All of us would have had the experience of having been emotionally affected (moved, exhilirated, etc.) upon listening to a song (some song or the other). So, why don't we put down the songs that have affected us so, and also mention what feelings the song(s) evoked in us, upon hearing it...
Frankly speaking, I got this idea during the discussions with Vijay, Suresh, Srikanth, etc. in the thread, Raja Should Retire ?! :)

The songs could have had an impact not just because of the music, but due to other factors too, like lyrics, picturization, situation in the movie, etc. So, such instances are also welcome to figure here...

My vote goes to "uchi vagundeduthu pichi poo vacha kili" from rosapoo ravikaikari. Ippakuda indha patta ketta mansu oru madhiriya ayidum. Great lyrics and picturization. The song fits aptly for the situation in the movie.

This posting is not really about how a song fits the emotional mood of a film, but about how a song stirred some emotions in me.
A couple of weekends ago, I was driving to Chicago. It was dusk. The setting of the sun had left some brilliant patches of pink splotched on an otherwise gray sky. And the music that was playing on my system was "Ponmaalai Pozhuthu..."
The lines "Vaana Magal Naanugiraal Veru Udai Poonugiraal" seemed to suddenly come alive before my eyes. The lyrics and the extraordinary music fit the scene before me so well that I was incredibly moved. It was as if the song was written and composed for that instant.
Sometimes, music has the power to appeal at such an intimate level... even to remember the way this song was picurized in the film seems such a travesty!

Haay everyone ! I lke this topic . Of all the emotional songs my vote goes to "Ammavendrazhaikaatha. Uyirillaye.." Even now when I hear this song, 'athu ennavo onnu' solla teriyalaippaa. Such an impact. And Ilayaraja has used 'kalyani' so beautifully to compose this song. Kalyaniya puzhinjju juiceaaa koduthirukkaru. Great. And picturization of the song is also touching (film: Mannan).

very nice topic viswa, hope this thread continues for a long time. First song that comes to my mind is "Kanne KalaimaaNe" from Moonram Pirai.I cannot imagine anyone who does not have tears in his or her eyes after coming out watching this movie and the song plays a very big role for that. The lyrics are so perfect for the song, it makes me hear the song so many times especially at night when you go to bed and there is a hush around you.

songs that have evoked emotions in me:
1. illamayenum poongatru:
i cannot describe the feelings i experience.
iam just standstill and stunned ,lost completely
when i hear this song.
2. putham puthu kaalai:
the first interlude is simply amaing.i feel like iam running in an open field with a lot of small lambs.perhaps if i were bharathiraja i would have picturised the song with radha in that way.
3. poomalai vaangivanthan :
the interludes in these songs would be perhaps in my top three.the interlude alone have made me listen to these songs atleast 10 times consecutively to the extent my cassette tape would be eroded. the violin in the second stanza have moved me to tears when i listened to the song in my eighth grade. I strongly feel that since i had learned carnatic music when i was a kid, that had perhaps helped me to appreciate this song better.for an ordinary music lover or a raaja fan, perhaps this song would not be as appealing.
4. ennulle ennule -valli
this is another song where i cannot once again describe my feelings, except that iam also like the heroine in the film, left in a trance.
5. thendral vanthu theendum-avathaaram
ditto as above.
6.uravugal thodarkathai-aval appadithaan
this song has more to do with nostalgic memories which goes right back to , u won't believe, 1st grade! fantastic interlude, the first one.
7.thaalatudhe vaanam - kadal meengal
perfect fit with the situation.i feel myself sailing in the sea with the dusk rays on me.
another feeling which i experience is that of having a warm cup of wonderful hot filter coffee(which i miss here in the U.S!) on a bright sunny noon. TERRIBLE SONG! the background voice shouting 'koria koria' in the first interlude fits the song and the situation like a glove.hats off to the maestro!

i would also like to thank viswa for such a good topic.it was me who was talking a lot about these emotional songs in each of my arguments against srikanth and others. people who criticize raja can be referred to this site in the future. also people looking for some good songs to record in a cassette can avail this opportunity!

Viswa
Gem of a topic. I tried creating some off-beat topics, as innovative as Raja's music, however, those have touched some wrong chords. Parvayillai.
My pavorite (not Pavarotti) but favorite, would be that which brings back sweet memories and also makes me feel extremely loving about Mother Nature. For instance, as I walked down Numbal Village off Poonamalle or as I walked near Avadi, I am speaking of Chennai , 15 years back, or just visit the virgin Besant Nagar, one song that really makes me part of the landscape is the song from Kazhugu:
Oru Poovanathilu, Sugam Kullu Kulunguthu
Vandu Then Kudiguthu, Manam Palla Parakuthu
Then, that bit of mandolin music ( I am dead here, Saar)
Oru Solai Vannathiley, Sugam Kodi Yennangale
Oru Poovanathilu (forgive the lyrics)
This song is my most favorite solo along with Yeh Orayiram (Kalyanaraman) because these two songs have the most innocent melodies, speaks of the beautiful sunny day, perhaps in Avadi , 15 years back or a young Numbal Village, etc..
Complete songs that gave me great joy when I spend time alone.

Viswa,
A great Topic after a long time in TFM DF . I can talk abt this for hours together.
The first song that comes to my mind is
Putham puthu Kaalai -- Alaigal Oivathilai ! Oh Man what a song ! Any time I hear it, I get sort of nostalgic, spirits go up and my mood becomes very light! This song evokes a lot of emotion and I cannot explain in words. Every time, I hear this I always swear !" Mottai, Nee theivayamaiyaa.?? Also SJ's Voice - ithus mathiri paada vera yaarala mudiyum.?? Some times this song moves me so much that I am mesmerised ..
#2.Kanden yengum .. Kaatrinile varum geetham ..
This is another song which makes u feel that u are in some desolated/haunting place and u are being surrounded by a mist of unknown . SJ again... Tremendous.
#3. keladi kanmani ... puthu puthu arthangal.
This songs makes me cry - especially this song has a great effect when i listen to it while travelling- I don't know why , but especially the chorus Humming during the interlude is very moving
#4. Thenpaandi Seemaiyile ... Nayakan.
This immediately brings the picture of Kamal crying in front of his son's dead body - Evokes very senti feelings and sinks in a very depressing mood. I am sure if I listen to this song even after winning a US$100 million , i will become depressed. That's the magic of mottai
#4. O Papa lali -- Ithayathai thirudaathe.
#5. Maalaiyeil Yaara -- Chathriyan
#6. Siru ponmani asaiyum --- kallukkul Eeeram.?
#7. ninaivo Oru paravai - Sikappu rojakkal.(especially the lines ..rojakkalil panneer thuli..)
the list goes on on .. will write again later

I would rate this topic as No: 1 so far in DF. I appreciate Viswa and 'thanks a ton' to those who inspired him to start this. I have always been imagining about starting a topic that will portray the uniqueness of Raaja and I am jealous that Viswa have stolen that word 'emotion' before me which will effectively describe what "Rajaadhi Raja' is all about. I wish this topic should soon be moved to permanent topics and it should continue forever just like our 'Everlasting Supremo IlayaRaaja'. If Ravi agrees with me, kindly move it permanent topic.
Thumbrule>> We may not want to get ourselves emotional along the way, if somebody criticises IR or any other MD. We may not want this topic also to be IR devotees Vs non-IR fans "battlefield". I wonder any soul in TFM be a non-IR fan anyway.
Head start by Vijay and Nithin...
Cheers!

Great topic. I am reminded of an episode which IR himself wrote long time back in a magazine. It was during the recording of the song "Maada Un Kovilil" sung by S.Janaki. As Janaki was singing the orchestra suddenly stopped playing. IR was furious. When he went in and asked what was the matter, one of the instrumentalist replied, " We are so moved by this song that we listening to it instead of playing along". IR then considered it as one of the greatest compliments he had received. BTW, can someone tell me which movie is this song from. My guess is it is from Pagalil Oru Eravu.
As far as giving songs that emotionally touch you I would rank Vishwanathan (& Ramamoorthy) up there along with IR. One of my all time favourites is "Kalangalil Aval Vasantham". The opening music is also so good that it gives me a great pleasure just to listen to the opening. The feeling is undescribable. The lyrics as great.
Another song of MSV which toouches me is "Nilave Ennidam Nerungathe" from Ramu. This is based on Bageshree. This ragam itself has the capacity to move you to tears. It is used so wonderfully by MSV. Infact in a recent interview PBS said that he couldnt reproduce even 10% of what MSV had sung for him !!! I guess PBS was being modest. (For those interested in classical/semi classical stuff check out the Bageshree sung by Bombay Jayashree in the tape title "Listeners Choice". The song is Kanden Kanden. I havent yet seen anybody who has not been moved by this song")
Another song of MSV which comes to mind is "Mouname Parvaial". Again by PBS. Excellent tune. Excellent lyrics. As a combination MSV/Kannadasan were fantastic. But isnt that stating the obvious.
I consider the music of Karnan as one of the milestones of TFM. Infact in all the interviews he gave after he became popular, IR used to refer to the music of Karnan to say that MSV was a great composer. Every song is a gem. The one that really moves me is "Kannuke Kulam Eedhu". Susheela. What a voice. What clarity and what diction. In fact, in the Ananda Vikatan which I got today, ARR has claimed that he likes Susheela's voice best. Couldnt agree with him more. There is another superb song from Karnan "Kanngal Enge". This also has the capacity to move you. Similarly "Ullathi Nalla Ullam" . This based on the raga "Chakravagam". The reason I consider Karnan as one of the greatest soundtrack of TFM is that every song touches you emotionally. I think these songs are proof enough that MSV is really up there on the top when it comes to provide music which touches you emotionally.
The other MD who had given some soul stirring songs is K V Mahadevan. Since most of his songs are in Telugu I cannot write about all of them. One song in Tamil which touches me in particular is the song " Solla Solla Inikuthada" from Kandan Karunai.
IR also has given lot of such songs. I will post these soon.

1. Uravenum pudhiya vaanil - Nenjathai Killathe
2. Kanmaiye kaadhal enbadhu - 6 to 60
3. Mouname nenjil naalum nee ezhudum - Movie?
4. Andha nilaavathaan naan - Mudhal Mariyadhai
5. Kaadhalin deepam ondru - Thambikku Endha Ooru?
6. Nee oru kodi malar koodi - Movie?
7. Poovil vandu koodum - Kaadhal Oviyam
8. Konji konji alaigal oda - Veera
9. Idhayam oru kovil - Idhaya Kovil
10. Andhi mazhai - Raajapaarvai

By the way, are all these tuned by IR? What a
