The first thing that came to my mind when I saw KSC & KK comparisn was that it was unfair. This I think anyone can judge. My vote goes to KSC. I will announce the result on 7th July 2002 based on the max no of votes

Ayyo! Now it's Alka's turn!
Why stop here? Go ahead and bring in the Poornimas, Sunidhi Chauhans, Anuradha Paudwals and Ila Aruns!!!
Let them sing at least a dozen numbers each in Tamil before you can start a thread like this!

Chitra is better in versatility and voice compared to ALkaji..

Lets make a list of all female singers in IFM. Suppose it contains some 40 names. Let us open one thread each for every pair. As there are 40 names, the total number of unique pairs will bve equal to 1/2 * (40 CHOOSE 2). For those who know basic cominatorial math, this is quite a large number. In other words, everybody will be able to fight till eternity :-). So here we go, KSC vs AY, AY vs KS, KS vs SS, SS vs harini,................

There is simply no doubt that Chitra is far superior in her control of voice. She raise her voice to levels like no other and sings with immense ease. Alka is definitely no match for Chitra!!

Alkaji definitely has a better voice than Chitraji,but Chitraji is more versatile and her knowledge(Hindustani&Carnatic) is vast......it is a sacrilege to compare such gr8s......

Sam,
After listening to umpteen crap songs by other 'talented' hindi singers (besides the actually talented ones like Lata, Asha, Sadhana) the reviewer has obviously lost his listening sense and fails to recognize a genuine effort to sing subtle nuances in music. If he can call Chitra's singing crap he can as well knock himself out of the serious reviewer's list. All hindi singers ever do is sing love duets all the time. None of them were ever tested to their limits as they would be if they sang in south Indian movies.

No doubt that Chitra is far superior in her voice control, and talent than any other singers in current generation. she dominated the enteir south the peak time where S.janki & P. Susheela once has dominated. yes, Limits of her hindi knowledge & Bollywoods step-mother policy against
south allways make bumbs on the ways. otherwise
sure, chitra, the only current singer has the ability to rule Indian music world

It's a shame that people are comparing legendary singers like Chitra with this Alka Younis. Chitra has proved that she can sign any kind of song. Whether it's carnatic or hindustani or film/light music, she has proved herself in all aspects. Generally people in North India (even tamils in north) don't have the knowledege to appreciate south indian singers and MDs. Their tastes are like that. These kind of comparisons are completely out of ignorance.. NOI.

No she is not. It's all the matter of talent and recognition. Tell me how long she has been singing? How many awards she has got? Has she proved that she is knowledgable and capable of singing different forms of music? As Jag said has her ability ever been tested and proved? Pl be reasonable.

================================================
Alas, awards are being used as a yardstick to measure talent. Even then, Alka has been honoured with several filmfare awards and literally thousands of her songs have been chartbusters consistently. She has also been awarded the National award twice.
Has she proved that she is knowledgable and capable of singing different forms of music?
==============================================
Depends on what you mean by different forms. But she is reigning the world of Hindi playback for nearly 14 years now. She wouldn't be in this position if she didn't have that talent. I find her voice to be extremely melodious and good in emotional content. And it has a youthful quality to it. Interestingly she has also sung some very fine bhajans and ghazals and also has a vast repertoire of Bengali songs.
As Jag said has her ability ever been tested and proved? Pl be reasonable.
===============================================
If your songs are chartbusters for more than 10 years CONSISTENTLY, I am sure it is ample proof. If you have been selected as a child progidy and your musical giftedness shines at the age of 8 or 9 itself, I wonder what more proof is required. Now what further testing of ability is required. And above all who decides that? Its the music directors and then everyone from ARR to Bhupen Hazarika and even veteran Hindi film MDs have acknowledged her talent.
Well, I am not all against Chitra (check my participation in the gems of chitra thread). But Alka is not the useless artiste some people are trying to call her.
The reviewer has been rather rude in the article on Chitra's singing in MPKDPH, but I have to admit that Chitra's singing in that movie is SAD, to put it mildly (maybe the compositions don't deserve good singing!). She has brought in that rare bit of screechiness that is quite shocking and there is a lot to be desired in her singing in that movie (as also in Ashoka).
It is surprising to see such a great artiste cut such a sorry figure on songs that wouldnt even be half as challenging as the ones she has sung in Malayalam.

Awards are just one of the aspects but mostly it's the recognition and unanymous acceptance of talent. First of all why are you comparing Chitra's hindi songs with Alka's hindi songs? That only shows that you cannot think beyond Hindi. You must compare Chitra's achievements tamil, malayalam and telugu film songs, her carnatic concerts, numerous number of devotional and other private albums with Alka's work in Hindi and bengali. I have listened Alka's hindi songs quite a few before and all I can tell is that Alka has to a long way to go to be compared with Chitra. I did not say that Alka is a good singer. Her voice is sweet but that's the only aspect I can appreciate in her and that's not good enough to be compared with Chitra.
By the way, I can come up with double and even more the size of reply in favour of Chitra in terms of awards, years of experience, number of songs etc.etc..etc.. but as I said before it will be shame to compare Chitra with Alka and so I dont want to drag this comparison business any further. Compare Chitra with other legendary singers such as Latha, SJanaki, PSuseela and even Vani Jayaram. I think that would make more sense.

--------------------------------------------
If you have read my posts on the Chitra thread, you may realise that you are mistaken. I am clearly comparing Alka's achievements in Hindi to Chitra's songs in southern languages. That is the only fair comparison. And I feel both Alka and Kavita are in the same league as Chitra (and that all 3 are in the same league as PS, LM, AB, SJ et al). You don't agree - that's fine, no objection. Thanks.

Well you quoted the reviewer's comment on Chitra's singing in MPKDPH which made me think that you were comparing Alka's hindi with Chitra's southern language songs. Anyway generally Chitra isn't that great with Hindi songs, naturally because that isn't her mothertongue. The reviewer was rude but I wasn't surprised bcos he is obviously one of those northies who think south indian singers are crap as a principle. That's how their narrow minds are set. I even remember similar comments about Vani Jayaram and KJY many years ago. So I couldn't care less about these reviews.
If Chitra sounded screech in that song why didn't Anu malik try a retake? Chitra is one of the very few singers who has a great range in her voice. No matter how high she goes, her voice wouldn't sound screech. But then after all it all depends on how your throat cooperates during the recording. Retakes are quite normal. Either Anu malik did not think that Chitra was screechy or he didn't bother about a retake. So pl don't judge based on just one song.

ALKA IS DEFINITELY BETTER!!! ALL THE PEOPLE WHO THINK CHITRA IS BETTER, U MIGHT NOT HAVE HEARD ALKA. AND O YEA, I READ SOME OF THE COMMENTS AND IF U DON'T KNOW WHO ALKA IS, THEN HOW DO U KNOW IF CHITRA IS BETTER? I'M NOT SAYING CHITRA HORRIBLE BUT SHE JUST DOESN'T HAVE IT. I MEAN SHE, HER VOICE JUST DOESN'T HAVE THAT THING. ALKA IS 100 TIMES BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!1

All you peoples listen CHITRA IS THE BEST... 14 State awards and a lotful of National Awards. Shes unbeatable. Have u ever listened the flow of her sound the way it goes.. its just like a spring flowing thru those calm forests..
Please dont compare Chitra to Alka... its a big shame. Alka Yagnik is also a taleneted singer but comparison with chitra is far beyond.. Do yu know poeples know from how long CHITRA has been singing. This long time public wudn't have beared her if shes that bad.. Listen to that fairy voice... whom they call the NIGHTINGALE OF MALAYALAM ... and dont dare to compare ....
