Maniratnam who revolutionized tamil movies with his best efforts like Mounaragam, Nayakan, Agninatchathram, Iruvar, Roja etc. recently come out with Kannathil Muthamittal.
Everybody Nayagan was a lift from God Father and he used some of the scenes from GF for his agninatchathram as well.
I thought Kannathil Muthamittal is his original thought alas its inspired from "Secrets and Lies"
British movie.

Are you kidding!
Just 1 line in the entire review makes it an inspiration?

Nope its not a one liner. I am talking about the movie. Secret and Lies was nominated for 1997 Oscars Best Actress category. It had great reviews from everyone and its a hit too.
I just gave you the review for us to know the fact.

I've seen "Secret and lies" at the wellington film festival and Kannthil muthamitaal recently.
"Secret and lies" is more of a comedy with the main protaganist, who makes contact with her maternal mother upon discovering the truth when her adoptive mother passes away.
all the family skeletons in hiding begin to appear.
In Mani ratnam's interview had acknowledged that his inspiration for Kanathil Muthamittal was from an article in TIME magazine, regarding a young Korean girl who was in search of her mother.
anyway shouldn't we be discussing something like this in another Forum rather than this ?

Ravana, this aint new to our so called GREAT tamil film makers. Many movies had been done with the "INSPIRATION" from english movies, some are very greatly inspired such that u can identify frame to frame coincidents. To name a few,
SOORYAPAARVAI - ARJUN - is from THE PROFESSIONAL
ANDRU PEITHA MAZHAYIL - SARATHBABU - is from FATAL ATTRACTION
AVVAI SHANMUGI - KAMAL - is from MRS.DOUBTFIRE
12B - SHYAM - is from SLIDING DOORS
The list could be bigger...

Saran, adding to ur list, a couple more fairly recent ones:
Dosth (*ing Sarath Kumar) - Double Jeopardy
Kandukonden Kandukonden - Sense & Sensibility
btw, how is this related to the music, Ravana?

Well,if Kannathil Muthamittal is inspired from "Secrets & lies" then I think I can say "Harrison's Flowers" has been inspired from "Roja".

:-) good qn kaushik. i've wondered tat before.
maybe puthiya mugam was inspired by something else which also inspired john woo to do face/off. jus a theory.

funny isnt it. if puthiya mugam had been released after face/off, we'd have all happily concluded tat it was indeed inspired by face/off.

Puthiya Mugam is inspired from "Shattered". Shattered is a great movie with second grade hollywood actors like Tom Beringer.

some genius here mentioned face-off and puthiya mugam.
did that genius even pause for a second to think about atleast 1 similarity between the two movies.
i cannot come up even 1 similarity...
unless the genius is not really a genius ...and does not know what happened in face-off was not plastic surgery..
even if it was .. mentioning plastic suregry in 2 movies doesnt amount copy.. its like saying if in 2 different movies, if the hero wears his pant over his underwear.. it can be called a copy...

Bharath, dont be so condescending.
I know tat Kaushik and I were not the only ones who have thought tat after watching face/off. Doesnt mean we're all dumb and ur the only genius here. btw, i can't speak for kaushik, but i do not use the term 'inspired' interchangeably wit 'copied'.

i saw the movie recently. inspired or not, the movie is really wonderful. initially i had an apprehension that like uyirae he would have commercialised a sensitive issue. but, km is an in-depth movie portraying the suffering of eazham tamilians and the child's as well.
it is better than bombay. i wonder how mr is able to get top-notch technicians for his films continuously. who is this ravi k. chandran? he is the second hero of this movie (mr is definitely the first hero).
a word about music. arr has excelled in bgm. very vibrant and very forceful. the movie's imapact is greatened by his bgm. the song (the only song!), nenjil dhil dhil is so sweet.
ahahi, nandha, km... it is surprising that tamil cinema is giving such meaningful movies, much like earlier malayalam movies!

Mani - has always been a copycat.... his movie paghal nilavu sucks big time - nayagan is good but there is a blunder in that too (in one scene where kamal comes in ambulance even before he bought them (apparently he buys them in the next scene)..... he is good in publicity and since rajni/kamal were there, he made a name for himself....
he wanted to different from others by taking the movie in complete darkness..... which later became his style.

One thing about the KM posters...it reminded me of Episode 1 : Phantom Menace posters....a long shot of a child with a back pack. MR has always been inspired by Spielberg and George Lucas...remember the "Star Wars" song in Anjali...maybe Anjali itself is inspired from ET...some scenes in Anjali remind you of situations from the touching book "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee..anybody read that ?

KM is a well made movie with good aspects from a lot of movies.. It's no wonder that directors like manirathnam and shankar are inspired by the directors from the west... Someone told me the KM has a lot of scenes inspired from Artificial Intelligence.. Well may be or may not be... What we need is a good movie with 3 hours of entertainment.. doesnt matter whether it is copied or not.... that's what Manirathnam has given us in KM... All kamal hassan's movie have been inspired by english movies... The list like... what about bob, mrs. doubtfire, tootsie could be extended to The principal - Nammavar,
9 to 5 - Magalir mattum etc.... Similarly MR has lots of inspirations... nayagan had lots of scenes like god father, Anjali => ET, Thiruda thiruda => run etc... but wherent these great hits... Just becos of the fact that there were some similarities and inspirations, you cant say that these directors Suck..... MR might have knowingly or unknowingly taken scenes which from other movies.... If its a known inspiration MR is trying to atleast share the good scenes from other movies in a single movie which is a good aspect for him as well as for the audience... If its an inspiration without his knowledge, he has to be appreciated for producing such remarkable scenes which can be compared to hollywood standards..
and for the similarity between face off / pudhiya mugam... is there any similarity between the two movies except for the surgery.... in face off , john woo had chosen two actors with the similarity to the extent that eyebrows & ears of nicolas cage and travolta match.... whereas our standards produced vineeth being a guy of 5.5 feet getting transformed to a guy who is 6.5 feet... and what about the physique....

For whoever mentioned, MR is copy cat and his movies suck big time,
MR may not be the greatest director but still he is one of the good directors in the contemporary period. He definitely has his own way of narrating the stories, he is one of the poineers in the whole Indian cinema who very effectively uses cinematography and music as the big supports of the entire movie right from his first movie "pallavi anu pallvi", I have missed only his second movie ( Unaru - malayalam) and Dils e/Uyire so far. Eventhough he probably inspired from some western movies, invariably he comes out with better movies than the majority of the directors in this age. Some of his minor negative points are repitetiveness of sequences, sometimes coming out with sequences which are some times unrealistic ( yet he delivers them relatively better than other directors). He has come out of the side track (comedy) sequences atleast in the last few movies, ( Pagal Nilavu' G mani and the other guy, I Koyil-i think G Mani/Sendhil, Geethanjali: D shanthi, and that telugu comedian, Agni Natchatram: VKR and Janaka Raj, Anjali, the teenagers romance sequences),
well compare to most of the new and other total absurd directors, including RS Ravikumar, you think these guys have given one good movie ( exeption Sethu :Bala, his Nandha, atleast IMHO is average but better than the f****d up movies like Red, khushi( please pardon my * language, these movies were indeed irritating) ( ayya paamarargale ethanai village le idhu maadhiri ponnunga irukkanga, ethane college le idu maadhiri nadakudhu, comedynra perle, total nonsense by Vivek, this is where Kamal's comedies although inspired definitely are better, especially with his acting talents)
What happened to Mahendran , BR, now, the so called paamarargal rejected these great directors for what reason? Kadal Pookkal, for ex. if the same were to have been released in eighties it would have been easily a super duper hit ( ofcourse with the grand BGM of IR), but apparently there were no distributors ready to release this movie , inspite of winning national award for best screenplay ( may be that is one reason), although this is one of the rare instances where the right person has been awarded by the selection jury. Kadal Pookkal may not be the best movie of BR still it is much better than the horrible movies produced with Vijaykanth, Arjun, even the so called super star ( style , Charishma nra perle innum ehanai naal tamil nattu makkalukku alva vo theriyale, the same actor's old movie with Mahendran and some other movies are still some of the best movies by him), Vijay, Prashanth, Ajith.
When people come out with a difference try to appreciate and encourage atleast the other technical aspects of the movie, try to grow a little bit, instead of crying watching movies based on old tamil such as "Vaanathu pole" ( it is not a mile stone in tamil cinema, in story, action, music , direction, many such movies have come and gone, and this movie was not worth such a big hit) or super duper police roles of Vijay kanth ( Ex: Vallarasu, .... give us a break, and this is how you get a break from time to time by MR and other talented directors)
Which director in Indian Cinema has come out with movies based on totally different concepts ( ex: Mouna Raagam,Roja, KM)?
Idhu maadhiri aazhunga ( assuming the people who can post on DF like this are educated to atleast a good extent) indha maadhiri Pot belly Vijay kanth and ghosti yai encourage panradunaale daan, they are still churning out stupid movies.
The crap about saying, oh you can not talk like an elite , urbanite.... look at the villagers who like ordinary stories ( not MR kind of stuff) etc... doesn't make sense either, how many accepted Kadal Pookkal?, even village people seems to be corrupted with the pseudo fashions and unrealistic things. So please grow up people.
For some reasons two ther movies which I liked in the past few years are
1. Vaali ( although the concept could have been narrated in a better way)
2. 12 B ( till I learnt it was heavily inspired by " Sliding Doors)
Sorry for the big digression, I still advise the EX MR fans and non MR fans to just give a try, watching this well crafted movie. Ravi K chandran, was the cameraman for KK if I am not wrong, who is a good friend of Rajiv Menon, apparently worked in one other movie of Mani.
( appa...... PRO velai mudinjuchu...)
Disclaimer: I have no relations with Madras Talkies or MR

When MR wanted to MAKE MONEY FOR HIMSELF he produced his first movie Satryan starring the same pot belly Vijaykanth
KM was/is good. Accepted. But still imho, kutty and azhagi were much better. Regarding KadalPookal i too felt the same. if it had been earlier with IR, it would have been a bigger hit.
Prabhudas, neenga panna PRO velaiya "Kutty" padathiRku paNNirukalam :(
