  I found the following paragraph in an article on the making of the movie, Meera, with M. S. Subbulakshmi. What does the writer mean when he says that "kaatriniley varum geetham" became a metaphor in the tamil language? Metaphor for what?
  
  The paragraph is:
  Many songs became hits and the most famous of them all, " Kaatriniley Varum Geetham" ( lyrics-Kalki ) is an immortal melody of Indian cinema. . . . Indeed the first line became a metaphor in Tamil language.

  think kotta pakku is in the raga anandha bhairavi,same as the kaattu muyalukku.

  Varaha nadhi kari oram is mostly yamun kalyan with traces of Behag(Dheen karunakarane nataraja!!!).....
  Vaaraoyo vennilave is raag Sudhadhanyasi,
  vaseegara is mostly Kalyani(charanams) I guess.....probably not pure kalyani too but I cudn't make out any Natabairavi out of that song except for tha pallavi parts

  u are right.vaseegara is not kalyani,it is a kind of natabhairavi.sounds like the varnam 'viriponi'.
  for sure cannot be kalyani.

  IK, If I were to make a guess I would say "antha sivagami" is close to Pilu, the raga in which "maine shaayad tumhen" from Barsaat Ki Raat is, although I might wait for IR's opinion :-)this song also reminds me of several other hindi songs, one relatively new song from 90s that just escapes me now and "kaali ghata" by Asha

  In "sikkaadha sittonnu kaiyil vandha" from Sedhu, i find usage of Ri2 & Da2 in avarohanam, with sudhadhanyasi notes (Sa Ga2 Ma1 Pa Ni2 Sa)in aarohanam. That makes it "Sa Ga2 Ma1 Pa Ni2 Sa" in aarohanam and "Sa Ni2 Da2 Pa M1 Ga2 Ri2 Sa" in avarohanam. So i trust it is ABHERI. Can u guys clarify? My friend says it is pure sudhadhanyasi and there is no usage whatsoever of Ri2 & Da2. Well?

  Definitely,Shuddha Dhanyasi-nnu sollamudiyaadu.(IMO)
  It does clearly show Ri and Dha.
  In fact,Ri appars in the very 1st line,subtly though-SaSaSa SaSaSa SaSaSa-RiGaaaRi...
  Also,"sorga ulagam..":SaRiNiSaGa...
  So,I wud say it is Abheri.
  But again,if its Abheri,Ri cannot come in the aarohanam,i.e ascending order,but it does,in the 1st line that I've mentioned above.i.e,I feel the prayogam SaRiGa(shud be SaGa instead) shudn't be there,but its there-so there again is a point to say it isn't Abheri purely.
  So,my conclusion:adultrated(not to a large extent though) Abheri,but surely not ShuddhaDhanyasi.

  thank god, at last i got a reply...Sindhuja, initially, self had same doubt abt aarohanam. But try playing it slowly again. It does not use Ri2/Dha2 in aarohanam. The first line, as i find, is SaSaSa SaSaSa SaSaSa-GaaaRi, and not SaSaSa-RiGaRi. Infact, the soul of the song is built around ABHERI's "Sa (Ri2) Ga2" and "Pa (Dha2) Ni2" usage. Will u let me know, once u have tried it again?

  Sindhuja and IR_Fan: I heard that song briefly. You are right about the usage of Ri and dha. But the song as such does not have any strong traces of Aabheri. On the other hand, there are tons of SD prayogas. I would say, it is a song meant to be in SD with a bunch of "other" notes... Also, Ri and Dha are used very sparingly in the main song itself!
