What a soothing melody, and what a melliflous rendition by Susheela and AM Raja!
In today's cacophony, such simple melodies are our only saviours.

bb: Nice song. Good to hear A.M.Raja. In my college days I used to sing a lot of AMR songs earning the title of AMR of the hostel. Friends can exaggerate! Nothing like those four years. Thanks for bringing back old memories.

Hello, after a long time… with belated DeepavaLi greetings :-O)
As my big boss is out of country, I shall try independently to air my views :-O)
Going in reverse direction of last 2 weeks!!
Wk 2 / Fri - nyAn nyAn pAdaNum from poonthaLir
Normally Jency receives brick-bats for her so-low Tamizh ucharippu. In SOFri, she is very much at ease with her own-land-language. Even arrows freely flow at her for the nAsal-ful rendering. Whatever, enakkennavO, Jency has a different voice and there is some uniqueness. Otherwise IR summa pAttu koduthiruppArA? If am not wrong, she would enclose at least 90% hit songs from her song-account, of course a big THANKS to IR’s mayakkufying rAja rAgAs :-O)
I have watched the song sequence of SOFri sometime back. Sujatha in her native costume was also at ease and jelled well with Jency’s thooya Malayalam :-O)
Wk 2 / Thu - malarum vAn nilavum from Mahakavi Kalidas.
Mahakavi KalidAs was released in 1966, if I am correct. Whereas 'Oru ThAi MakkaL' was out in 1971. One would wonder whether SOThu and the great number “kaNNan endhan kAdhalan kaNNil Adum mAyavan” from OTM were recorded on the same day !!!!! Ditto “gaNNeer” and pakka theLivAna kural of Susila. Terrific power of the voice, I would say.
She sang both the charaNams of SOThu shedding immense energy and effort; However when she returns to pallavi, she would never get tired !!!
In the same movie, there is another grand chain of pieces, starting with "Kalai magaL enakkoru AaNai ittAL”. On LP, it is a single bunch. But in movie, each piece was used in different and apt situation, to depict the KALidas-in padaippugaL. Susila owned two gems… “Gangai karai konda peru vamsam” to introduce Mahakavi’s Raghu vamsam and “kAdhal maNam konda pAsam” to launch “mEha sandEsam”… both worth great listening + watching L. Vijayalakshmi’s graceful dance for Sowcar’s lip-movements.
Wk 2 / Tue - andhi mayanguthadi from Parthiban kanavu
What a fabulous control over voice!! Madai thirandha veLLam pola, kuLirchiyAna but ganamAna kural vaLam.
MLV is gigantic in many (almost all)…, though that many were more or less for dances (Esp for Padmini). To quote a few… Adum aruL jothi, kalayOdu pirandhadhu uNmai (terrific song from MannAdhi mannan) etc
Bit deviation…. MLV had given an exclusive thillAnA (swarAs alone) for a Hindi movie with a tint of Hindustani… forgot the movie name :-( Normally male dancers prefer male voice only for their demo’s. But son (??) of dancing couple Dhananjeyan and Shantha Dhananjeyan, used MLV’s thillAnA during a classical-show along with his group of around 20 co-male-dancers; this was a different catch which received a great applause at the end.
Wk 2 / Tue - amaidhiyAna nadhiyinilE Odam from aaNdavan kattaLai.
There are few songs with four & more # of charaNams. SOTue is among such diamonds :-O) As bb mentioned, the prelude is excellent. Somehow I feel that TMS strains when he stretches thennaiLankeetrinilE… As a lover of this song, I just wait to join Susila for that magnificiant start-off humming after 2nd charaNam.
In 4th charaNam, listen to that repeat of Andhiyil mayangi vizhum kAlayil theLindhu vidum. The sandam between vizhum and kAlayil is mesmerizing, you know!! Also listen to the pathos version of 'amaidhiyAna'. You will forget yourself at the repeat of nadhiyinilE nadhiyinilE nadhiyinilE…!
In 1995 @ Naradha Gana sabha, the same pair sung SOTue as part of Gangai Amaran’ orchestra. GA brought the same originality in the prelude and to some extent Susila too re-produced her silky humming !!
Wk 1 / Thu - kodi yEththi vaippOm from pithaamagan
Havn’t seen yet PithaMagan. Is this song part of Kovil Thiru vizha? Tried to raise my eyebrow but no luck… there were fantastic such songs by IR… amman kovil kizhakkAlE (Sakalakala vallavan’s title song ?? kEtkum podhu adhirum). One more from AraNamaNai kiLi… starting with “amman koil kumbam”…
No more grievance :-(
Wk 1 / Wed - iniya thendralE iru kaigaL veesi vaa from amma piLLai.
Pakka xerox-copy of some old tunes. Doubt whether S-G have copied their own ??
SPB did not pay great attention for control of his throat before recording ???? Yet, a mad fan of bAlu, accepting it with a smile. As my big-H always says blindly “aNNa eppidi pAdinAlum nallA than irukkum”, :-O
Wk 1 / Tue - oru padalai from malligai mohini
'MGR' Latha was the heroine paired with Julie vikram… such an atrocious combination :-(
Many musicians would have burnt their talents to produce great numbers…but we feel so pity when we watch the movie/song-seq concerned. In this song, bAlu’s vocal talent was amazing; still it turned to be a garbage for such a poor story’ed movie, set on the same lines of Aayiram jenmangaL.
Wk 1 / Tue - thendralukku endrum vayathu from payaNam.
One of the few movies wherein Jaichitra paired with VijayakumAr. JC gave a splendid performance in this movie; she fails in her love affair with VK at the end. Fatafat, Srikanth and Major gave good support. Don't know why it did not cross 2 weeks of run :-(
On the harmony of the song, it is not so mediocre? Sorry, In my view, if the same song lyrics and same SPB (or even Charan) are resourced to any upcoming MDs, am sure, they would do much better melody.
Okay, Bye for now !!

Classic SOTD, a song that conjures up vistas of old-fashioned romance, the pangs of love whispered so shyly, the decency that cloaked the inner most declarations—wonderful song! AMR and PS add such tender, caressing touches to the soft captivating melody composed by Chalapathi Rao.
Thathineni Chalapathi Rao (1920-1994) was, like MBS, a sympathizer of communism, and an active member of IPTA. His works in Tamil are few, unlike his numerous Telugu films. However, even in those very few Tamil films, (though he did lift some popular Hindi tune), he has left behind some spellbinding original melodies that lesser composers cannot dream of in a lifetime. ‘Thaen unnum vandu’ (Amaradeepam/ AMR/PS), ‘Thunbam soozhum neram’ (Amaradeepam/Jikki), ‘Ragasiyam kelada’ (Koodi Vaazhnthaal Kodi Nanmai/SJ), ‘En ullathaiye kollaikkonda’ (Koodi Vaazhnthaal Kodi Nanmai/TMS), ‘Urundodum vaanil’ (Punarjenmam/PS), ‘Thediduthae vaanam ingae (Uththami Petra Rathinam/ PBS (‘What a sweet song’ wondered a nostalgic PBS
when we reminded him of this one) and PS versions) are creations that will glitter on forever in the annals of tfm. Even the single song he composed (at Sridhar’s request) for Yaar Paiyan- ‘Thandhai yaaro thaayum yaaro’(PS) is a lingering lullaby.
Mathuram Pictures’ Meenda Sorgam-1960 is of course, the dazzling jewel in Chalapathi’s crown, at least as far as tfm is concerned. ‘Poetry in celluloid’—this is what Raj Kapoor, himself a devotee of such tragic love stories, is said to have exclaimed when Sridhar screened it for him. But the film was not a commercial success, Chalapathi’s splendid score notwithstanding.
Two other songs from Meenda Sorgam that deserve mention are : ‘Thulli thulli oduthu’- Jikki and ‘Singara thoppilae’- Jikki & SJ.

Does "thesulaavudhe" have an original Hindi version? I vaguely remember Chinmayi singing a similar sounding song when she was a judge in Sapthaswarangal. of course, I might be confusing it with "Kannathil muthamittal" which sounds similar to the charanams of "thesulavudhe".
