I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Wah!Naana paadauvathu is a superb one.I would imagine SPB and VJ smiling at each other like gladiators during the swara singing. The LRA humming was the replica of the background music during Sarithaá intro in Maro charitra.Sri devi did the mal original.
Mounathil by BMK stole a march over other songs because of its extrordinary situation.
I have also not seen the "Veenai sirippu".Both Therottam and "Veenai"are percussionist's delight. The ghatam usage in "veenai" is memorable.
Thengai acquired premature senility and Thangarangan,Porter Ponnusami,Sriramajayam were some of the by-products.But MSV, despite feeling the heat from IR's surge managed good ones like ÜdhadugaLil unathu peyar.

Saram "Sara"maai Vandha Ninaivugal...Flashpoints and Flashbacks all criss-crossed into one long braid of memory!
Your write-ups on VJs songs is, much like the singer, irreplacable. And when the links are a click into tattered time, the fabric that unfurls is one of joy, discovery, amazement...and seamless magic! More power to you, more ink to your pen!!
The one thing that ties all these songs together (more than the other things that also tie these songs together) is the unfettered and soaring exuberance in the rendition. MSV and VJ - Pace with Grace - nnu sollannum!
Saramsaramaai Shenbagapoo...What can I say? I saw Porter Ponnusaami. Such burdened memory! (of course, the irony was nowhere in sight during that matinee!) Saramsaramaai...flows like a flood of flowers...a pashmina of petals...a vivid sensory (and verbal - mark the pace and clarity in VJs syllabic colours) experience.
A balm for the backache of "port"able memory!
Padhinnaru Vayadhinile...Another song that came back with the first line. How many years since I heard this one! Reminded me a bit of Neerada Neram, Ennai Vittup Pirindha Kaadhalan, Naane Vettaiyada Vandhaen, Ganga Yamuna Saraswathi...
I am glad to have it in my collection now!
Naana Paaduvadhu Naana - Everything that was good about TFM just two decades ago. Ago.
Veenai Sirippu - I prefer this song to all the others in the film (NPN is an obvious first-rater, Therottam is nuanced and moving, Mounaththil Vilayaadum is solemn and heavy) Veenai Sirippu takes the metaphor of that phrase and makes it the ever present laugh-line which runs through the entire composition. The music of laughter - poetically preserved.
I have a special liking for songs in which VJ makes a "what a voice!!" entry. It happens here too:
Vizhi Orangal Kadhai Paesumo
Thaen Amudhena Mazhai Vara
Naadhangal Uruvaagumo?
And again:
Ilaiyodu Malarena Dhinam
Ullangal Uravaadumo?
Iruvarum Oru Nilai Pera
Deivangal Thunaiyagumo?
(The same astonishing acumen can be heard in Saramsaramaai chorus - Tharai/Sadai, Manak/Kedak - Pitch/note/syllable perfect every time!)
The website file of this song is a tad high on the decibel and I'd be indebted to anybody who can provide me with "less-volume" copy...Thanks in Advance!
If I remember right, Noolveli was "inspired" by Aa Nimisham (IV Sasi??)

Saravanan,
Thanks for the new instalment of the Chronology and for the rare songs. I have never heard "pathinARu" song before. saram saramAi has been a long time. Every time I listen to "nAnA pAduvathu nAnA" I feel like the way I felt listening to it 25 years ago. It is a song that never wears on me even a tiny little bit.

Saravanan / CV / Others -
Don't know if I've shared this file with you, but I found it in my collection a few months ago
It is an unusual song, an urdu ghazal of a
different shade.
The song begins with a superb recitation (just VJs voice, and a wretchedly atmospheric synth that never quite shuts up) and then the song races
into a fast-paced ghazal, which is,like, a rarity.)
Highlights are the opening(impeccable) - and here are a few other random
examples: Jao Ab So Raho Sitron; Ab Junoo' Hadh Se Badh Chala Hai, Ya
Yuhin Bhuj Rahi Hain Shamme...
http://f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/naaz99/vwp2?.tok=bcVe7bTBNFRD8bdL&.dir=/&.dnm=Baat+Bas+Se.mp3&.src=bc
(And, get this: You are about to hear a "groove" ghazal...about a break-up! ) Please let me know if the song and the link works for you :-)

Naaz, what a find! Great song, never listened to a fast-paced ghazal before!
A song about a break-up, no doubt, but VJ doesn't overdo the anguish, on the contrary, she paints a heartwarming picture of resignation to the fact of no-comebacks, and the strength that sorrow bestows upon some.
The opening soulful 'recitation' is full of fine moments--the repetition of 'tuje pyaar karti hai meri duvayein' is perhaps the finest.
The hightlights are as you have listed, I particularly liked 'dard ki raat dal chuki hai'.
Btw, doesn't 'shamma' mean light/candle?
Hope CV comes up with yet another of his brilliant translations!

Saravanan -
Glad the link worked for you.
Your summation is precise and succinct. How does the heart warm to a picture of no comebacks? Only by valuing the experience for itself, leaving bitterness behind. Shamma is Light/Flame (candle in most instances - melting, molten and medieval - all in one strike!)
CV -
Hope these lyrics find their mark:
Opening Recitation:
Machalti Hai Seene Me Laakh Arzooein
Tadapti Hai Seene Me Laakh Iltijaein
Taghaaful(??) Ke Aagosh Me So Rahein Hain
Tumhare Sitam Aur Meri Wafaaein
Magar Phir Bhi Ae Mere Maasoom Qaatil
Tujhe Pyaar Karti Hain Meri Doaein
Tujhe Pyaar Karti Hain Meri Doaein
(End Recitation)
Baat Bas Se Nikal Chali Hai
Dil Ki Halath Sambhal Chali Hai
Ab Junoo' Hadh Se Badh Chala Hai
Ab Junoo' Hadh Se Badh Chala Hai
Ab Tabiyath
Ab Tabiyath Behal Chali Hai
Baat Bas Se Nikal Chali Hai
Dil Ki Haalath Sambhal Chali Hai
Ya Yuhin Bujh Rahin Hain Shamme
Ya Yuhin Bujh Rahin Hain Shamme
Ya Shab-e-Hijr Tal Chali Hai
Baat Bas Se Nikal Chali Hai
Dil Ki Haalath Sambhal Chali Hai
Jao Ab So Raho Sitaron
Jao Ab So Raho Sitaron
Dard Ki Raat Dhal Chali Hai
Baat Bas Se Nikal Chali Hai
Dil Ki Haalath Sambhal Chali Hai
