I do not blame him if it was a suicide attempt.
What kind of respect do great signers like him get these days?
Look at the other thread on TMS and see how people are trashing him.
God only can save true singers like him.
I hope TMS is allright.

It's unfortunate that a legend like TMS has to resort to such attempts (assuming that it was a suicide attempt and not his son's version: mistaking spirit for cough syrup) ... Thank God he survived.
I wonder what drove this living legend, a superstar of Tamil music to this?
- Is it because he is financial trouble?
- Is it because his children have not acquired even a fraction of the level of popularity he enjoyed in his hey days?
- Is it because he is not recognised/ felicitated in public functions any more?
- Is it because this ageing singer refuses to accept retirement (Sunset Boulevard syndrome?)
One thought he has retired gracefully after more than 5 decades of service to the music industry.
Whatever the reason, this definitely is a disturbing news!

i am not making any conclusion, but just some logical analysis ....
1) Cough syrups are USUALLY stored in refrigirator..... was the cleaning spirit there too?
2) Cough syrups USUALLY comes in a much smaller container than cleaning spirits....
3) Some Cough syrups DO ACTUALLY have the same smell like cleaning spirit
4) Some Cough syrups DO ACTUALLY have the same color like cleaning spirit
many possibilities are likely.... mistaken, suicide attempt, or even murder attempt..

TMS ranks as one of the three mystical geniuses, other being PJ & TLMaharajan. TMS for me is higher than KJY & SPB, no doubt about the magic of that voice that typified TFM for decades. I think a respected industry would not neglect to honor their icons, legends and stalwarts.

Tomorrow the same thing might happen to even the king(s) of Music...to anybody....let TMS be the exception and not one of the examples.

yesterday i listened to Sun TV news, Vijay News and Jaya News. Only the Sun TV news blew it up as if it were a suicide attempt. Vijay was saying it as an accident so did Jaya. I can understand Sun TV v/s Jaya stuff in reporting TMS' this incident, but do not see any ulterior motive behind Vijay to say it as a mere accident. So probably what Vijay TV (and Jaya) says is true.
Well, now TMS himself has claimed it to be an accident then it shows the colour of Sun TV (ofcourse already in many incidents Jaya's colour is shown).

Siva, in madras, though many houses do have fridge, i think most of them do not store medicines esp. cough syrups(less expensive and less important medicine) in fridge.

TMS doesn't have to make such an attempt at this ripe old age. he has gone through all rough and mild weather conditions. it is true that these days he is disturbed by the gradual deterioration of tamil music in the matter of originality of voice modulation of voice and TAMIL pronunciation. he has achieved tremendous fame during his career. unlike any other playback singer he doesn't know encomium or sycophancy. he was even rebellious wherever necessary. he wasn't scared of his career as a singer. it was indisputably marvellous. he dominated the tamil film world -to the best of my belief-the longest period. we today know SPB dominated for nearly 20 years. KJ shared the domination with SPB for the same period. others have crept in and taken away the domination. but TMS dominated alone for more than 30 years. why should he make a suicide attempt. it's all a cock and bull story. it might ache a veteran singer to see the passing away of the original charm and grace of tamil songs with nothing but a display of musical instrument bringing no harmonious melody to our ears. I wish him long healthy life. quantity of songs count less than quality-he stood for quality.

Hi,
I totally am in agreement with James. For my part I don't perforce listen to any songs post 1985. Tamil film music was at its zenith in the 1950s and 1960s though I gratly admire the period before that too. But now. Its noise, nothing else.

Whatever may be the cause of him drinking spirit, its very unfortunate that great singers like him are totally uncared for in their later days. Another example was C S Jayaraman. As other mentioned, TMS was truly a doyen in TFM. Though his Tamil diction, his masculine (kambeeram) voice, expression are some of the assets of his voice, what I appreaciate the most was his ability to modulate his voice to suit the actor - amazing! One could say whether he is singing for Sivaji or MGR by just listening to the song. This is to be regarded a real plus for a playback singer.
But its nice to note that there are many (esp the ones who have expressed their views above) still appreciate old talent and songs.

MGR and Sivaji are unimaginable without the voice of TMS. They owe 50% of their mass appeal to the tenor of TMS. If MGR and Sivaji can be called "Sagapththam"s then TMS is the "soul" within those.
