I happen to think that SPB is the best singer (among both genders) in India when taking into consideration all factors that go into making a *film music singer*. I was sincerely giving SJ a compliment by calling her the 'female SPB' (it means they are equals, though not equivalent) ! Of course, I agree that there would be others who would compliment SPB by calling him the 'male' SJ :-) I am perfectly comfortable with that and I feel it has the same import as my own statement ! I also believe that they make a wonderful singing pair. I have noticed several songs where they literally compete with each other. For instance, I was listening to "Maane Thaene katti pudi.." from "Udhaya Geetham" after a long time (some 6-7 years). In the second charanam at the end of the first line, SPB lets out a sigh (hai) that blends with a flute piece so wonderfully that it leaves you wondering if IR wrote out the notes for the sigh as well ! I was so fascinated by that 'sigh' that I thought SPB showed his class over SJ (I sincerely believe that spontaeneous expressions are what separate the Men from the Boys, or Women from the Girls, I suppose ;-), when it comes to singing). When the Pallavi returned, SJ came up with her own sigh at the end of the line, "Maane Thaene Katti Pudi..." :-) That was the sigh to end all sighs...:-) I may look foolish digging so deep into songs that serve little purpose beyond frivolous entertainment. But I can't help noticing these things - and in my own way, am trying to pay my respects to these artists by acknowledging even their subtlest contributions !

Karthi,
I would really appreciate if you could give the names of the films of the songs that you mentioned...
Some of my favorite solo SJ numbers (which are NOT in the above listings) are:
Putham Puthuk Kaalai (Alaigal Oyvathillai)
Entha Poovilum Vaasam Undu (MuRattuk kALai)
Maata Un Kovilil Mani Deepam Aetrinen (Achchani?)
There are many more in the pre-IR period, where she has given us some great numbers. Most of her duets with AMRaja, like Kaalayum Neeye, Maalayum Neeye are mindblowing. I can't recollect any solo numbers though...
Hats off to SJ just for that risk she took in rendering songs like
KaNNa Nee Enge (Rusi Kanda Poonai)
Ada Poyya Poyya Pokke, ELLu Kaattukku Thekke (Poottada Poottukkal?)
and
Mammi Peru Malu (Nenjathai Killade)
where she has sung in the voices of a baby, an old woman and a teenage BOY respectively!!! No other singer has done this kind of experiment EVER!
As I have always lamented earlier, she, like many musicians in the South hasn't received the recognition north of the Vindhyas, in spite of her numerous numbers in Hindi. Her contribution to light music (she also has many classical albums to her credit)is invaluable. Hope she continues giving us soulful music in the years to come.

SPB and SJ are experts at what they do. These greats should not be compared with anybody in their business. SPB also does fantastic dubbing as well as acting too. 'Nayakan' in telugu (Nayakudu) was a huge hit too, and SPB rendered voice to Kamal. Similarly, SPB has given his voice to many, many movie stars for dialogues and for songs. There are not many around in Indian cinema as talented as SPB.

Sorry, I goofed up on the film probably because both were Mahendran's films.
There was another Mahendran film starring Sujata and some kids (some Kanneer..., I forgot the name). It had a good SJ number.

There is one song by SJ in an album called FANTASY and the ND is ARR. This song is woderful with very few instruments. Try to listen this one guys.
- From: Geetha (@ gatekeeper.oracle.co.uk) on: Wed Jan 13 09:57:19 EST 1999
Anandaum: The song ANDHI MAALAI KOVIL VANDHAI by SJ, from the album Fantasy is in the RAGAM SRI and is a 'lift' of ENDHAROMAHANU BHAAVULU, by the Saint Thyagarajar. This was not actually a composition of ARR, according to various sources, see Satish's ARR page, for example. It was marketed by Pyramid International as a work of ARR for publicity and I think they got sued for it by ARR. Apparently it's done by a band that ARR played keyboards in.
It is indeed a fantastic song, which brings out the nuances of SRI RAGAM, but factually is classed as a copy, as it's a blatent 'spin-off' of Endharoma......

Thanks for your info Geetha. If not because of you I would have been thinking that ARR has composed that beatiful song.

I appreciate the regard you have for Mrs S Janaki and SP Balasubramanyam. You're right that the talents of our South Indian singers have not traversed beyond Vindhyas.
As a tribute to our singers, we started with the creation of a web site for Mrs S Janaki. This web site www.sjanaki.com will be launched on 23rd April 2000 at Chennai. Pl visit this web site and offer your feed back.

Ramki:
The article starts by mentioning the musical night
given by Janaki in Madras some time ago. It was
recorded and shown on SUN TV two weeks ago. SJ
sang nearly non-stop for 3 full hours!! Simply Great!
It is amazing that she can now sing singAra vElanE
with absolute ease without referring to any written
notes! Many singers accompanied her on stage.
TMS did not come to sing with her even after a
request was made.. perhaps he is feeling very
bad nowadays to sing in his current voice! SJ
ended the evening with thookkam un kaNgaLai thazhuvattumE.

near death experience of SJ

Really it was shocking that SJ has touched the death line and came out of that terribel experience.. yesterday night only I read her interview in Kumudham... God is so great that HE saved SJ'life. Let us all pray for her healthy life.
To recollect something few months back (Feb 2002 beginning).. I was going to australia on official trip. I was about to take the flight to Chennai from bangalore. SJ also came into BLR airport lobby. Many people took autographs from her. I know that she has been suffering frok Asthma problem and so I went to her and enquired abt her health. To my surpise, though she is very elder to me, she stood up and answered to my queries. I did not expect this kind of respect for her fans.
In that Kumudham interview, she concluded the interview by saying "If the same thing has happened to any poor people, what they would have done..." and she showed this much concern over poor people.
Not only a good singer, she is gentle personality. She should live long. My prayers to Lord Sai.
