All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
On a positive note a great achievement and a commendable recognition for her service. But are we going overboard.
There have been a great many artists from TFM and TF who have'nt received even a Padma shri.
Why are'nt we even protesting this? Last year Ismail Durbar(Hope I got his name right) got a national award for Hum Dil De....! . We have been mere bystanders in this process. We can pour a lot of rhetoric but all this will be a waste if we do'nt have our voices heard.
Should we act now? Maybe a representation or some kind of demonstration to show our protest.
Every conceivable institution in India has been compromised for political gains.
Or is it just that we guys do'nt have the spine!

Bharat Ratna for Lata is an appreciable one. She deserves that. She got introduced at the age of 17, She is 70 now. Her contributions to HFM are remarkable. Let's congratulate!

Fliflo ur are right . But it also makes me wonder what good this national award and all when some real talented people go unappreciated for how about Mr.IR so far no hon award hs been given to him did he get Padma Shree?

I remember:
Sardar Patel got Bharat Ratna after MGR and Rajiv Gandhi. What do you say about that? Once ki. aa. pe. viswantaham (at the age of 90) told, "I feel one should get name and fame, while they are living. They also feel happy and their worthiness." Lata has made remarkable achievments and it is good that govt. is giving her the award.
Regading IR, I can't say how much happy I would've been if he was awarded. I hope IR still has time and he will definitely get one or other award. But for that I can't say what they are doing for Lata is incorrect.

to date. He should have been honoured long back.

First up all tell me whether awards on based on merit in India?
Eg: Sivaji did not get award from our govt, where MGR/Rajini got.
General criteria to become eligible for our govt award, you
1) need to have political influence
2) need to have clout among govt officials
3) belong to minority community
4) Being a Tamilian amounts to disqualification.
5) sometimes merit may also be considered.
6) Finally if at all an award is proposed to IR or any Tamilian to that matter, the first person to poke hurdle will be a Tamilian.
Like Sivaji, IR should never worry about awards. In fact he should reject it if at all awarded to him.

TFM rasigan, Fliflo and STS:
Lata Mangeshkar definitely deserves a BhartRatna. She needs to be congradulated definitely.
IR had already made Vaiko sound his opinion in the parliment and Vallal Perumal in the state assembly (?nonPolitical) as per paper news during his symphony felicitations.
Please do not forget that there are still seniors before IR without a Padma award. You left out TMS, MSV, KVM, etc., in your list.
Smt.Bhanumathi Ramakrishna, the legend, Viswanathan Anand, Dr.Lsubramaniam, Thootatharani, SPB for that matter have been considered. Are they unfit? STS.
Awards are honoured only when it is designated on deserving. Sivaji or IR may not consider awards important as STS, but, that itself may be a reason why IR is not awarded. But,no fool can say that AR Rahman is not fit for Padmashri. For the furore created by the success of VandeMatharam in India and Abroad reaching nook and corner, he should have been awarded with a PadmaVibushan.
Just for the sake of IR, do not criticise the sentiments of National awards. For even if awarded IR is sure to come out with his 'Thathuva Ponmozhigal'.
IR fans allow stop giving IR a mental trial and allow him to think and make some new tunes for us to enjoy.
There were so many people waiting for an oppurtunity and break with IR. And now it is his turn to wait for an oppurtunity to get awarded. Time Varattum!
Like the way IR never found to honour new tamil voices and talents in his period, the award committee would not have found him fit at present.
Oppurtunism can get back only Opputunism as reward.
Iam glad that IR fans are getting the Tamil spirit which 'lacks' in the great IR. Can you name or number out the tamils introduced by IR? (Dont bring in KR,Bhavatharini &YSR). I know it is difficult!
Dont talk Tamil spirit when you want an award and nationalism when you are in a position to award. Even politicians do not do that. Why should a musician like IR and his fans?

It is a great year for all MUSICIANs. Two great doyens Lataji and Pt.Bismillah Khan have been honoured with the highest BharathaRatna. Only two musicians and no one else. A proud moment to cherish by all musicians, as if it was their own award.
Be it north or south, Tamil or non tamil, minority or non minority, political or non political,FC-BC-MBC-SC OR ST, a PURE soul with TRUE spirit on their language and their soil will definitely get its worthy due. That is the way one can consider A.R.Rahman, Lalgudi Jayaraman, Dr.L.Subramaniam - the first violin soloist to compose symphony etc. Iam sure these people do not hail from President K.R.Narayans place or community.
Awards should be offered and not 'asked for'. That is the spirit maintained by seniors, most of whom have never seen a national cinema award too, despite their laudable Life time services, breathing cinema in and out.
Some of the postings sounds jealousy! Things happen the way it should happen! Jealousy kills!
We have to be magnanimous.

LM deserves a Bharat Ratna for her contributions. No question about that. But, do you think IR's contributions were any less? However, as STS says, sometimes, all these awards are not based on merit. You need to have some political clout to get these awards. Amitab Bachan is getting a Padma Bhushan; India's best actor as of now, Kamal Hassan, hasn't got one. I think the government should not give any awards to IR. Rather, an award should be given in IR's name to people who have contributed to music and that should be the nation's topmost award for music. That is the only way left for the government to honour this genius. Any other awards given to him only adds more value to the award - not to IR.

Fliflo - Talk about the befitting criterias for National awards alone in this forum. Or say some thing like SM as an IR fanatic.

Bhava got introduced after 22yrs of IRs service. Then it should be her age. How about Motta Maadi and Dori Dori Dommakka dori with their names in the cassestes. Were the kids 22 years then too.
