I was born and brought up in Bangalore and I learnt tamil the hard way mainly by reading magazines like kumudham and vikatan and by listening to tamil songs. There was no tamil language in school, now I wonder how much I missed in my life by not having tamil in school. So, I do not know tamil grammar and such hi-fi tamil as it is there in this song. If you could explain some of the lines in this song it would be really great. This is one of the reasons why I am unable to participate in Kannadasanin padaippugal :( sob sob.

Hi Bhaskar, Thanks for the correction, I knew that the song "Kaathalin Deepam Onru" is from the movie "Thambikku Entha Ooru" - Rajnikanth, Madhavi Starrer, etc and I was thinking of writing the correct movie name but ended up writing "Thambikku Oru Paattu"(which also has some good songs by IR)
Anyway, I stand corrected.

kaatru veLiyidai is one of my favorites, for the lyrics, the tune and the emoting. Who is the MD?
Bhaskar, for a person who is self-taught in thamizh you have excellent tastes in lyrics--fantastic! which lines do you want to know the meanings for? you may also enjoy going thru TFM group's compilation of Bharadhi songs to get more of those types of songs.
Amar, skipped going-out for lunch with my colleagues so I could do this marathon typing session--as Bhaskar says it is fun to recall songs which are in our memory banks.

Some more additions;
Agayap pandhalilae ponoonjal aadudhamma - Ponoonjal - MSV (romba sugamana duet)
Oruvar meedhu oruvar saindhu - Some MGR movie -MSV
PooVaNNam pola nenjam - Azhiyadha Kolangal - Salil Choudhry (I think this is the first duet I noticed that there was no lip sync. and the song was played in the background - trendsetter).
BTW can anyone explain these lines in "kaatru veLiyidai kannamma'
paththu maatru ponoththa nin meniyum - Normally pure gold is referred as 'paththarai maatruth thangam' - what about the missing half here?

Ramki, Ravy, Sathiya Keerthi, Sathya, Amar, Kanchana, Sujatha, cp:
Thanks for your contributions. Special thanks for Ramki for posting the lyrics for vennilave vennilave & sippi irukkudhu muthum irukkudhu.
I encourage people to post the lyrics of some of the songs and explain like Ramki why that has the mayakkavaikkum factor in it. It will be more interesting to read them than just listing the first line of the song. I am not discouraging listing songs :) but if you can highlight some of the specialty of lyrics in the songs that would be great.
I like people bringing out new meanings to the lyrics which are very appropiate to the wordings but even the kavingyar might not have thought of such meanings when he penned the songs.
Here goes one of my all time favourites . . .
I can't explain the meaning because I am very weak in Tamizh but when I come across such words I can understand them internally in my mind. I have highlighted such lines . . .
Oru raagam paadalodu kaadhil keetadho

Sathiya Keerthi & Ramki:
Please accept my humble apologies for making you do all the correction work. Obviously, my depth of knowledge re MD's compared to you both is relatively poor; secondly, I'd just come out of a 5-hour meeting to clinch a deal, and wasn't at my sharpest re TFM. I should have just given a headline naming the 10 MDs I covered. Sorry!
Ramki:
Thank you very much for giving the lyrics for my latest favorite vennilavae :)) Within the context of the song and the scene the line ulagai rasikka vaeNdum naan un poandra peNNoadu is so intense and gets to you somehow, even tho the words are simple!
Bhaskar:
In addition to all of Ramki's Kannadhasan threads, your topics are keeping the lyrics appreciation dimension of TFM alive and well to complement the music appreciation in the Forum. Thank you! I'll do a separate posting for kaatru veLiyidai later--I'm trying to do justice to those lines in English. (BTW, I've had thamizh as a subject only till high school, so let me clarify that I'm no thamizh pundit; I'm trying to catch up now. )
Since you had requested lyrics, I'll start posting the lyrics for some of the songs I'd mentioned; my favorite lines are asterisked.
I'm sure the entire gang will pitch in with their favorite lyrics too.

(besides T.C.Rao's melodious music and AMR's mellifluous voice, I find it fascinating that the hero's lines--the second pair in every stanza--show more restraint than the heroine's. The storyline is re how the hero forces the heroine to sacrifice their mutual love so she could dedicate herself to her Bharata Natyam; finally they do get together.)

Bhaskar:
here's my translation of kaatru veLiyidai kaNNamma. here goes:
With every breath I draw, oh Kannamma
I think of thy love and derive pleasure.
Thine lips like founts of ambrosia
Thine eyes steeped in and brimming with moonlight
Thine body like pure unblemished gold.
For all our lifetime on this earth
??????????????
??????????????
Thou art my sweet life/ soul, oh Kannamma
Thou art my sweet life/ soul,
I shall worship/cherish thee all the time.
All sadness and tribulations gone
When I think of thee.
Sweet nectar springs in my lips
While uttering the name Kannamma
Kannamma...Kannamma
While uttering the name Kannamma
Sweet nectar springs in my lips.
Thou art the eternal flame that grows from the fire of life
Thou art my mind, thou art my will.
Vocabulary:
kaLikinraen=derive/experience joy (in first person)
amudhu ootru=fountain of ambrosia/nectar/honey
thadhumbum=brimming with/overflowing with
pon oththa=like gold
vaiyam=world; yaam uLLa mattilum=we-live-until (until we live)
innuyir=inimai+uyir=sweet life/soul
poatruvaen=worship (in first person)
uyir thee=life fire(fire of life); vaLar=growing; jyothi=flame/eternal flame
sindhanai=thought/mind; siththam=will.
Bhaskar, I hope that helps. I have forgotten the two lines with ????, and your romanization is baffling me. Unfortunately, I don't have a cassette; is it ingoar viNNavanaaga puriyumae--that means "here I perceive a devaloaga resident". Pls. let me know, norw I'm curious too.

Before Baskar accuses me of ignoring this thread, allow me to give three of my favourites; one old, one from 80s and one from the 90s.
The kaathalan sends his love through the waves of the river to his girlfriend on the akkarai:
Paattukkup paatteduththu - naan paaduvadhaik kaettaayoa
Thulli varum vellalaiyae - nee poaith thoodhu solla maattaayoa
Koththum kili ingirukka, koavaip pazham angirukka
Thaththi varum vellalaiyae neepoai, thoodhu solla maattaayoa
Thaththi varum vellalaiyae neepoai, thoodhu solla maattaayoa
The sheer poetry of the next verse is simply fantastic. Heroine uses the wind to send her thoothu!
Ilam vaazham thandaaga, elumichcham kodiyaaga
Eenra valaik kaip pidichchu iravellaam kan muzhichchu
Illaadha aasaiyilae yen manasa aadavittaan
Aadavitta machchaanae odam vittu poanaanae
Odam vittu poanaanae...odam vittu poanaanae
Oorengum thoongaiyilae naan ulmoochchu vaangaiyilae
Oasaiyidum poongaatrae needhaan oadippoaich chollividu
Hero uses nature's elements to describe his lover, saying he wants to fish for the fisher(wo)man! In the beginning it was just aasai before it developed into full-fledged kaathal.
Minnalaay vagideduththu maegamaayth thalaimudiththu
Pinnalaay jadaipoattu en manasa edaipoattu
Meen pudikka vandhavala naan pudikkap poaraenae
Mai ezhudhum kannaalae poi ezhudip poanaalae
Aasaikku aasai vachchaen naan appurandhaan kaadhalichchaen hoai
Oasaiyidum poongaatrae needhaan oadippoay sollividu
Only the best will do for the Hero, says Heroine, in spite of her poverty. She also claims that only her body is with her. The heart? You know....
Vaazhaippoo thiriyeduththu vennaiyilae neiyyeduththu
Yezhai magak kudisaiyilae yeththi vachchaan oru vilakku
Yeththi vachcha kaigalilae en manasa naan koduththaen
Nenju mattum angirukka naan mattum ingirukka
Naan mattum ingirukka...naan mattum ingirukka
Hero finishes the song by now sending the moon as his thoothu, saying that he is the sun for her thaamarai.
Thaamarai avalirukka ingae sooriyan naanirukka
Saatchi sollum chandiranae needhaan oadippoay thoodhu sollu
Paattukkup paatteduththu naan paaduvadhaik kaettaayoa
Saatchi sollum chandiranae nee thoodhu solla maattaayoa
The next song is a classic of its own bringing the best of the singer (SPB) lyricist (?) And MD (IR). Kaathaluna summaava. Here hero sings without taking a breath! He claims no one can live without kaathal and goes further by saying there can be no song without women!

One of the newer songs that bring out emotions is my next selection. Hero has lost himself .... ... to his lover of course!

The true feelings of lovers are expressed next. When short moments apart feel like eons and the other way around. (I bet every one of you can identify with that!) The poetry gets even better when he tells her to lie if she doesn't love him!

Hello Kanchana, pPiramaatham ungal Poem!!! Unamaiyai sollungal, athai ezhuthumbothu original song paadugiramaathiri varavendumenra ninaippothu ezhuthineergala( You must have )? That makes it twice as difficult!
In fact, I tried singing your english version of "Kaatru Veliyidhai Kannamma" in the same tune and I was not only successful but also enjoyed singing it in English. Great Job - "Thoppigal" off to you!
Plus, your translation of the some of the complex tamil words shows your "pulamai" and you claim to have studied Tamil only upto "high school"?
Whenever I heard the first line of that song,
"Kaatru Veliyidai Kannamma", I always thought that the Kavignar was describing Kannamma's Iduppu.
Kaatruveli - Atmosphere which we can call "Thin Air" and
Idai - Hip.
"Thin-Air-Hip Kannamma"
But, that's my interpretation!

Some more thoughts on the two interpretations: in the original thamizh kavidhai, is there an "ik" letter between "idai" and "kannamma". If there is, then the "thin-as-air-waisted Kannamma" is the right interpretation (I think based on my high school knowledge of syntax & grammar.)

I am afraid that there is an 'ik' in the line

but that shouldn't change the meaning of the line. That is how tamizh has to be written when written.
For Ex. Kalyana parisu is wrong I believe but
Kalyanaip parisu is only correct. I am struggling without the tamizh font support here to clearly explain that 'ip' is necessary to be grammatically correct.
Similarly that 'ik' may be necessary to be grammatically correct but if that changes the meaning of the line then something is wrong :(

Bhaskar,
you are not correct. the consonants (thamizhil otRu) appear only in
certain places. A famzous example is "rowdy payal" and "rowdyp payal". The
former refers to a payal who happens to be a rowdy but the later refers
to the son of a rowdy. Therefore the "k" at the end of kAtRu veLiyidai
makes the difference. And according to vAsu raghunathan that otRu
appears. But I strongly feel that that should not be there. Maybe it was
a typo. Here is my interpretation.
Remember the kAdhalin dhIpam onRu song? Think of a similar situation,
where bhArathiyAr is in the middle of a large plain field wandering
around and thinking about his wife (chellammA - on whom he probably
wrote all these sensous kaNNammA songs) who has gone home (piRandha
vIdu). There
comes this beautiful poem kAtRu veLi yidai kaNNammA. (My personal
opinion - please do not listen to the kappalOttiyath thamizhan
song. it's the ultimate disgrace to this wonderful song. mind you
i am talking about the music.)
kAtru veLiyidai kaNNammA (kAtRu nandRAga vIsum inthe veLi yidai - ground-il,
Oh kaNNama)
nindhan kAdhalai yeNNik kaLikkindREn (I am deriving pleasure thinking
about you. kaLiuppu comes from the word kaL. hence kaLikkuppu means "high".)
amudhUtRinai ... nin mEniyum (you and kAnchanA have
explained it well. These lines as you can easily identify are just
varNanais.)
indha vaiyaththil yAmuLLa mattilum - yenai
vEtRu ninaivindRith thEtRiyE - ingor
viNNavanAgap puriyumE
Here viNNavan, i think, refers to indhiran, the king of gods. (he is a
nymphomaniac. but that's besides the point!!!) The lines, therefore, mean
O, kaNNammA. as long as i live on this earth, you prevent me from
thinking about other women. the reason is i have already become
indhran, the king of gods, and you are the apsarAs all put together.
(Besides their physical beauty, the apsarAs have nothing to their
credit. Watch the previous varNanais closely.)
He realizes immediately that his love for her is not just carnal.
Hence
nI yenadhinnuyir kaNNammA - yendha
nEramum undhanaip pOtRuvEn
watch the next line. it's classic poetry.
thuyarp pOyina, pOyina thunbangaL This line is so sweet that
it is one of my favorite lines in thamizh poetry.
ninaip ponnenak ... pEr sollum pOzhthilE (you know the meaning.)
uyirth thIyinilE vaLar sOthiyE (He crosses all bounds and claims
her to be his virility. uyirth thI refers to kuNdalini - meaning sperm
and vaLar sOthi means AtmA.)

I have read that Bharathiyar had written kavidhais on Lord Krishna imagining the Lord is various forms - as a child, as a servant, as a friend and as a lover. There are various ways in which devotion or Bhakthi is expressed to the Lord. The highest form of love is said to be "Madhura" which is nothing but the love between a man and wife. I understand that Bharathiyar has tried to convey this love & devotion to the Lord in the song "Kaatru veliyidai kannamma". Most of Bharathiyar's songs express his leaning towards spirituality and philosophy.

Bhaskar:
As I have stated before, "Madhura" or the love between a man and wife is stated the highest form of devotion in Hindu philosophy.
Don't u think the lines below also tally with the Love one has for the Almighty!
Here is my explanation:
kattru veliyidaik kannamma
->I go with Kanchana's explanation. Bharathiyar means in every inhale/exhale I think about you Kannamma.
nindhan kadhalai yenni kalikinren
->I think about our love and enjoy it
amudhootrinai oththa idhazhgalum, idhazhgalum
->these lines Bharathiyar would have used to express a man's love for his wife in the physical world. Anyway, he imagines the Lord as his wife- so what is wrong in explaining her physical beauty.
Nilavoorith thadumbum vizhigalum
-> Your eyes shines like a full moon
patthu maattru ponnOththa nin meniyum
-> Your body is like a pure gold
indha vaiyathil yamulla mattilum
-> Until I live in this world(or until I take piravis)
yennai vEttru ninaivindri serthiye
->Except you I will not have anything in my mind
inghor vennavanaaga puriyume
->Which will make me realize you and attain Godliness
nee yenadhinnuir kannamma ah...
->You are my sweet soul(Atman)
yendha neramum undhanai pottruven
->I will always praise you because I am in you
thuyar poiyina poyina thunbangal
->All my sorrows and sufferings are gone
ninai ponena konda phozhudile
-> When I think of you and realized you
yendhan vaiyinile amudhurudhee
->I could taste the sweetness of amudham(he means the ultimate bliss)
kannammavendra paer sollum podhile
-> When I utter your name Kannamma
kannamma ...
->yearning to realize the Lord and surrender unto him
uyir theeyinile valar jodhiye
->As Arularasan said Bharathiyar could have mentioned the "Kundalini" which is a fireball that which travels from the belly to the head when one attains higher levels of realization.(valar jodhi - rising kundalini )
yendhan sindhanaye yendhan sittame
I think this line should be undhan sindhanaiye yendhan sittame - Someone please clarify.
->thinking about you all the while is my goal in my life
Bhaskar, I always found a spiritual explanation in most of Bharathiyar's songs about love.
Another song where he expresses his love for the Lord as a lover.
ninnaiyae radhiyenru ninaikkiraenadi kannammaa
thannaiyae sakiyenru charanam eydhinaen
ponnaiyae nigarththa maeni minnaiyae nigarththa saayal

yaavumae sugamunikkoar eesanaam enakkum thoatram
maevumae ingu yaavumae kannammaa kannammaa kannammaa
Bhaskar, note the last two lines:
yaavumae sugamunikkoar eesanaam enakkum thoatram
maevumae ingu yaavumae kannammaa kannammaa kannammaa - Hope I am right with my explanation about spirtual yearning of Bharathiyar in his kavidhaigaL.

Bhaskar:
There is nothing confusing about cp's statement. The ultimate spiritual love and its manifestations are embedded in the text of this song, thereby making it the ultimate love song. (bhakthi or devotion is not devoid of love according to the traditional culture or literature.)
I'm assuming aruLarasan's "airy open grounds" interpretation is the right meaning for kaatru veLiyidai.
- From: aruLarasan (@ psiphi.umsl.edu)
on: Thu Oct 16 18:44:22 EDT 1997
Hey pasangaL (guys, i mean),
I am very much tempted to make it a discussion on just bhArathiyAr pAdalgaL
which will be unfair (or unconnected to TFM). Anyway, cp, I don't
agree your point. talk about physical beauty and fiinally, to escape
social persecution (or taboo) just claim that all you meant was GOD. this is
to me is hypocracy (sorry for being so blunt). in that vein many,
at least to me, many bakthi pAdalgaL are nothing more than love songs.
in the whole of indian (hindu) mythologies and history, i won't
call anyone a true bhakthan except dhruvan and hanumAn. everything
else can be related to human physical pleasure. and i don't think
that's wrong. to me ultimately form of devotion is plain natpu
(nattapin vIdillai natpALavarkku - thirukkuRaL: one friendship is
established there is no escape from it). everything else, thAip
pAsam, thanthaip pAsam, shrungAsam (kAdhal) etc. are just plain
physical in character, however much we might want to divine them.
In the song kAtRu veLiyidai kaNNammA, there is only one word
that suggests any divinity. that word is thEtRiyE (seventh line).
the word means save, pacify etc. but for that one word I can't see
any connection to god. in an ensemble just a sample size of one
is not enough to prove a point. therefore, it was meant to be
beautiful love song of a man for his wife (beloved).
ninnaiyE rathiyendRu ninaikkiREnadi kaNNammA also appeared in a
movie (yEzhavathu manithan? or some shAlini/shAmli movie with rahman
as the hero?). therefore we can discuss this also. no questions about
the mayakkam this song gives you (even the listeners, not just
the singer). There was a typo in cp's rendition. please read
sashi in place of sakhi .
sashi means moon and in many cultures (north indian, south
indian, english, roman, greek) moon is considered and agent of love.
(the singer also, unfortunately, sings sakhi.)
ninnaiyE rathiyendRu ninaikkiREnadi kaNNammA
thannaiyE sashiyendRu sharaNam yeidhinEn
in the above lines you can see the desperation of the man for his lover.
ponnaiyE nigarththa mEni minnaiyE nigarththa chAyal
pinnaiyE nithya kanniyE
Again there is this only one word nithya kanni (which means when
taken literally kanyAkumAri or parAshakthi) which suggests any god-relation.
mAranambugaL yen mIdhu vAri vAri vIsadi
what more do you want to show his lust?
kaNpArAyO vandhu sErAyO kaNNammA
yAvumE sugamunikkOr IsanAm ennakkum thOtRam
mEvumE ingu yAvumE kaNNammA kaNNammA kaNNammA
To understand these lines break it as
yAvumE sugaminukkOr IsanAm. I don't know what is meant by sugamuni
here. whoever they are, for them everything is Isan - GOD.
enakkum mEvumE ingu yAvumE kaNNammA. similarly for me, everything
here is kaNNammA. I don't think god comes here anywhere. this is
another example of bhArathi's great love songs. that's the
mark of a great poet. he always keeps you guessing what he really
meant. a song with such simple words and we are still arguing
about its meaning. that's a classic.
(I know some statements here are sharp. I didn't mean to hurt
anyone, just putting my point across.)
cheers,
aruLarasan

CP, Arul:
As I said before that I like people bringing out new meanings to the lyrics which are very appropriate to the wordings but even the kavingyar might not have thought of such meanings when he penned the songs.
This is a typical example of that, but I wouldn't call this as a lyric but I would call this as poem.
I am agreeing with both of your interpretations and exchanging views is the primary thing of this TFM DF and not disagreement.

Didn't say much before for fear of digressing into a major philosophical discussion. But since it has already become one, I'd like to put forward some thoughts. (Since hindu mythology has been pointed out I'll use it as a starting point.)
Devotion or bhakti has been defined by Adi Sankara as svasvaroopa anusandhaanam--contemplation upon the essential nature of the self. In the ultimate sense, this bhakti or devotion reveals the identity or relationship of one's self with the Lord. This relationship in human terms could be to view God as a Mother, Father, Child, Lover, or any other Role With Respect to Self. If Bharadhi gives a female form to Sri Krishna so he could view Him as a Lover in his Kannamma songs, does it stop him from being a "bhakthan" or minimize his bhakti? To me, it paints the picture of a human who is not a mutrum thuRandha muzhu gnaani yet, but feels an ardent love for the Supreme Being and an intense need to express it, and comes closest to describing his bhakti by perceiving a Lover relationship with the Lord.
There is a spectrum of 10 types of devotion anchored at the two ends by shravanam (listening to God stories) and aatmanivaedanam (total surrender to God). Hanuman, whom you have held up as one of the only two true bhaktas in Hindu mythology actually exemplies one type of devotion--Dasyam or service of the lord-- which falls within this spectrum. Does that mean all other forms of devotion, especially Bharadhi's type Keerthanam with the Lover uruvagam, are less worthy?
Soodi kodutha sudarkodiyaaL ANdAL sings:
kadhiroLi dheepam kalasamudan yaendhi
sadhiriLa mangaiyar thaamvandh edhirkoLLa
madhuraiyaar mannar adinilai thottengum
adhira pugudha kanaakkaNdaen thoazhinaan,
and says "andha maithunan nambi, madhusoodhanan vandhennai kaithalam patra kanavu kaNdaen naan". She sees the Lord as her husband and sings devotional songs too as a result of her love and bhakti. There is a school of thought that states that ANdAL was not a female but Periyaazhvaar's self-imposed female name/ amsam. If that is the case, I would say that Bharadhi's Kannamma songs are the more modern embodiment of the spirit of ANdAL's paasurams!
In the modern TFM world, we've had a poet who used any opportunity to show his bhakti to Sri Krishna by putting himself in the female role and penning songs like kannanai ninaikkaadha naaL illayae etc. It was Kannadhasan, of course, and the above is a fact by his own admission. The personal values of this poet are irrelevant; all that matters is to understand how he defined his relationship with God and wrote those intense love songs. (picturization is a different issue!)
The commonality between all these cases: the poets are in love with God and give Him a role which will allow them to express their love in a way they and other (less devoted?) humans can appreciate. This is actually the reverse of what aruLarasan mentions above: that spirituality is used as a cover for physical relationships which are taboo in a conservative culture.
In summary, my theory is that at a conscious or sub-conscious level, sensuality has been used to make spirituality more appealing thru thamizh literature from the olden days to today, and not the other way around; therefore, these literary works can be interpreted on several different planes depending on the listener's frame of mind. This is true whether we are talking about Naalaayira Thiviya Prabandham or Bharadhi's Kannamma KavidhaigaL or Kannadhasan's Thiraippada Kannan PaadalgaL. The net beneficiaries are us, fans of these songs, even if we (I) can't fully translate some of them. :)
I apologize for the length of this posting, but aruLarasan's posting was interesting enough to post this. Just like he said, the intent here is not to undermine anyone's individual beliefs but just to present another point of view. Kanchana: Excellent explanation. You have mentioned about 2 ultimate Bakthas. In Vaishnavite traditions one of them is "garuda (known as 'periya thiruvadi') and the other is Hanuman (chinna thiruvadi). Interpreting these songs, as you've said is mostly depending upon one 's frame of mind at that time. Like the name of Kamarajar as interpreted as 'Kamam+Rajar' by his less sophisticated political enemies.
AruLarasan: I think the correct word is 'sakhi' as CP has mentioned and not 'sashi'. Sakhi means a close friend (feminine) and that fits well with the rest of the lyrics.

Kanchana:
You gave a beautiflul explanation! I really learned more about philosophy and hindu mythology from your posting and am really happy about it. I would say that another good soul who was Lord Krishna's devotee who presented her self as a lover was Bhaka Meera.
Arularasan:
Don't you know that there is a famous saying "God is Love" and there is no doubt that God is love-personified. Saying that love exists only in friendships and not in parental love or between lovers is unacceptable. I think Kanchana has explained most of your questions.

Guys, (pasangaL, I mean)
Sorry for hijacking this discussion topic in a hyperbolic fashion.
Ravy: It IS sashi not sakhi. I checked the song yesterday.
kAnchanA: i enjoyed your essay. but netRik kaN thiRappinum kutRam
kutRamE enbadhupOl, as you have already mentioned, even it were ANdAL,
AzhvArs, nAyanmArs, ..., the songs are mainly love songs and
kana kaNdEn thoZhi by ANdAL is especially so, at least to me. Even
these so called saints, unfortunately, are unable to escape physical
pleasure when experiencing bhakthi. After all who has experienced god
in our times? may be mahAtmA gAndhi alone. Coming back to bhArathiyAr,
there are two more very sensuous songs that have appeared in the movies.
(i) suttum vizhich chudar thAn kaNNammA
sUriya chandhirarO
P Susila sings this song to an amazingly beautiful tune set by,
i think, shankar ganesh.
(ii) Asai mugam maRanthu pOchchE ithai
yAridam solvEnadith thOzhi
this osngs appears in unnAl mudiyum thambi. IR does excellent
work by giving it in bilahari. (I might be wrong, because, i have
not listened to this song in a very long while).
cp: you are absolutely correct in saying god -s love personified.
to rephrase it, love is god. only in friendship do i find unadulterated
love. everything
else, even the so called thAi pAsam, are adulterated with selfish
motives. just my views.
Others: Let's bring this topic back to sensuous songs once again.
can someone post the lyrics for
kAththiruppAn kamala kaNNan
I think, this song appears in uththama puththiran (shivAji). SK pOndRa
periyavargaLLukku, I am sure, this will be a favorite one.
I just heard, in malaysian radio FM6, that today is kaNNadhAsan's

To: Kanchana, CP, Bhaskar & AruLarasan:
I have enjoyed the various interpretations of
kaatru veLiyidai kaNNammaa, which perhaps
the great kavi himself may not have thought of!
This reminds me of an anecdote (see PPP for details).
Once, in a function to felicitate Kannadhasan,
a speaker gave the following example that
illustrates Kannadhasan's play with words:
enna paarvai undhan paarvai
idai melindhaaL indha paavai
The speaker said that, apart from the usual meaning
in these lines there is a nice word-play:
when the idai ezhuththu r in paarvai
goes (melindhaal) you get the word, paavai.
Then Kannadhasan, in his speech said that he had
no such interepretation in mind and appreciated
that speaker for thinking of such a brilliant
interpretation.
To: AruLarasan
I have two tiffs with you. First, I feel GRamanathan
did a great service to kaatru veLiyidai kaNNammaa
(and a few other Bharathi songs too) by giving
a GREAT tune and hence making it reach the
common man; if not for him, I wouldn't even have
known about the existence of such a song!
Even the duet formed using this song can be
given an interpretation, I think. You don't even
have to think of it as a duet, but just as two
friends singing a song written by the popular
kavi. I also felt that even the picturization was
done very nicely in K.Thamizhan without damaging
the song in any way!
Mahathma Gandhi was the greatest Karma Yogi seen
in recent times; but he experienced God???
I think you should have quoted Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
or Ramana Maharishi.

To all:
Thank you for a great discussion and feedback. I think we all gained something out of it.
To all the Bharadhi fans (aruLarasan, cp, Amar, Bhaskar):
I have come up with yet another interpretation of kaatru veLiyidaik Kannamma (please don't groan!)
That letter "ik" between "idai" and "Kannamma" has been bothering me--that implies that "idai" is an adjective to Kannamma. One other viable meaning--"idai" indicates the "yaadhava kulam" where kaNNan grew up. (remember another Bharadhi song engirundho vandhaan, idai jadhi naan endraan) Since the entire song is a kaNNan song where Bharadhi uruvagapaduthufies Him as a female, the "yaadhava" interpretation is possible.
Therefore, the meaning of the first two lines:
In the open air, oh yaadhava Kannamma
I think of thee and derive pleasure from thy love
I've also been puzzling about the deeper meanings behind uyir theeyil vaLar jyothi bit. uyir thee is fire of life while jyothi means a flame/eternal flame as I said above. In a poetic sense, thee can be seen as an uncontrolled and undisciplined energy whereas jyothi is eternal, steady and sheds light. Therefore, Bharadhi must mean the growth of the paramaathmaa residing within his jeevaathmaa, ie, growing elightenment.
So with these new meanings in mind, and taking into account all your input my final interpretation of the song:
kaatru vaaindha thiRandha veLiyil, idaikkulathu kaNNanae
un kaadhalai eNNi peru magaizhchi adaigiraen.
un idhazghaL amudhootrinai poandravai.
un vizhigaL nilavooRi thadhumbugindrana.
un maeni maasu maruvatra thangam poandradhu.
naan ivvulagil uLLa varai
un ninaivandri vaeru onrum saeraadhu
ingu naan unnai adaivaen.
neeyae en innuyir, kaNNaa
neeyae en innuyir.
ennaeramum naan unnai thudhippaen
en thuyaramum thunbangaLum poyina
unnai naan adaindhavudan.
en naa inikkinradhae
kaNNaa endru un peyar sonnaalae
kaNNaa......kaNNaa
kaNNaa endru peyar sonnaalae
en naa inikkindradhae.
en jeevan enum theeyilirundhu vaLarum aathma (paraman) enum dheepa oLi neeyae
un sithappadiyae naan sindhippaen/ seyal paduvaen.
Any comments? Just for my own satisafaction, I will also complete the translation to English (partially done) above, but will not post it to conserve space.

Hi all,

Hi SK,
I am very much offended by the splitting of the line

This was sung by a female. This has an gory male chauvinistic tone

Kanchana:
Don't you think the lines uyir theeyiniLe valar jodhiyE relates to the Kundalini sakthi that everyone possesses and is spread as a fire in the body and is roaring uncontrollably. The Kundalini is said to be in the form of a snake in the belly roaring with energy. This unsurpassed energy is dormant in everyone and can be awakened only after meditation and single-minded devotion to God. The Kundalini or the jyothi rises from the naabhi ie, belly, to the forehead in stages on the levels of meditation and purification one has in his life. When a person rises the Kundalini sakthi to his forehead he has an aura about him and his eyes shine. The person who attains this state is said to know the present, future and the past and also knows who God is. This is the most blissful state for any human being and I think this is what Bharathiyar would also have desired and has mentioned it in his poem.

As I said before, I like your kuNdalini interpretation too and stay open to it (my Mom always talks about the kuNdalini shakti and the aura). I think you & I are interpreting the song on parallel lines as a spiritual love (devotnl.) song, while aruLarasan's point of view is that it is a purely sensual love song. As I've said before, I wish we knew what specifics Bharadhi had in mind. Once I find out, I'll let you know.
