I have always wondered this.
If age factor is the issue, how is it that Deva who should be the in the same age group, is able to command quite a following?
Please do not insult the yonger generation by refering to deteriorating music taste.
Although there are some youngsters who prefer Ilayaraja, the number is very small.
Most youngsters prefer ARR, Deva, HJ, SAR, Vidhyasagar, etc.
Generally Ilayaraja's genre of music do not seem to hold the younger crowd. Why do you think this is?

Hey don't be tough on IR maybe he don't want to spoil his sons opportunities. Therefore he might come up with not so good songs but he is and will be one of the best BGM india ever had/has.

The future of music is IR and only IR! The benchmark, the trend and the happenin all IR. In the new-age "world' outsourcing center" with all that money the young audience is going to dictate terms and standards. Only IR has met those standard and in the future composers will work from those standards, not the film music crap of vidyasagar, anu malik. Even rahman will be a thing of the past!

I'm a youngster whose parents came to the US in the early 1980s, so I am not very familiar with IR's music of that period, but what I've heard from that era is often very good. In the 90s, until Roja, whenever we went to India I would get cassettes of IRs albums. Chinna Thambi, Chinna Gounder, Chembaruthi, Dalapathi, Anjali, etc. Nowadays ARR is my favorite composer, but I definitely have a great respect for IR. He has composed many beautiful songs, as you all know. I'm not a fan of IR's new stuff, but "Sundari" from Dalapathi, among other songs, still gives me a chill.

this statement is not entirely true.....i have many frnds who still irritate me with IR.....my frnds who are of my age(21-22) still disrespect ARR.....ARR is really a hit with those ppl. who are not hypocrites, who accept that both IR and ARR r gr8.....my dad is a 52 yr-old man and he listens to ARR and nobody else's songs these days......the bottom line is that if u wanna listen to ARR u shuld be open to changes......

everybody here, pls don't get "angry."
After 10 yrs, we still have Rahman, Thank God for that. No complains no more, but i don't think ARR fans can still suffer from delusions.
We are still enjoying IR' magic even after 28 yrs & no one yet to beat this magician's illusion's buddy, don't see that happenin for long time to come.

Ok let me say this, most films today or in future doesn't deserve IR music, yes most of them are utter crap crap!,one of the reasons IR doesn't wish to do the magic of 80's.saying ir is old for young is just sh!t.what abt music from Kaadhalukku Mariyadhai or last 2min in Kavidhai Kelungal from Punnagai Mannanan or all songs from anjali.
Get it clear mates,he is gem who does'nt like publicity like others do now.he is selective(reason are above).

ir gives music, ever melodius and can hear it any number of times. timeless, matchless.. greatest ever and the greatest you will ever get to hear!
Arr gives and keeps coming out with good sound thru sound engineering.Sound is shortlived.
There is a lot of difference between good music and good sound.
youngsters beware!!!

Ilayaraja's music doesn't appeal to the younger generation because they have deteriorated music taste which is reflected in their likes for the western trends (except pops). Infact, they doesn't deserve it!.IR's music is eternal and these youngsters doesn't have the brain to interpret it..they just nead hard beats to dance upon..whatever crappy numbers with screechy voices comes with beats are welcomed a lot by them. Great musicians like ARR and VS are forced to do crappy numbers(Eg. BOYS) to satisfy these people. This situation has reached the pinnacle in Tamil.

Music can survive only thru evolution. People always want innovative stuff and not rehash or repeated tunes. The main problem of IR is that eventhough he didnt rehash/re-use his tunes much, he didnt evolve with time. That doesnt mean he should change his trademark style. But he should modify his style to suit all kinds of audience.
After all music is for anyone. It is not good to compose music for older/younger generation alone. In this context, ARR is a total success. He makes music for any age group of listeners.
