst you spit venom, let millions of others enjoy the song!

The SJ song NOV mentions is from thEvathai. It is a tremendous song. Great orchestrisation. But he is true in one aspect that SJ has screech and slowly her age is also showing up. I heard that she is older than PS. Is that true?
All said and done, there is no replacement for SJ. This is MUO (my unshakeable opinion - asaikka mudiyaatha abippiraayam)
So there is no wonder that we have a common choice of SJ songs too.

Sunil - Ottu-moththama SJ is no good endru naa sollaleh. My reference was only in relation to that particular song. So, manaseh alai paaya vittudaatheenga. S. Janaki is certainly a top class singer (along with P. Suseela & Chitra) Now if you were talking about LR Eswari, then ...........
A little bit of digression: I agree with Aravind that sometimes age seems to be catching up with singers such as SJ and PS. But how is it Jikki and JR can still sound young? ON SJ, I happened to watch VIP on vdo yesterday and in one of the adverts, they showed a bit on SJ's show in someplace. Do you know another novel aspect of 'oru naaL antha oru naaL'? The lyrics actually echoes the feelings of Naazar who is in 'aavi' form. But the song is sung by the heroine (Keerthi). So SJ has given a different modification to her voice to sound different. This made her voice sound a bit strange and a bit aged.
I have no doubts that it a grrrrrrrreat song. Especially the humming by the chorus 'maRanthu pOgumaa, maRanthu pOgumaa' after Sj sings those words in the pallavi - Vow

The BGM was extraordinary. The historic period and contemporary periods were distinguished marvellously. But unfortunately, the audio system in the theatre ( Theatre Singapura, Singapore) was very bad.
Moreover, I was very much particular in waiting for the title music after the movie as AV had special mentions to it. But the useless projector operator, stopped screening the titles as soon as they appeared. rasanai!!

For practical purposes, it is not a duet. But on paper, it is. IR sings only the first few words in the song. He starts
oru naaL antha oru naaL - unnai

athu maRanthu pOgumaa
and continues for the rest of the song. IR does not sing after that.

I saw Devadhai on Video (NJ). The print was good. The BGM is great but the movie while better than average Tamil movie is not all that good. I had great expectations from Nasser after Avathaaram. But do not underestimate it. Within budget constraints he has done a decent job. The plot is thin, the costumes etc are influenced by Conan-the-Barbarian type of movies and the climax uses special effects which are no match for an average Hollywood movie. Aravind,
What you said is true. IR cannot be blamed for the movie to be a hit or flop. Some of his best tunes are in his flop movies.
But my personal opinion is - his success got him over his head. He literally fought with everyone in the industry. In one of his interviews he tells - music directors are cheaters. They cheat the public just combinations of just 7 swaras. A better cheater is more successful. He goes on to take a dig at other carnatic musicians and tells that he finds no difference between their rendition and the bark of a dog.
This interview is on the net and not sure if anyone of you had a chance to read it. enna irunthalum, avar appdi solliyirukka koodathu endru thaan en thazhmayana opinion.

Sunil:
I also read the Interview you have mentioned. IR did say that there is also music in the barking of a dog and not as you have written. And as we all know, there are only 7 swaras in carnatic music. But there are a galaxy of tunes that are produced with these 7 swaras. IR is not a cheater but churns nice tunes with the usage of 7 swaras only. Probably he tried to say that music is no big deal for him and we all know how great his music is and it is not very easy to compose tunes like that. And yes I agree he was heady and did not budge to anyone's orders or tantrums.
Here is an incident which I wish to quote about IR's eccentricity:
Once IR and Rajni were both on the stage on some occasion and Rajni was asked to talk: It seems Rajni said that "naanga veyilla adi Odi kashtapattu nadikarOm , aana music podaravanga neengallam ACyile jaaliya ukkandhu paattu pottutu nalla pEr vangi kondi pogireergal" endru sonnavudanE IR medaiyai vittu keeLey irangi vidavum, Rajni has requested him to stay. Then after much requests he talked and said that they are also struggling 24 hours a day to provide good music He also wanted an apology from Rajni, which I do not know if he got. IMO, I feel that IR is a very straight forward man. He has come up in life after so many struggles. He still does not forget his roots and always remains aloof from the media world. Don't you think his attire and his way of life is not desired by anyone? It is not easy for anyone to be like that in the limelight. It is known that people(especially in the film industry) who have been successful in their business life have failed miserably in their personal lives. IR is a man who has lead his career and personal life successfully and he has gained respect in both the areas. What more do we expect from a man ? So, even though he is a man with eccentrities he has been the kind of an ideal personality for lots of people. Many people in the lot rungs have appreciated him for his spiritual life and the way he has lead his life successfully.

CP: neenga sonna incident Anjali padaththin 100-Avathu naaL vizhaala nadanthathunnu ninaikkirEn. The incident didn't quiter unfold as you have described it. After Rajini said that, IR spoke and he said - 'Do you know that I never use the AC. Even if it is running I have it stopped when I enter the room. If you think it is easy to produce music, why don't you try it. I will even give you control of my orchestra.' Later when Karunanidhi (the then CM) spoke he said - '(What is all this).. Rajini music pOtta yaar kEtpathu? IR nadichchA yaar paarppathu? Rajini RajiniyaagavE irukkattum, Raaja raajavaagavE irukkattum.' This apparently broke the tension. Though there were rumours that Rajini and IR broke up after that, we all know that IR scored music for Rajini after that - atleast veerA.

The explanation given by Ravi, with regards to the IR-Rajini episode is 100% correct. Even I read about this in Junior Vikatan, I think.
Let me give another interesting incident to show that IR is a straight forward person, and holds self-respect top on his agenda. This happened on the Pooja for Neenga NallA Irukannum, produced by the Govt. of Tamilnadu, when Jayalalitha was the CM.Actually Isaignani Ilayaraaja was signed for composing the music. The function (pooja) was held at Prasad Recording Laboratory (PRL),which is IR's second home.On that day, when IR came to attend the function, he wanted to park his car in his usual place. However, when the security personnel refused permission, saying that they had specific orders not to allow anyone park his car near that of the CM's car, IR grew wild and told them, that they have no business to dictate his parking lot, that too in his own work place. Saying this, he drove off. When JJ came to know of this, she grew wild, and only then MSV was asked to compose the music. I read about this, again in Junior Vikatan, I think.
Please compare his action against that of Deva and ARR, who had the taste of Enforcement Directorate's grilling, for having associated themselves with JJ.

ago. the first time i heard it i didn't like it. most of the orchestration
is done on key-board, and sounded too noisy. the second time broke the
ice. at least nURu thadavai kEttiRuppEn. i vividly
remember singing
the song in my mind when I was asleep (oxymoronic?). no comparison.

hi,
forget all these guys.IR has risen from the state of a street singer to that of a composer for the royal orchestra thru sheer hard work and dedication.all his eccentricities and ego etc. can be easily pardoned keeping this in mind.he is not only a role model for music directors but for any aspiring human in any walk of life.a country bumpkin with a harmonium on his head and roaming about with his brothers in the vilage streets coming up to thgis level is too incredible to be even a film story.i guess someone can make a film on this.

P. Raja :
Yes, Sandana Katre is such a beautiful song that you want to listen to it ever and ever. Also, 'Rasave Unna Naan Ennithan'.
I have often continued listening to Panneer Pushpangal songs non-stop. Especially, "Ananda Raagam".
