Indha vAra pAdalgaL – without rating but with my varNanai. Ok-vA?
Mon) MSV-yin vidyAsamAna attempt with different sangathi's with S Janaki. InimayAna paadalukku chorus merugootum AabaraNam. Bench mark for Chorus is MBS's!! Chorus of IR and ARR add lot of value to the songs. Even MSV's classic "Enge nimmadhi" had a fantastic value-add from the chorus. But in AvargaL song, chorus lacks inimai and not all the singers are in sync. This is very evident in many places and becomes an irritating factor.
kaatrukkenna vEli - 'inimaiyum iraichalum'.
TUE) KannadAsan & VAli’s pen helped many strong players like MGR, Sridhar, K Balachander etc. That “SOTue” contained strong and healthy messages to the society, with excellent motivating wording!! In addition, Paadal inimai, theLivu, miga seeraana mettu ellam adangiyadhu.
manithan enbavan dheivamaagalaam - 'inimayaana padippinai'
WED) SPB-yin mayakkum sundara kuralil indha madiri paattugaL niraya undu. IR with SPB kudukkAdha pAdalgala? Adellam manadhil niraindhirukka, idhu hmmmmmm
nee azhaiththadhup pOl oru gnaabagam - 'manadhai azhaikaavillai'
THU) Evvidha special attraction illamal irundAlum, Sadhana Sargam and KJY oru vidyasamAna pair andrO?
kaadhal vandhadhum – ‘oru murai kEtkalAm’
FRI) Oru peN thannai oru ‘geththu’dan azhagAna thimirudan varNikkum pAttu. Kannadasan-ai thavira yaar indha varthaigaLai kotta mudiyum. Susila-vin theLivaana iLamayAna kural andha ‘geththai’ demo paNNugiradhu allavA?
malar edhu en kaNgaL thaan – amarkaLamAna peNmai

BB,
Thanks.
The unusual melody, the jazziness still amazes.
See how the accompaniment style continuosly varies as the melody takes surprising turns and how the scales and keys dynamically change. Wow! MSV masterpiece.
No wonder, it taught the student Ilaiyaraja a
master lesson - a successful practitioner of the art has more things to teach than the academic professor, because he is in touch with the userbase.
Oops! What did I write there!!!

raja m,
Sure, "Or aayiram" and "Aalayamaagum" can both be added along with another hundred some songs at least. I didn't want to list dump here so I just gave a few other songs as examples.

A Or manam - songs were very popular in ilangai vaanoli. the movie was featured quite a few times in the 'Olichithiram' nigazhchi. the sudden flash back in me shows the womenfolk at home and neighbourhood sitting by the radio with tears in their eyes, sharing the pain of Bharathi's character.
one of my alltime favourite song 'unnidathil ennnai koduthen' is also from this movie.

This song has become all the more important to TFM because it has convinced IR about the greatness film MDs and MSV in particular.
CVS s fantastic picturisation of all the songs,Bharathi,Muthuraman were the highlights apart from usual KD,MSV combo.Muthuraman is one actor whom CVS has tried in various roles and almost all of them successfully.Muthu who preferred to remain KRV's heroine and Sivaji movies "Matrum palar" was an actor with lot of potential.
SPB oozing life and zeal in "Ayiram ninaivu" for the "Young"Gemini was another great song.Unnidathil ennai koduthen has an amazing Nadasvaram,Thavil seamlessly interwoven with the western beats and some remarkable singing by SJ.PS has handled the jazzy part very well.I think this was the period when MSV started experimenting with his singers and their style.Sumathi en Sundari is another example for PS experiment.
rjay,you said it!(Didn t you?)
Reporter,
Apart from some music sense you need to develop some sense of humour as well.If Katrukken veli chorus irritates you, then certainly, you must be a relative of "Unmusical" Subbu du.

> Song of the Day: malar edhu en kaNgaL thaan from avaLukkendru Or manam.
When this song starts, the starting instrumental music and the first 30 seconds or so, sure sounds like it was inspired
greatly from a number by "Herb Albert & the Tijuna Brass"...If I could track it down will post more info.
I'm pretty sure you can all feel the underlaying latino jazz..
Having said the above,I still was able to enjoy this song .Thanks.

OISG
Did it ever occurr to you, while preaching down from the lofty pedestal that you have a wont for climbing up every now and often, that you will ever be taken seriously only for what you practice?
If Reporter needs a sense of humour, you need a lesson in sociology/anthropology(You know - lesson 1 - society is an amalgam of diverse elements .one mans meat is anothers poison- and that sort of thing, you know!).
Even while swooping down on IR-fanatics for putting down directly, indirectly, obstrusely other icons of TFM, you fail to recognise that your behaviour is no less when it comes to slurs (imagined and real)on MSV not to mention your gleeful attacks on IR(in the barb of retaliating at IR-fanatics).
For someone whose hate of (post-83 or 84) IR is admittedly based on a shaky foundation of revulsion for Mike Mohan and other co-conspiratiors of the plot to discredit TF during the 80's, indeed you do a great job of analysing other people's psychological needs!

Amit,Thats what i call a reply though you have perfectly positioned yourself between me and somone with a hidden agenda!
Generally my agenda is TFM with a real bias towards MSV which i have never attempted to hide. You would certainly stumble upon pure fabricated evidence of me putting down TFM icons.
Also I dont work overtime using different IPs,assume different names with a single point programme of denouncing Co-Dfers,their efforts.Probably if that quality of mine raises me to a lofty pedastal to preach,so be it!Some people really need to be looked down upon and this elevated position suits me!
Gleeful attacks on IR?I love your choice of words though contrived they are!

Song of the Day: manathil urudhi vENdum from Sindhu Bhairavi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/manathil.rm
- A pint-sized dynamite of a song! This short Bharathiyaar song gets a royal treatment from Ilayaraja. I like the way the song starts off, in a flash, without any prelude. The song is set in thilang. The ending is also superb, with a note of pondering over "uNmai nindrida vENdum".
Bharathiyaar might have had a demanding attitude when he wrote this song, like he might have said, I want these, now you give me. The song however is mellowed down, reading more like a wishlist of a dreamer. KJY's lilting voice adds to the beauty of the song.

bb, 'manthil urudhi vendum', if you remember, had decades back featured in the film Kalvanin Kaathali-1955 (TMS-Bhanumathi)--which ragam was that version set to?
And which was the ragam that Bhararthiyar originally envisaged for this song?
The song sequence in Sindhu Bhairavi was especially memorable- Sivakumar seated amidst the waves. And an overwhelmed fisherman coming up to him with a humble gift, as he could appreciate the meaning of Sivakumar's song for the first time.

It is a real good song. saying anything else will really lie about this song. It is such a simple and great one. IR and KJY have done a very great job. No need to say about Barathiyar.
I remember Kalvanin Kaathali version also. But that situation was lover's play. But here it is peace of mind. The same song fits in both situations.

This song has a special place in my heart and evokes sweet memories of my shcool days.
Inspired by the picturisation of the song at the first instant, the song kept me going during the 'low times' of my high school days. Whenever I have a chance to look at the sea, even now, this is the first song that comes to my mind.
Sung beautifully by KJY and picturised excellently by KSB, it is a classic one.
