Satya,
"nee sonnaddhu ellam noorrukku nooru", if that means "great job" in Tamil!!
I am a big fan of Raja, (If you want proof, check my site at http://members.tripod.com/~telugu for Raja songs), and I am so happy to read what you wrote that, I read the discussion some hundred times until now. The information you gave is massive and so well put. I admire your knowledge and insight. We are lucky to have a music director like Raja and he is lucky to have a fan like you. Great job, anna.
thambi,
Sailesh.

To all people who claim Ilaya Raja has never copied and is an all time genius, one song - 'darling, darling'.

hey guys
I am a great fan of illaiyaraja , but there are songs in which he has taken tunes from foreign albums. But again considering that fact that 800 moviesla only around 50 movies have copied songs is nothing compared to other musicians who just surviveby copying.
so maestro is a genius and copy adikarthula thappuonnum illai, till it is within acceptable limits.

Am listening to oru chinnamaNikuyilu sindhu padikkudhadhi nenjukkuLLE nenjukkuLLE in
the movie kattap panjAyaththu. I think the music was done by Music (in GTRajan's nomenclature).
Was this a hit song? When was the movie released? I think IR murdered this song by using
bhavathAriNi (her voice is very very fresh
and has the teenage innocence but she
finds it difficult to stick to a shruthi.) What are the other songs in this movie and
how are they? This particular song is too good to go to the next one in contniuous play
mode in RealAudio.
Thanks in advance.

Mr.Rajagopalan,
Please don't make statements like Raaja copied without supporting or substantiating your statements - IT IS AN OPEN SLANDER AGAINST A GENIUS.

Masthana Masthana is NOT a copy. The tune/orchestration is original IR. What IS copied is the lousy 'isadE isadE mamitha ' words in the middle of the song. I don't know what made IR do it, this spoils the song.

The isadhe stuff in mastana song is a calypso theme you can find in Harry Belafonte's music.
However, the song itself is original. (The same applies to that SPB song uttalangiri from My Dear Marthanda, where the havanagila is once again from Belafonte)
There are however some tunes IR has copied:
1) chittu kuruvi.. (dhavani kanavugal?) is basically the theme of the 3rd movement of the New World Symphony by Dvorak
2) Indha pattilum... (murattu kalai?)sung by Janaki is a Spanish composition for guitar. I don't remember the composer.
3) the yaiyaiyaiya tune from En Bommukutti ammavukku is actually a little tune from an old Shirley Temple movie.
4) Kanavu kanum song from Neengal kettavai is a Kalyanji-Anandji song from one of those patriotic Manoj Kumar movies sung by Mukesh.
This said, let me add that even great composers like Mozart have from time to time gone back to older compositions and played around with them.
In modern days, Spielberg is not any the less movie maker just because he remade the (bad) movie Always.
The question always is what percentage of songs are lifted tunes? In IR's case it is probably of the order of 1 in a thousand.

There are cases, however, where IR's songs sound similar to each other. Examples are :
* Chinnan chiru kiliye (Mundhanai Mudichu) and Uyire uyirin oliye (En Bommukkutti...)
* Aadal kalaiye (Sri Raghavendrar) and Thoodhu selvadhaaradi (Singara Velan)
* Pottadhellam Vetri (Bharathan) and Pottu Vaitha Kaadhal Thittam (Singara Velan)
Of course, it is natural for this to happen when one needs to score in large numbers over a long period of time in quick succession...

PG : The 'isathe isathe mamitha' interlude was most probably
handled by Karthik Raja (I think he IS the person singing that verse too)
It was common during that time.. Another example is the interlude
in 'Pandiyanin Rajiyathil Hoya lala'.(KR mentioned this in an interview).
And about IR's originality, he NEVER copies or lifts.... very occasionally he HAS
taken small ideas/ inspirations from certain western songs. OFcourse being a hard-core FAN, I shall NOT mention them. IR has mentioned, that his music is influenced by BACH. But ofcourse, innovativeness on IR's part
is not in the fact that he has violated the doctrine of music in its pristine form, but in the fact that
he gives us such an illusion.

Dear Friends
Thank you for the responses. Mastana, Mastana is an incredibly intelligent composition and I won't believe if anyone said that IR copied the song. However, among the over 3000 songs that IR created, apart from the above few listed, IR also copied the beginning portions in the following masterpieces, which relegates the original songs to the rest area!
1. Pon Malargale Azhaithida (Rusi Kanda Poonai) IR and SJ, one memorable duet, inspired from ABBA's Money, Money, Money
2. Darling, Darling, Darling (Priya) inspired by Boney M's Sunny, Sunny: Both top of the world songs.
3. Kadal Vanchidichu (Kalyana Raman). A super melody, could not believe that melody came from abroad, but the amazing interludes and the second half of the song can never be replicated by anyone in this universe! Particularly, the pathos version still touches my heart.
When he came up with these songs, the greatest noise about Raja's copied songs was at Radio Ceylon, I clearly remember, yet they would only play continuously Raja's songs. That deep admiration from Radio Ceylon.

Dear Friends
I agree with you. Isadhe Isadhe is clearly in Raja's voice and incredibly suprisingly and annoyingly a piece of s that spoiled the other half of the song. But, my kudos to Kumar Sanu for that wonderful singing.
