Another Tidbit I remembered, we met a person from advertising in India, he was saying that ARR has worked with RD Burman on some BGM. Does anyone know anything about this?

well geetha, iam not sure if what iam going to say is true or not.... i remember reading it in kumutham or AV.... ARR had commented that he has'nt listened to IR's music at all (for which IR had commented "chinna chinna aasaaai???? is there a song like that????").... well with just then an entry into the field, if ARR can comment like that, then IR can 100% say what u had said.... nothing wrong in it.... well then like eden says why should we bother about these personal things.... its bound to be there in every human beings..... just take the good stuffs from them and ignore the -ve things....

even i rememeber reading something to that effect. ARR had denied listening to IR's songs and said that his music was not influenced by any one esle's music. srirangam laskhminarayan who has written a series of articles on IR has actually criticised this and has challenged ARR to compose music without the influence of his forefathers. i think it is in either article no. 14 or 15. the artciles are there in shibu's site.

It was KR who said that about chinna chinna Asai.

Mr S,
I beg to disagree. I remember reading that interview or article which said what sabesan said abt chinna chinna aasai. I also remember reading something like IR composing Chinna Chinna Thooral Enna from senthamizh paattu as an answer to the song. Of course history says which song went the farther.

FYI Kamesh,
chinna chinna thooral enna......came far ahead of Roja.(it came in Jan'1992). So there is least of chances that IR would have got into kozhai adi sandai like this. Avar sivanennu irukkar, yethukku intha narathar velai ungallukku.

Swami,
I am 100% sure that Roja released before Senthamizh paatu. Please check it up.

Germans sway to the music of Jackson, Rehman
London, June 30 (Vijay Dutt)
The famous Michael Jackson number We are the world sung by the pop king himself and the mellifluous strains of Satyameva Jayate by noted Indian musical wizard A. R. Rehman swayed a capacity 55,000-strong crowd at an open air concert in Munich, Germany’s most important commercial city.
Sponsored by the Hinduja Foundation to raise funds for the world’s needy children, the nine-hour concert at the Olympic Stadium attracted a large number of music-lovers from Frankfurt and other major cities.
Jackson had appeared for the concert under the aegis of Red Cross and Unesco with the theme, “What more can I give in aid of children”.
The Indian group led by Rehman, however, was a major discovery for many Germans. Rehman proved to be a worthy ambassador of the rich Indian heritage in music and culture.
It was a fascinating experience and very good for creating interest in Indian music and Indian tourism, said Reimer Vocker, a post-graduate in Jazz music from Berlin University. The event attracted wide media attention.
There were in all 20 groups comprising 400 musicians of different schools of music for presenting their repertoire.
The introduction of the Indian component and the fusion of the pop with the Indian classical was the idea of Vinoo Hinduja, daughter of Srichand Hinduja.
Pleased at the response, particularly to Indian music, she said that hopefully her effort to put the country’s music on the world stage would help the music lovers to savour its richness.
Rehman with a group of 20 artistes was given the honour of presenting his events in the last. He literally brought the curtain down with an enthralling package of performances. He synthesised contemporary sound notes with traditional Indian instruments, sarangi, ghatam and manjira.
But, what brought the 55,000 listeners to their feet were Jackson’s rendition of a Sanskrit verse in English and Rehman’s Ekam Satyam. He wore a white dress designed by Manish Malhotra.
Shobhana and Deva, fellow artistes with Rehman, dazzled the audience with dance numbers which were a blend of the classical and the modern.
The choreography by Raju Sundaram and vocal rendering by Rehman created a fascinating ambience. The inclusion of 30 German dancers in the performance was much appreciated.
Others, who participated included the famous Boyzone, Vanessa Mae, Ringo Starr, and the blind Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

What about A R Rahman?
A R Rahman's two films had good songs, Bombay and Roja. But after that, which of his songs has been different? Nobody shouts Vande mataram like he did. And he got Rs 20 million for that! I had sung Vande Mataram which had music by Pannalal Ghosh. It was so soft and nice. After listening to Rahman's version, my wife said it proved that we are going back to the jungle days.

Hi,
Please don't be swayed by what Manna Dey says. these old time Hindi artists. Manna Dey, Lata and the rest of the crowd -- though were great in their days have always constantly critized the changing times. Sure HFM is dead after the Burman Days. But I am sure these people would lament that Indian music is down.
Hardly they see the rise and excellence of music in Tamil films (atleast the pre-Deva days).
I am no fan of ARR, but still once should discard these old timers, who cry loud to any music other than their own times.

Exactly Balaji... I second your statements.
These people "famous old timers" will go hammer and tongs about the present state of music and hows this and hows that..etc. etc.
What they lack is the clarity to think, feel and emote beyond what they have achieved and the sense of apprecitation in "new" trends or fad if you want to call it so.
A constant cliched statement is "see even today, so and so's song is being listened and appreciated".. tell me who does? everything's a passing cloud, a fad... unless you tie it to devotion it will not become a tradition...(am i speaking like T.Rajendar? ;-) ).. what irked me more what Mannadey's statements like... "if I had got into classical music, even i would have performed as good as Bhimsen Joshi etc." ..Yeah, right! after the event even the fool is wise..gasbag!!
