Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered P.B. Srinivas thro' musicindiaonline.com. His voice is so clear, deep and rich. He seems to have sung many old songs. Was he a a recognized artise in his time? Did he receive any awards?

Yes yes & yes. Kindly do a google search in this forum & find about more of this master.Unfortunately people of this generation do not know about PBs. The loss is definitely not PBS'.

Uniqueness of his voice.I hav never seen people imitate PBS to near perfection.
may be Jayachandran is in his clone.
Listen to "mounamey paarvayal oru paatu"..taking the liberty and ornamenting the song..wow..antha loooow pitchil ethanai vithamana sangathigal..
and that "mmmm..mmmmm...mounamey"..ada da..
Think what will be his nilamai if PBS is a current singer..will he get any songs?:-)

Today I was listening to a very old sweet PBS duet song in
my collection which starts as
kaniyO paagO kaRkaNdO
kAdhil pAyum madhura mozhi
PBS voice seems to have had a very base tone in
his early days. Do you know which movie the above
song is from?

sK,
Kaniyo paago karkando...is a wonderful Pahadi number from Karpukkarasi. It is a duet with inimitable MLV. GR is the composer.
Punnahai/Vengayam,
Nice that PBS thread is revived. We can discuss in detail that wonderful base voice and the electrifying sangathis it produced on various occasions under various MDs.
BTW,anyone heard his Paada paada then paagai inikkum...from Bhaktha Sabhari? Such a scintillating melody ...the song commences with Jaijaiwanthi and meanders through Sahana with excellant brigas and of course a simple song. Who is the MD? Pentiala?

R Sundar- yes, 'Paada paada' is a lovely devotion filled song. I guess the film was dubbed from Telugu.

In the good old days of AIR & Tamil Sevai irandu , the majority of the songs used to be TMS. But the beauty was in programmes like iravin Madiyil, nenjil Ninravai(?) the percentage of PBS songs used to shoot up. Also as a child I had usually no say in which movie to go & so I ended up seeing a lot of Sambhar movies . the main saving grace was PBS. I got hooked to the voice.
PBS has the unique ability to combine softness with a masculinity which is hitkerto unmatched.(Gambiramum menmayum orungey innaintha kural)
I have goose pimples whenever I listen to Thennankeerin Unjalile. It is sheer bliss.
who can forget Nilavee ennidam nerungathe & the father of all male (that is why I alluded to father)duets Poo onru Kanden...
CVS-PBS & Sambhar combined very well. But the flip side is PBS got relegated to singing for the second hero.
Oruthi oruvanai & Entha oor enbavane are towo examples of the songlingering on inspite of the amateurish picturisation & Latchiya nadigar.
I can go on & on ad nauseum but somebody has to join in.

IMO, PBS was the forerunner of the Melody Wave in Tamil cinema. While the singers till then were no doubt great, they were deep-rooted in the Carnatic classicism which called for strong base and less softness. MKT, PUC, TRM,Trichy Loganathan, TMS et al were all illustrious singers belonging to this genre.
I guess the credit to bring in pure melody singing in Tamil cinema must go to AMR who preceded PBS into music - but even AMR had a certain base to his voice which prevented "TOTAL" melody. In that sense, I consider PBS to be the MelodyKing of playback singing.
PBS brought a touch of elegance and dignity to almost every song he rendered - I have heard ver, very few songs of his which could be called "Bad" song. He is akin to what Talat Mahmood was to Hindi cinema..
Some of my very favorite PBS melodies :
- Thanangeetru solayile
- Thulli thirindha penn ondru
- Indha mandrathil odi varum
- Malarodu villayadum thendrale
- Malayil malar solayil
- Yeno yeno yen
..and so many more..

Rgpm Sundar:
Thanks for the details on 'kaniyO pAgO'. I don't
remember the 'pAda pAda' song you are referring to.
Let me search for that song in my collection and
listen to it tonight.

Yesterday, when I was listening to a fast duet song of PBS with Jamuna Rani which starts as
kaNNum kaNNum pEsudhu - adhu
kAdhal pAttu pAdudhu
PBS does some wonderful yodelling which is as
good as that of Kishore Kumar! Which movie is
this song from?

sk- I think that one is from 'Thirudaathey'-1961.Music-SMS.
However, to experience to full range of PBS's yodelling skills, you must hear the song 'Padhumai thaano' from 'Koodi vaazhndhaal kodi nanmai'-1959.
Music by T Chalapathi Rao.

Song of the Day: NilavE ennidam nerungaadhE from Ramu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nilave.rm
- A great song sung by PBS. When SPB was asked by MSV to sing for voice testing, he apparently sung this song (there is a version sung by SPB in the SPB sings other songs collection).
- On PBS: http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/singer/pbs.html
An active thread: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/11570.22.12.48.html
- raagam baagEshri.
- An initial bit was sung by PS.
- PBS apparently remarked that he couldn't sing 10% of what MSV sang and showed him.
- this is one of the nila songs: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/23061.15:21:31.html

SK, Rpgm Sundar....thanks for details on 'kaniyO pAgO', a personal favourite. I had infact posted a query on this song in the 'statistics' thread. PBS is a master of sangathis and his brigas never knew that a word 'fuzziness' existed!!!

Thank you all for reviving the great thread.. one of my favourites is Chinna chinna kannanukku.. What a song and subtle expression in each stanza.. goose pimples everytime..another gem is Vanitha maniye from Aduttha veettu penn. perfect sangadhis and as SL mentioned no 'fuzziness'.. a master of voice modulation. His Kannada numbers for Dr.Rajkumar have everything - melody, devotional, fast and peppy, pathos, love etc.. his songs are real treat to ears..truly a genius.. thanks SK for the song links..

Kaumudi - The telugu original of 'Paada paada' is 'Yemi Raama katha sabari sabari, Yedi mari okasaari' from the movie 'Bhaktha Sabari' - wonderful devotional song.
Does any website has downloadable 'Enna Koduppan edhai koduppan' song by PBS - what a master piece?
