Shankar-Ganesh are the second most prolific music composers in tamil, after MS Vishwanathan.
Their works deserve to be analysed.

peeps: that's funny....
SG was like another Deva (copy-cat). He was one of the busiest MDs in MSV/IR period. He managed to give many hit songs and some of them are worth mentioning:
1. romba naalaga enakkoru aasai (what movie?)
2. few songs from movie 'neeya'
3. unnai naan parthadhu (one of SPB's best)
4. megame megame (copied but still a good song)

These are the two MGR movies SG did music, if I remember right. Most songs in both the movies are real good, but I am not sure if they are copied.
For the period they stayed in field, their number of hits are very limited. IMO, Deva is one step ahead even though he is a copycat as well...

Most of the devar films were scored by SG.
His popular songs are
1) Athule meen pidichu - Attukara Alamelu
2) Paruthi Edukkaiyile - Attukkara Alamelu
3) Padungal - Guru
4) Parandalum vidamatten - Guru
5) Naan Vanangukiren - Guru
6) Illangiliye - Shankarlal
7) Yaradhu Sollamal - Nenjamellam Neeye
..
They did their part. Deva is a step ahead because he has no competition. Shankar Ganesh had competition in the form of Giant Illayaraja. We understood the true meaning of Monopoly during IR days.

Both Guru and Shankarlal by IR. Adhane pathen..
How come SG scored such good tunes nnu.

Why be disparaging of S-Gs talents? The gave some fine music for films like Kanni Paruvathile, Neeya, Palaivanachcholai, Aatukara Alamelu, Thangathile Vairam, Thai Mel Aanai, Kannodu Kann, Nenjamellam Neeye, Rajangam, Kannil Theriyum Kadhaigal...
If the intention is to probe the music and diversity of S-Gs contribution to Tamizh films, then it would be only fair to just discuss their work. Comparisons with other MDs are odious, and seldom contribute to a better understanding of the topic at hand.

We don't disparage!! I think Kannil Theriyum Kadhaigal had 5 MDs. I dunno which SG scored for.
I think Naan Unna Nenachen was scored by SG. Naanoru ponnoviyam kanden by IR. I dunno about the rest.

If I am not wrong, music for "Darling Darling Darling" was by SG. Couldn't believe that they can really come up with the mesmorizing song 'Oh Nenje Nee dhaan paadum geethangal"

Recently I watched the film 'Uchakattam', a thriller starring Sarathbabu, Y.G.Mahendren. The music was by Shankar Ganesh.
Was plesantly surprised to notice that it has a hit song 'Sithar kooda pitharaagi buthi maari sellalam, pithar kooda sitharaagi thathuvangal sollalam..'
Good one.

Conceded S-G were not creative like Illai Raaja.
Conceded S-G were not as maestro as was MSV.
But there must be something about them that brought them hundreds and hundreds of movies for
music composition.
Copy-cat, a term used here for the MD's that
copy the tunes of others. But copying is not
always that repugnable. Satyam, mainly the
Telugoo, Kannada music director, copied
most of his routine songs, usually from hindi film music. But whenever it came to classical, religious , emotional songs, he almost always came up with the songs of highest caliber.
I regard him one of the finest composers for
his most impressive classical (carnatic)and emotional, religious compositions,
notwithstanding that he copied blatantly for his ordinary songs.

Thanks Loosu (i feel awkward while telling this name),
For mentioning the MD of uchchakkattam. I was longing to know the MD. siththan kooda OF uchchakkattam is really a nice song. The way it suddenly plunges from this fast step lines into the slow step naan aendhum thaen kiNNam vaazhga vaazhga. I sometimes would confuse the end of this slow step i.e. aennai kollaamal ponaalo sandhoshamae with ada kala, naLinaththai paarthaal naLini OF ada manmadhan rakshikkanum (oru thalai raagam?). Because this song also is of similar type of the uchchakkattam song. I even think that the TR song got its inspiration from this uchchakkattam song.

Someone here mentioned "Megamae megamae" by VJ is one of the copied composition of S-G. This is news to me. The original is in Telugu - "Maeghamaa daehamaa", soothing rendition by SJ, a super hit song in Andhra. The music for this song was composed by a once-upon-a-time busy MDs Rajan-Nagendra. These guys along with Chakravarthy were ruling TeFM until IR came into the picture and literally put everyone else out of business :-)

kaumudi:
both "meghame meghame" and "yaarathu sollamal" are copied from Jagjit Singh's ghazals. the former is TUM NAHIN GHAM NAHIN. I can't recall the other one. A list of copied songs by Shankar Ganesh will run into several pages :-) And I used to formerly think that only North Indian MDs (eg: R D Burman) copy :-)

Kaumudi, some corrections to your posting, to keep the record
straight.
"The music for this song was composed by a once-upon-a-time busy MDs Rajan-Nagendra."
Let us make this "once-upon-a time" a bit specific. Raajan-Naagendra
were busiest from about 1970 to about 1985. Then Hamsalekha (or
Hamselekha?) overtook the control from them in Kannada.
"These guys along with Chakravarthy were ruling TeFM until IR came into the picture and literally put everyone else out of business :-)"
These guys were not ruling in Telugu FM, rather it was Kannada
film music. The duo was identical to Lakshmikaant-pyaarelaal of
Hindi film music in many ways. The duo of R-N like L-P was synonymous
with melody and quite consisent high quality. R-N made occasional
forays into Telgoo in early 1980's. Chakraavarty too was ruling Telgoo
in the same period - early 70's to 1985. Only then iIlai Raaja started
to dominate even Telugoo.

av,
The film GURU they are talking about is a thamizh film released during early 80s. It had KamalaHaasan and Sridevi in lead role. The music for that Guru was also done by IR. The film GURU you are referring to is MalayaaLam film released in late 90s.

Hi outsider,
Congratulations to you for starting a fresh page for SG.Prolific music composers after MSV/TKR. Very true. Of their earlier compositions, En kadhal kanmani (Manjal Kunguman?), Poovinum melliya (kannan varuvan), AAdiyiley perukkeduthu(radha), Akhilamellam vilangum (amman arul)are some examples. Continue sir...
