Hi!
I just want to know if any music directors have a fad for a particular Ragam. The one MD who comes to my mind is ARR who uses Kapi,Ananda Bhairavi,Shankarabharanam and the like in almost all his films.

IR appears to use the following very often :
Keeravani
Madhyamavathi
Kalyani
Mohanam
Natabairavi (Scale)
Gowrimanohari
Sindhubairavi
Mayamalawagowlai
Dharmavathy
Simhendra Madhyamam
Charukesi
Refer to my homepage for some of the umpteen Keeravanis he has tuned.

ramaswamy,
i think max no. of songs are in mohanam, madhyamavathi and keeravani.gowrimanohari, dharmavathi, etc. only a few songs.
as srirangam lakshminarayanan says in one of his articles, raja is a mohanapriyan.so many melodious nos. in mohanam. mohanam is an easy raga to tune in TFM i guess.the raga itself is so melodious that irrespective of whoever tunes a song in mohanam it is always pleasant to hear.

Vijay,
Mohanam is one of the ragas that I dont like. Though a simple pentatonic raga, I dump it into the lot of gana ragas like Todi, Bairavi etc. which are also ragas that I cant relish much. There are very few tfm songs set to Mohanam - 'sri ranga ranga', 'ABC nee vaasi', 'ninnu kori' etc. - that I enjoy inspite of their being set to Mohanam. But again, I dont like 'kaNmaNiyE kAdhal enbadhu' etc.
But a small tonal shift gives madhyamavathi, which I love. Dont ask me why, I think that is bound to remain one of the unsolved mysteries in my life :-)
Actually mottai has tuned quite a number of songs set to gowri manohari scale, dharmavathy scale, and also to derivatives of those ragas.

I have noticed that MSV used probably hari kambhoji, karaharapriya , natabhairavi , hanumathodi very often maybe at times without the actual character of the raaga brought out. Occassionally he has used Gowri Manohari (Malare kurinji, Gowri manohariyai). He used Hamir kalyani,Behaag, sindhu bhairavi and kalyani extremely well. He has tuned (This maybe V.kumar) one song in Rasika Priya(72nd Mela) "Oru naal iravu" in "Kaviyathalaivi" , a truly brilliant song.
IR had some affinity towards Mayamaalava gowla , Keeravani during the late 80s early 90s period.Initially he was called as Mohana raaja as 90% of his songs were set to Mohanam. He probably has covered more raagas than any of his predecessors (even rarely used raagas like reethi gowla, chandra kouns etc)

Hi Ramaswamy Gireesan,
I enjoyed listening to your tasteful collection of film music(especially the ones composed by MSV and the often forgotten Vkumar).
Coming to your observation that you donot like Moahanam is pretty surprising, because this ,as you must already be knowing,is a raga which can bring out all the navarasas if properly sung.
The uchasthaayi sanchara of this raga ,in my opinion , can elevate the listener to a higher plane.
As for sriram lakshman's observation(I donot know if he meant to criticise) that MSV composed songs in ragas without actually bringing out the raga's character,I think the true ability of a music director lies in bringing out different facets of ragas rather than stuffing the lyrics into a typical raga frame.I would like to point out that Viswanathan didnot score too many songs in Hindholam ,but can one believe that "NAMMA OORU SINGARI' is based on the soft and romantic raga hindolam?
But look at "Om namasivaya" by Raja in salangai oli.It is nothing but a typical hindolam piece with music-unfriendly and shallow lyrics.

Hi Srini,
I did not mean to criticize MSV , that was only an observation. In fact, kudos to MSV for being absolutely original, that is his greatness, he belongs to no specific school of thought. As for his usage of Hindolam, in Karnan, Seergazhi starts of in Hindolam only (Mazhai kodukkum kodaiyum oru).

Hi,
Msv's hot favorite is Thilang,
Many of his interludes, re-recorinding pieces end are in Thilang.
Besides MSV has used various ragas - gowri manohari,Dwjawanthi,Hamir Kalyani, Dharmavathi, Charukesi, one of his best Abhogi in the song vanakam palamurai sonen, Kharaharapriya - he used this raga in a real light music way
"I will sing for you" in Manitharul Mannikam - a western and carnatic score.

The best score by MSV in abhogi was in "Kalaikkovil" thanga ratham vanthathu by BalaMurali and P.Susheela. He has used Natabhairavi also well....Mayakkama Kalakkaama ,Ninaikka therintha Maname, Yaar sirithaal Enna
(all sad songs) and Vasanthathil Ore Naal Manavarai ( a positive song).

srini,
i do not think u have listened much to IR's music. here are some of IR's classics n hindolam.they are much better than MSV's or anyone else's compositions in hindolam.
1. sridevi en vaazhvil- a classic by yesudoss from ilamaikolam.
2. naan thedum -IR -dharmapathini.
3. paadavanthathor - ilamai kaalangal
4. thendral thaan - a breezy number by yesudoss and co. from keladi kanmani.
5. en veetu jannal - raman abdullah
ramaswamy , look at IR's classics in mohanam
1. geetham sangeetham - SPB -kokarakko
2. vaan pole vannam kondu - salangai oli
3. vandade kungumam - kizhakku vaasal, one of the best by chithra.
4. nilavu thhongum neram - kunguma chimizh
5. ku ku koo - valli - latha rajnikanth
6. vel muruganukku mottai - malaysia vasudevan
7. naan oru ponnoviyam - kannil theriyum kathaigal, spb jency
8. kaanan oru kaikuzhandai - badrakaali - SPB, PS
9. kasthuri maane - pudumai penn- KJ, uma ramanan
10. paadu nilaave - udhaya geetham -SJ
and countless more....
as srini rightly said, mohanam has the ability to elevate the listener to another plane. even our deva? had 'priya oh priya' in mohanam from kattabomman. this was a hit.
i do not bither whether the raga is a gana raga or pentatonic or not. if the song impresses me i like it, simple.
and all of raja's songs in mohanam have impressed me and most of them were hits.

Hi,
I thought Kattabomman music was by LP. Also, Vellarikka, pinju vellarikka in Kadhal Kottai is set to Mohanam

vijay,
I do agree that ilayaraja has composed good songs with hindolam. But some, not all, of his songs intended to be classical pieces turn out to be
'IMPURE'.I know I am going to be blasted by scores of diehard IR fans.
I wouldlike to substantiate my point by taking up the very first song in your list.
'Sree devi envazvil' is not pure hindolam. The
later part of charanam ,from "Ingay unai kanden.."
is in kalyana vasantham.
As for your observation on 'PRIYA',YES.You are right.Deva composed it great, although ,I think,
SPB should take the credit for making the song sound as good as it does.
more later

What about ARR!
I think his favourite one is Ananda Bairavi.
Like Mettu Podu from Duet,The starting music in kalloori salai from Kaathal Desam, & the one from Minsara Kanavu (Anbendra mazhayile...)
I think he is simply too good with his Ananda Bairavi tunes.

srini,
i agree that some of IR's songs are impure. but as he has said that he is not bound by any limits. for that matter TFM does not have any hardcore rules. u can mix and match.my point in listing out the songs was that IR has indeed touched hindolam in a big way and he has brought out a lot more variety than MSV.

ARR has also used maand a couple of times - the starting nadhaswaram in chinna chinna aasai and then one of the interludes in paarkkaathey paarkkAthey.

Vijay:
Hindolem :
Nambauru singari singapore vandalam :
it is set to hindolem : I consider this is has the greatest variety, using a classical raga for a 100% light music song.,
Rajas hindolems were mostly classical based except for unal mudiyum thambi song.

G.Ramanathan used Kalyani very well (Ullam rendum ondru, sinthanai sei maname), used Maand in an novel way (Ulavum thendral kaatrinile, pallavi & the first stanza of maasila nilave nam kaathalai),used Charukesi (Manmatha leelayai vendrar undo, vasantha mullai pole vanthu). Any fans of C.R. Subburaman, S.V. Venkataraman out there ?
