I do not understand tamil but i love sp bala's voice! I specially like the romantic songs he sings to modern beats! My favourites are
En Veetu thotatil - Gentleman
Kadhalenum - Kadhalar Dinam
Anbe anbe - Kadhal Desam
Anjali Anjali - Duet
Roja...
Can anyone recommend me some more film songs and film names in which sp bala has rendered songs in this style...please not old films but new films with good semi classical and fast music!...I am sure by now u have got the idea of what type of songs I mean! Many thanks to all the readers.

Suresh and Shanti Krishna star in the movie Panner Pushpangal. Interestingly Malaysia Vasudevan's best melifluous song "kodai kaal kaatre" with magical guitar work in the back ground is alos from that movie.

Raghu, I do agree with your list too, except 'tere mere beech mein' and my vote goes for LM's version.
I wanted to include 'Poonthaliraada' from PP.
But then I knew some one would do it for sure.
I forgot to add 'Vaanengum thanga vin meengal' from Moonraampirai.(The largely overlooked gem . Watch out SPB/SJ's roaring chemistry , SPB's nagaasu velaigal, the guitar chords, drum beats, trumphet - a real mega feast)
BTW,IR is the MD of PP

i am looking for an old song sung by s p bala, dont know the movie name, just know 2 lines of the song, which goes like this """"ponni nathi orethile...ponnu onnu kathu iruku"""""..this song is way back late 70s or early 80s...

Raghu,
Vaan engum thanga vin meengal is a duet by SJ and SPB in moondram pirai. This is the openning song in the movie (not sure if it is the title song). It's a great duet. In the second interlude, SPB goes 'thatha thoothoo..' Amazing piece. You must listen to it just for SPB and IR's guitar in that song

Hello folks,
I was interested by this topic about SPB, but I was rather disturbed by some people called raguvaran (@212), Guruvaran (@212), Raguvaran (@64), Regghuvaran (@157), Raghuvaran (212@) Isai Priyan (@ 157.95.211.50)etc..
These are I believe the same person who is posting under different names & IP addresses, why?
Most of these people (or this single person with many many avatharams) seem to misunderstand the terms bass & kattais. Here is an explanation checked by me and some othern experts.
Bass: deep sounding, the lowest pitch in music, the lowest male voice.
Kattais : there are 1-37 keys representing pitch ranges, with keys
1-5 being mudhal kattai (lowest one)
6-10 being rendam kattai
11- 15 being moondram kattai
16-20 being naalank kattai
21- 25 being aiyntham kattai
26-30 being arank kattai
31-35 being elank kattai
36 + being ettank kattai (highest one)
Most songs are sung between keys 16 -30, which includes 4th, 5th & 6th kattai. Every male singer has bass. Even others like Hariharan and Unni Krishnan have bass. The deep end of this bass can be achieved at singing in lowest notes (keys 1 - 4). Not many singers have done this, certainly not the new good for nothing singers.

Sangeetha Pooshanam,
Come, please listen to KJY's malyalam songs before classifying him as a Bhajan/Classical singer. He will never (OVER)emote in any song as does SPB in many songs.
By the way, I don't think Rafi hasn't received a national award. If Ek Du Je Kelye is worh National award, then the belowmwntioned songs of Rafi worth two national awards.
1. Chahunga Mein Tujhe..(superb voice)
2. Oh Duniya Ke Rakhvale..(outstanding song)

Most of these people (or one with many many avatharams) seem to misunderstand the terms bass & kattais. I will expalin the terms to remove confusion in such mind(s).
Bass: deep sounding, the lowest pitch in music, the lowest male voice.
Kattais : there are 1-37 keys, pitch ranges
1-5 being mudhal kattai (lowest one)
6-10 being rendam kattai

36 + being ettank kattai (highest one)
Most songs are sung between keys 16 -30, which includes 4th, 5th & 6th kattai. Every male singer has bass. Even others like Hariharan and Unni Krishnan have bass (low quality). The deep end of this bass can be achieved at singing in lowest notes (keys 1 - 4). Not many singers have done this, certainly not the new good for nothing singers.
SPB, KJY, Ghantasala, Balamurali Krishna & M. Rafi are the only four singers who have touched on key 1. To assess the bass of these masters, one must clarify as to which one has the deepest voice at key 1. This voice should also have the unflinching melody in it. Such unflinching melody should be unshakably maintained when singing in bass. This is where KJY stands out from the rest.
M.Rafi, Ghantasala, BMK have rough or half-opened voice, hence they do not sound as deep as KJY. SPB being a Light Music boffin, does not also sound as deep as KJY between keys 1-5. This bass has to come deep from the throat. If you put your finger on the "Adam's Apple" on the singer's throat you will feel vibration. This is very rare & difficult. Only KJY is capable of this bass to date. Best bass also means a singer can sing very unflinchingly at the highest pitch (key 36+) without screaming or sounding feminine. Many singers who lack bass make feminine or screechy sounds at high pitches. Typical examples are T.R.Mahalingham, Unni Krishnan, Hariharan , Udit Narayan , Sonu Nigam , Kumar Sanu, Punkaj Udhas, …etc.
As KJY has the best bass he easily reaches key 36+, without sounding feminine or as if he is screaming, or straining his voice. SPB/Md.Rafi although lack the extreme bass of KJY, were good at higher pitches, which is normally difficult without a very deep bass. But somehow M.Rafi is superb at the highest pitch. This is rare. This is a contrary exception to the theory of human noise and vocal music, and must not be taken as a rule.

Typical examples of KJY’s key 1 to key 36 + songs are, “Thirupaarkadalil Palli Kondaye..", "Kalaivaaniye..", "Kamalam Patha Kamalam.." etc.. When he sings from key 1, then key 6, then key 11, then key 16, then key 21, then key 26, then key 31, then key 36+, and all in between, back and forth, and forth and back, this is simply superb!.
Another example is the song “Ezhisai geethame..". Somewhere he started from key 1, with a very deep voice all the way to key 36+, without any strain at all. Now think about the reverse process of singing in key 36+ down to key 1, and KJY does this superbly again in many other songs. Compare with SPB's “ka ma re gama gasa maga sa re saa netha ma pa, sa re sa re (vedham athanilum oru nataham)" from “Salanghai Oli”, then you know the difference.
That TMS was very good at high pitches, I too agree, because he always optimised his voice at the maximum pitch. TMS always wanted to be best when he was singing in high pitches. Take the song “Paattum naane baavamum naanee” from Thiruvilaiyadal, he sounded very good when he was singing from high pitch from the beginning itself, which is awesome. He sounds efficient at high & low pitches all through the song. His carnatic singing & pronunciation is not too bad, though not as good as KJY. TMS was good at modulation & expressing feelings, but he does not have the amazing voice of KJY.
Classical singing? KJY being a "Master” when it comes to carnatic, no wonder he is awesome in terms of pronunciation of classical swarams & singing. Even BMK swallows some swarams when he sings it. When you listen to KJY's classicals you can clearly catch all swarams, none is missed, as they are all crystal clear and intact.
SPB, like someone mentions, a playback singer, is now an excellent playback singer. But if you take the music world in entirety, he is limited and boring, and always sings in the same "seyarkai" style. You cannot tell whether he is singing or mimicking.. He was hopeless at pure modulation, at expressing emotions, except in a very decided seyarkai style. For example, his "Padayappa.." song has all his complete styles in it. The four or five types of style he puts in that song are repeated in his every other song, but cleverly not all together. KJY did not stylize his songs, did no mimicry, because he did not need it. His uncorrupted voice was his immense wealth. Jayachandran and PB Shrinivas were better than SPB in smooth romantic songs but sang very few songs (you have to add other singers when you make MP3 CD), but KJY ruled over everyone in terms of melodious singing, superb expression, beautiful voice.
However, SPB is not just a singer, but he is also an excellent dubbing artist. He mainly dubbed for KamalHasan, Mike Mohan, Shadows Ravi, Nagesh, ..etc. He also acted in several Telugu and Tamil films, and one Malayali film. He has also scored music for about 40 films so far, for example, "Sikaram" with its mesmeraising songs. He also conducted DoorDarshan's famous New Year programme (December 31st 12.00 am Midnight in 1994, in Hindi !), and is the only singer to do so till date. In that programme he gave Mano a chance to sing one of his own composed songs! A suprise, and a rare huiman gesture.
I hope I did not offend anybody. The threads here are being misused badly with boring and difficult arguements and many wrong misunderestimations. So many teeth-barings & swearings especially from this raguvaran @212. Please guys, I beg you to stop this nonsense posting from many IPs & behave a bit more maturely.
