A R Rahman to conduct City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to Collaborate with Bollywood Star
Birmingham's bid to be crowned European Capital of Culture 2008 has received a major boost from the biggest name in the Indian music industry.
A R Rahman, yesterday announced details of a collaboration with the world famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
The Bollywood superstar will compose an orchestral piece, which will receive its world premiere in July, 2004, and conduct an autumn concert for the CBSO featuring his Bollywood film music.
"It was while I was at the Birmingham Film and Television Festival 2000 that I met people involved in the music industry in Birmingham and was encouraged to write a piece with the CBSO," he said.
"I love the different cultures that Birmingham has and this collaboration provides a bridge between the East and West nations at an important time in history. I chose Birmingham because of its rich diversity and the friendly people.
"I would very much like to see Birmingham become Capital of Culture — it seems to be the only place in Britain where different cultures live happily alongside each other."
As well as a year-long festival of arts and sport in 2008, winning the European culture crown is expected to kick-start an economic boost worth at least £150 million and to create more than 10,000 jobs.
The orchestral work will be based on The Conference of the Birds , a 12th century Persian poem by Farid Uddin Attar from Nishapur.
A R Rahman will also be conducting projects involving young people in a continuing collaboration with the CBSO between now and Birmingham's intended year as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Rahman has achieved superstar status through his Bollywood music and is reported to be the world's biggest selling living artist — with more than 40 million albums of his own and many more tapes of film music sold.
His first major work outside India was for Andrew Lloyd Webber, writing the score for the West End musical Bombay Dreams — which is now set to open on Broadway.
Andrew Lloyd Webber said: "A R Rahman is nothing short of a melodic genius. It has been thrilling to watch London theatre-goers embrace Bombay Dreams with such fervour."
After starting to learn the piano, aged four, Allah Rakha Rahman started work as a keyboard player, aged 11.
Following a teenage musical career, he earned a scholarship to Trinity College of Music in Oxford and a degree in Western classical music.
He made a name for himself back home in Chennai, southern India, writing and producing advertising jingles, but his career took off writing music for Indian blockbuster films.
He said: "Art is the only way to transcend our different cultures and I am very excited to be involved in this project. I will be composing the piece over the next six months between Birmingham, New York — where Bombay Dreams goes to Broadway — and my present home in Madras."

There was never a hint of any classical music in any of ARR's music. It was and is never his forte. The most you could say is may be one or two songs may have had some classical sounding music but even then he used electronics to simulate. Everybody nowadays do that so conveniently. ARR is more into pop/techno. Is he just following the footsteps of IR just for the sake of doing?

If it is a true info then congrats, gr8 thing to happen for TFM!!!!
why the question "if it is a true info" because sometimes back in DD/Sun TV kids asked questions to ARR. In that programme one question was "will you compose a symphony like IR". For that he said "symphony music is different and my school of music is altogther different".
Things might have changed over the years but still i was not sure hence the question.
Composing is fine why to conduct also? Do, normally, symphony composers conduct their work too?

Good luck Rehman, but beware of these Audio companies.Have your lawyer,CA apart from H Sridhar/Sivakumar,when you sign the audio release agreement. Please ensure the following:
1.The jurisdiction for arbitration shall be United Kingdom or US which have faster judiciary/arbitration process.RSA could be another choice which has "ambush marketing" guidelines as well!I suggest an wholesome Integrated appraoch as we want your work , see the light of the day unlike...
2.Fix up the release date. The billion $ damages clause in case of a non-release should act as a damocles sword to the audio company
3.Dont succumb to celebration calls BEFORE you actually release the work,be it symphony or not.
4.Don t get obsessed with the name SYMPHONY.If someone calls your child Miriam instead of Katheja you dont disown the child, right!
5.I know you would do it,but a cover credit to all the key musicians.
6.Avoid using titles (before and after release of your work).
7.The sangap palagai for your work is our hearts and not some senile, outdated music critics who cant see the difference between Santana and Santanam (Maharajapuram).

Good Luck Rehman, beware of the title Mozart, you can count on your fans more than anyone else,
In the year 2000, when I joined the Birmingham City Council Library, I was surprised to see a poster which said that Mani Ratnam and you were supposed to address a joint panel discussion to the Film Institute students. Mani was to speak about the art of Indian film making while you were supposed to address the art of film music. This session was to be followed by the screening of 'Alaipayudhe' with english subtitles. Circumstances then, prevented me from attending this rare oppportunity. It is good to know that you are returning to Birmingham.
You have enough experience in marketing to help avoid such disappointments as with London Royal Phil...
Beware, there are many cities and towns in europe that are vying for the coveted 'Cultural capital' title in 2008. I saw a poster in Cardiff that claimed that it was going to be the cultural capital in 2006! Remember, London, Paris and others are there as well. Beware of the dark horse Budapest which has now joined the European Union.
You might be right in claiming that Birmingham is the only city in UK that has different cultures living together happily. don't be fooled by the asians in birmingham, they will swing to anything that whites do. Conference of Birds in persian sounds good, maybe a touch of garage, indipop, reggae should help. Time to shake off the tag of repetition too, but try to avoid deliberately reusing tunes as a counter agrument.
Once again Good Luck!
