sv, Imho:
he planned it well, but he failed to execute it properly what ever!....kamal can do better. i was not impressed,
as far as movies goes technical aspects are very good and well thought out. but screen play is big sOthapal. this is the reason it failed badly.
take shanker, in indian or muthalvan he takes a very senstive subject with some "janaranjaga" elements. which heyram lacked.
People with DTS get the muthalvan DVD, it is really great to watch. Sound mixing is good.
I wish heyram dvd is comesout in real dts.
I have only a heyram vcd, in which i am forced to search for IR.
finally,
like bush...i am just waiting for the admin to put an end to this topic. :))

really :))
why should i get the vcd, i like "kamal's" movie, he really works hard, he never compromises like other directors and producers, he did not hesitate to swtich to IR when LS created some problems,
but still in heyram screen play.....nop..what do to , I did not find it interesting. Too long for a too small subject.

IMO,
HeyRam's story was quite interesting and had potential. The movie failed (I am not talking of its commercial failure) because of Kamal-the-director. With another director and writer, the movie could have come out much better. Kamal's story, screenplay efforts though decent have a mechanical, labored feel to them, something that is done through hard work rather than by flashes of brilliance. I felt the same with Mahanadhi.
Specific grouses with HeyRam,
* Kamal's ever changing appearance. Maybe he was trying to symbolically convey his ideological changes. Didn't work for me.
* Language -- Shahrukh & Atul K speaking in Tamil could have been avoided. Rani Mukherjee's Tamil was justified though, since she was his spouse.
* Romantic scenes -- Does a great job with Rani. The song (music + picturisation) is really neat but looks like not many appreciated it. Rani does a great job. Some of the bedroom scenes (as well as the graphics) with Vasundhara were unnecessary. Could have been under-played.
* Too many bigwigs with very little scope.
* Overall direction -- seemed disjointed (don't know if the censors had a role in this), trying to do too many things.
Does anyone really believe that HeyRam has any chance whatsoever at the Oscars? I don't.
Did Kushi get mentioned by mistake or was it truly sent to the selection committee? It wasn't even an average entertainer!

fan - i agree with u.
all the same, when we know (some of us acknowledge) that kamal is capable of better stuff... I do believe that for a project of this magnitude, he wouldnt have let the screenplay be so weak. He is a perfectionist, i dont think there is any doubt in that.
I heard the original uncensored movie lasted 4 hours, and several segments (apparently anti-Gandhi) were cut off, obviously affecting the flow. (Trend btw, censor -nnu sonna only porn stuff-a? I obviously meant the anti-gandhi stuff) So that has to be factored in when evaluating kamal's skill...
all the same, IMO, it remains that what the oscar committee sees is not upto the mark, to get nominated in a mainstream category... I wish music at least is...

Forget it guys...Hey!Ram is not even going to cross the first hurdle in terms of oscar. The only thing that needs to be seen, what kinda recognition IR (as if he needs it badly)gets out of this.
Srikanth...what do you mean when you say that you searched for IR ? B'cos i still remember one of ur earlier posts (in a different thread long back) that Hey!Ram score has got great range in it. Can i know what changed your opinion ? The BGM was excellent and it didn't spoil the flow of the movie IMHO.
PS: Even Kamal wouldn't have thought so much about this Oscar nomination. I honestly feel we have spent a wee bit too much of time in this.

HEY RAM was "selected" by the Film Federation of India to be sent for consideration for a "nomination" in the best forign film category at the Oscars. The only Indian Film ever to be "nominated" in this category was SALAAM BOMBAY, which did not win the Oscar that year.

Hey Ram is by far the best Indian movie that I have watched in a while. I have seen lots of recent Tamizh movies - none made me watch beyond half an hour.
Its a movie where everyone does sensible things - no melodrama whatsoever. There is melodrama in every other Tamizh movie that I watched - including Alaipayuthe (anyway, Mani has melodrama in every movie of his).
The contrast couldn't be more stark than with a movie like Housefull which was raved about here and by the critics - it was a pathetic movie, with an apology for direction.
Just look at the other Indian movies considered: Mohabatein - yet another tedious bore from the CHopras. I'm sure Mission Kashmir will also fall in that category.
I strongly disagree with those who say there was no story in Hey Ram. The story is very interesting: an ordinary man's point of view of partition. It is very well narrated as well. This guy Saket Ram was no saint. He did what anybody in his position might have done. And that is what the movie shows.
Direction: perfect. There are few movies that have been directed better. There is no discontinuity in the movie at any place. Graphics are used with telling effect (an excellent example is when Vasundhara Das morphs into a gun - one of my favourite scenes).
Screenplay: only part which was dragging was the beginning - the Ramaranalum song situation.

Observer,
I'am happy that atleast one person in this thread like you is talking sensibly.I strongly disagree with the point that Kamal is inexperienced. One thing I would like to make it
clear that Kamal plays a more significant part in
other fields apart from acting alone in all his
movies after the late 80's.
Technically speaking,Hey Ram is far superior to any other Indian movie shot till date.Everything was new in the movie.I think it deserved more awards than it actually recieved.
Also by this movie, it wasclear that if
at all a person can take Indian cinema through the
globe,it is Kamal alone and no one else. This point
was acknowledged by director shankar also after the preview show of Heyram.
Also Kamal had accepted that the song ramaranalum
was the only unwanted aspect of the film in the
BBC hardtalk.

screenplay was weak? What a joke! I thought screenplay was arguably the best from an Indian writer.
Am not sure wether folks in this forum know what a screenplay is?
I guess we should discuss this in a seperate forum

There was one scene in the flashback that had Kamal listening to Suprabatham (MS)LP. Me thinks, that LP was cut later than the 40's.

Last three releases of Kamal Kadhala kadhala, Hey Ram, Tenali....All these films had too much PRE RELEASE HYPE but after first week of release fell flat in collection...None of these films attracted any worthwhile attention in Tamilnadu...The only song that was popular in all the three films put together was Kasumele from KK...KR,IR,ARR,did not do any extra efforts to save these films...I feel Kamal's good PRO work and Gandhi subject has made the federation to Forward HR for the consideration of the NOMINATION...When Kamal is not living up to the HYPE he generates...What is there to talk about MDS..
Yes Latest Reports Confirm Tenali may not be a HIT

Re: screenplay. I understand that Kamal was following a particular style (attributed to some Hollywood pioneer). One page in the script has a screen time of 1 minute. IR mentioned that he has never seen a script like this done by anybody else in Tamil movie industry. He was referring to the meticulous work that had gone into the work. IMHO, Kamal is a very smart, hard working person and over these years he has accumulated enough experience and knowledge about movie-making as a whole. But I am with Comments (@ 172.172.180.120) when he/she says "Kamal's story, screenplay efforts though decent have a mechanical, labored feel to them, something that is done through hard work rather than by flashes of brilliance".
This can be said of other popular people too in the industry. That is why I have my favorites or biases :-) !!

Of late audiences are quite matured and any movie declared Good now a days become Hit....And Hey Ram was never projected as good film or art film...More than twenty crorers were spent on making of HR and before release Kamal maintained that HR is commercial film..That's Why I said about collections....Any way HR is a peculiar film and honestly I did not like it much...But if nominated it may get OSCAR also as very Specimen type movies like FOREST GUMP, AMERICAN BEAUTY impress the OSCAR voters.....ahmed ansari

Talking of screen plays , heyram is no where near the following...Avuai shanmugi,Vikram, vetri viza, MMKM, Mahanadhi, Guna, I really do not know what is great about the screen play in heyram, wasnt it dragging too much, kamal is capable of telling the same by clipping 30% of the movie, nothing would have changed, imho coordination between scenes were really poor,
The cast was big..with so many good artists, but they were not used properly.
How many of us would have watched the movie without kamal ?.
Hey ram the movie was a big hype, it was an ordinary movie, people identified it, went out of theaters in few days.
Few told me,
You need not be a so called "elite" class!...ya ya da ya da...s to under stand this 3+ hrs bore.
Less than 5% liked the movie, I am with the other 95% who did not like the movie.
