Thee Thee from Thiruda Thiruda is a beautiful example of how ARR has used pauses and beats fusing it with a male voice doing an alap and a female voice crooning melodiouly...this went well with the situation of the song..where the fusion music seemed to symbolise a kind of Siva-Sakthi union..there are many more and I'm sure fans of good music and music intellectuals will contribute their insights here !

the best and brilliant pause in ARR songs comes when one song is over and the next one starts!

The synth drum tone loop in "Urvashi Urvashi"...shows ARR's creative touch as well as in "Mustafa Mustafa"

Some of the brilliant rhythms of ARR were created by him when he did not know how to proceed with the song. Hence the pregnant pause, so called brilliant in this forum!!!

arr's brilliant pauses is the only time he is brilliant. he pauses because of that moment of truth.the rhythmic beats then happens because he is unable to sustain the brilliance.

What about this song? "rakkozhirendum muzhichchirukku" from uzhavan. It had an excellent beat and a sitar kind of a instrument playing in one of the interlude.
Also, "Sevvaanam chinnappen" from pavithra. Has got a unique rhythm with some sound of an instrument. What's that instrument? Can you through some light?

Some of the stuff i can recall from Roja till today:
I love the way the three different rhythm patterns in the same timing are played in the chinna chinna assai second interlude. And yea the second interlude in Rukumani.
And in pudhiyamugam look for that sambo sambo song second interlude.
Kadhalan and esp Gentleman showed the variety of percussion instruments from traditional to electronic. And yes, Chandralekha from Thiruda thiruda, I donno what to say abt it. Veerapandi for the timpanis and our traditional drums. And then there is this Thee Thee, for the mix of traditional and new, mellowness and roughness, calm and storm, softness and loudness, smooth and leisure female voices and intermittent (jagged) and hurried male voices, full of contrasts in that song. And it fit perfectly with the contrasts Sriram captured on the Camera. Half of the screen in lighted, some of it not, heera's body is shown in light while she is wearing a blask dress, sometimes half their faces are lighted and the other halves are in the dark and so on.Rahman was able to show the contrast and so was PC Sriram. That was one awesome video.
Ok, coming back to rhythm, there was this bombay. I like the way the cello is synthesized to make it sound like a tabla in Tu hi re. And look for tabla in that kids song, esp towards the end. And then there is this hai rama from Rangeela.
Lovebirds has this song Naalai Ulagam something, u can see how a drum (probabbly synthetic) does what a bass guitar does. And in Pyaara sa gaon 1st interlude (Zubeidaa), the drums do what a plucking guitar is used for.
Bol sajni from Doli sajake rakhna has this interesting second interlude, when the accent is changed to the middle of the bar for some time and again the accent is brought back to the beginning of the bar.
Taal is another assortment of various percussion instruments. Kariye naa runs mostly on native percussion. Another point of interest, listen to how the rhythm loop is built one on the another in the taal se taal mila intro.
Did u guys notice the claps in the song kurruku Chiru... (from Mudhalvan) that come right after the flute intro? Pay attention to the timing of the last clap there. And in the title song from the same movie, the pallavis have really really good tabla. And look for the mixing of folkish rhythm and the undergroud beats towards the end of shakalakka baby.
And PP is another album that has good rhythmic sections. Love check is the kinda stuff u hear at fusion concerts, and I love the acoustic drum (especially) and the mridangam in athisayam thirumanam. For sheer skill and sense of timing on the drummers part, the acoustic drum in adhisayam thirumanam is a decent example. Listen to the drummer when the song is in the 6 meter scale (pay attention to the snare drum).
And yea, Ranjit Barot, Sivamani etc showed their talents in various songs by Rahman. And atleast I came to know that there's something called Rhythm Programming after rahman.
Ok, one interesting thing though not related to Rahman, have u guys heard Vaan Megham from Punnagai Mannan? In the intro see how the drums are used to simulate rain. The roll on the tomtoms represents the thunder and then it followed by trills on the cymbals representing the rain splashing. Well, there's IR and there's ARR too. I might have missed somethings, may be when i remember them or i am able to recognise them, will write more.

ARR's music freshens my spirit. Even more than the douche freshens my you-know-what.
I like it when he pauses too. It gives me a chance to listen to other music.

I love ARR. He is the best.

Taking it one step further.
IR worked for ARR's father and he taught ARR's father how music is composed. ARR's father in turn taught ARR how music is composed, who inturn taught IR and others how music is done. It is vicious circle. NOM :-)
