Saravanan is starting a new series on V.Kumar, titled 'V.Kumar: Malarum NinaivugaL'. He has been in touch with V.Kumar's wife and son and is planning a comprehensive series of articles on V.Kumar. I am sure this will be a treat for VK fans. This will also feature unique introductions to the songs by V.Kumar himself, in his own voice. Thanks to Govind and VK's family for their help on this.

e hari, Kunwara baap coming in 74 means VK had an original. But the question still remains with a new twist - was RR influenced by VK for "aa ri aaja"
Kaumudi I tried giving sara the link. It seems it flopped miserably :-(
Saravanan,
Noorukku nooru had passable songs. " Unnai vaazthi paadugiren" has been beaten to death by the radio stations .
Ranga rattinam especially "malligai mottu" had VK in his elements - mel isai I am harking !!!
the other song "engellam valayosai ketkinratho" has a distinctive SMS touch the mettu, TMS'humming are all reminiscent of the veteran's paani. Am i alone in imagining this?

One of the earliest movies [I think it was the first] of 'pagudhi kalaril' was 'alibaabaavum 40 thirudarkaLum' by Modern Theaters starring MGR.
'kuLu kuLu gEva kalaril 300 adigaL' is still green in my memory!!
'Saravanan', all the songs you had mentioned are gems of tfm and thank you so much for giving us a big 'virindhu'.
"ilai koLLa villai"!!!

Hi
I have never seen Dr. Sirkali Govindarajan. I never listen to his songs. You know I always mime a tune which I don’t know where I found this. But I like it very very much. Last year I visited India. It was my seventeen. When I visited a Church with my parents, I heard a song where it comes from a pavement shop. It’s exactly the song I miming. When I asked the shop owner, he said it’s Dr. Sirkali Govindarajan song. I am really surprised. Because I never heard this song and I never know about Dr. Sirkali Govindarajan.
I later came to know my mom listen to this song when she was pregnant. There was a hindu family next to our house in USA. Even if mother doesn’t understand the language, she liked that song. I don’t know why.
Then I asked a Asian family near to my house, [I think they are Indians] They told about Dr. Sirkali Govindarajan.
I tried to get that song but I didn’t. Nobody no about that. Asian family have written a lyrics of that song . But they don’t have that song.
Could you please send me the song if you have. I have written some lines below.
It may be a .MP3 or .wmv. Whichever format is ok.
Please help me to get this song. I really really like that. I will be really really greatful if you find this song.
Song Lyrics........
Bala Murugan Vilayadal
En Padal ellam avan Padal
Mulumaiyana alahil ellam Murugavelin Muhachayal
Regards
Rebecca

Some titbits on 100/100.
I remember watching 100/100 very vividly on
Doordarshan. I am suprised to read that the movie was not a big success. I thought that
the suspense was maintained quite well, even though you would know that Jaishankar
was not the bad guy. The song Unnai Vazhthi Paadugiren forms the pivotal piece of the movie. This song is used describe the same crime from various angles. In Vijayalalitha's explanation during the investigation, she tries to spin the song as if it is targeted toward Jaishankar, eventhough
she had actually sung it for V Gopalakrishnan. Jaishankar uses the same song to give a different
version of the events. I remember, as a child,
using this song and Nalai Intha Velai from Uyarntha Ullam to illustrate that P.S.
had a voice as sweet as Lata's during my
innumerable arguments with my cousins from Mumbai as to who is the best female playback singer in India :).
V.S. Raghavan as the Anglo-Indian father was
as usual at his over-acting best!. Jaishankar
give a very restrained performance, as pointed by
Saravanan, much different from his super-cop roles. Overall an excellent film, IMHO. Excellent bunch of songs Saravanan.

If I remember right, Alibaba+40 Thirudargal was the first full length colour movie in Tamil. I think Kanvane Kankanda Theivam had a `paguthi colour'.

Great write-up Saravanan, as usual!
100/100 was a great movie by KB! naan unnai vaazhththip paadugiREn is a very sweet composition by VK, a classic song as you pointed out.
Adding to the titbits of GK...
Gemini Ganesan makes a short appearance as the College Principal investigating the Jaishankar case. I think Jayanthi also makes a brief appearance.
In the drama song, boolOgamaa, Nagesh comes as a college student, Naradhar and as Savithri. TMS sings for Nagesh-the-student, Seerkazhi G sings for Nagesh-Naradhar and LRE sings for Nagesh-Savithri. (LRE is amazing! She has even sung a full song for MGR!) YGM comes as Yaman and TMS gives voice for him. It is an interesting song.
Titles of 100/100 mention VK as mellisai maamaNi. Who gave this title to VK and when? (Saravanan: Did you discuss this in your earlier write-ups?)

Looks like 100/100 is another of KB's movies with pAluRavu in direct/indirect focus...There are very few KB films that one can watch with kids without neLiyal or VCR FF...
`unnai vAzhthippAdukiREn' is a great song, a classic no doubt in TFM...it had such wonderful chorus too...(another gem taken off from my MSV list)...PS at her very best too...

100/100 is a wonderful movie. I remember srikanth playing as a cop investigating the case. Some of the camera angles and the camera work using black and white shadows were awesome. I remember one scene, where the camera zooming from under the chair srikanth was sitting were unusual and eye-catching.
Unnai Valthi padugaren is a all time classic song. The beats were really good for that period.
I feel that there is a huge difference in VK's songs from 60's and 70's. In terms of tunes and orchestration, 70's songs started to have a unique quality in it. By average songs were more refined and started to have a different structure from songs from other composers in that period.
Thanks
e.hari

Thanks, all, for your responses!
Sorry about the abrupt opening of 'thanga thottil', I recorded it from Radio Ceylon. Many years back, one afternoon, this song was played. After hearing the announcement, by the time I hurriedly inserted a cassette and started recording, a little bit of the prelude had already gone by :)
Vengayam, which particular SMS song do you mean, or are you referring generally to SMS Naidu's style?
sk, Suresh told me that it was MGR who conferred this title upon VK. I'll try to find out when this happened. And, yes, Jayanthi does make a brief appearnce as the mother of one of the girl students- Jaikumari?
hari, you're absolutely right about VK gradually evolving over the years, his style in the 70s was refreshingly different.

Saravanan,
i was alluding to the general style. it is not Msvish if you get what I mean ;-)
of course as MSV himself sung Unakenna korachal nee oru raja - Vk and his fans should take solace in this!!
GK ,
I am in complete agreement on your take on VSR. avar "anju paisa koduttha anju rubaaikku nadippavar" . we used to call him thundu udhari raghavan. I have lost count of the movies in which VSR "throws the towel" tauntrum be it in anger, disgust or panivu - so much so that he used to go for the imaginary towel in his shoulder even when he was playing a rich man in a three piece suit.
much like kattai Gopi stiffly saluting even if he plays a thug ;-)) ha those were the days.

Dear Saravanan,
Thanks for starting this lively discussion on VK.
Can u please tell me wheather there is any link to hear VK's songs online?

Bringing AMR back was a coup indeed lest we would have missed AMR's Rasi nalla Rasi and Chinna KannaNe.
Vengayam- SMS style? Perhaps the song stays close to one of the versions of " Nee Enge" from Mannippu and for me it is more closer to "Chandrodayam oru peNNanatho".But this is another one of VK's song with a great start of pallavi.
"Unnai vaazthi paadugiRen"- the more i listen to this song PS plans a comeback to claim back her numero uno status in my heart.)))
Saravanan
These days i have stopped writing for SPB songs and your write ups -the reason is simple...blame it on my Englelse vocabulary.
Thurayur "Bharathi talkies"il 100/100 paarthabothu (approx 3-4 years) pala vishayam puriyavillai. But now i understand that KB can take credit for speedening up my growing-up process. He was the COMPLAN for basic instincts.))))
Vengayam,my family comment is "VSR sappitu mudichathum kathellam pathu aidum" (That s a B-dialect and i am unable to translate!)

Digression :
Saravanan, quick , let out some VK-SJ combo songs before OISG changes his "fickle " mind :))
My last ditch effort: OISG, "Unnai vaazhthiya" kettuptu appidiye "unnidathil ennai koduthen", "oomai pennai pesa sonnaal uravo","kannan mana nilaiyai","ponnenben"," poon kodiye poon kodiye" idhula yedhavadhu illai yellaathaiyum kelungo. seri aayidum. :)

Digression again :
Konjam bitter medicine venumna PS/SJ rendu perum paadina "kaalathai vendravan nee
Kaaviyamaanavan nee" (yedho MGR film) paatai kelum. SJ yeppidi oru padi jaasthi improvise panni irukkaarnu puriyum. Otherwise irukkave irukku "pallavi enru mannan ketka paaduvendi" song. (Idhula kodumai enna naa SJ had to sing for thikku vaai shuba). Hear the brigas of SJ and compare with plain singing of PS. Iam deliberately quoting preIR period as that was when PS was in top form.SJ was just not given her due.PS could have never sung songs like "aanai itten nerungaadhe " type of dramatic songs with the same effect.
