Why do these guys call it International INDIAN Film Academy Awards, when all they are doing is to honor HINDI films?
You all may want to write to the organizers at

Maybe, we should have our own "Indian Oscars" and only nominate Tamil movies.
Hindi movies can then come under "foreign movies" category. :)

>>>Why do these guys call it International INDIAN Film Academy Awards, when all they are doing is to honor HINDI films?
Right Question and an important one.
Indian means not only Hindi guys. These northies try to own the Indian word exclusively.
I am very happy that atleast ARR, knowing less of hindi, has become a major force in their domain. We should appriciate this with out any bias.
But, the question remain...does Indian means only Hindian.?

Interestingly, both were earlier nominated for Videocon screen awards & filmfare awards. I don't know who actually won.

admire your sheer audacity in stage-managing another back-slapping spectacle for the mediocre 'hindi' film industry while calling it the 'indian film academy awards'. ever heard of india being a multi-lingual society?
disgusting!

can we ever try and get across the message to these morons?

An excerpt:
"The IIFA, which honors only Hindi films at the moment, hopes to incorporate "elements of regional Indian cinemas", such as Malayalam and Tamil movies, into the main event from next year, Joseph added."
suresh, ur email worked. :-)

WN, I see this "incorporate elements.." as a slight worse than the original sin! Patronising, condescending...:(
I've written to Kelvinator/Electrloux in far stronger terms; if only our (regional) artistes have much more self-respect and dignity for their mother tongue, they should boycott this event en masse until parity is resored to regional cinema. Castles in the air?!

To organise another trite show for the all-gloss Bollywood fraternity, and to call it the "World's biggest celebration of Indian cinema" (not celebration of "Bollywood" or "Hindi" cinema) is not just a gross insult to the non-Bollywood Indian movie industry. It is indeed a callous reinforcement of the negative stereotyping that is promoted by the Hindi-dominated marketing-entertainment nexus. As though language cinema from Tamil to Oriya just didn't exist in your jaundiced worldview!
I read your blurb "endeavour that fosters exchange and interaction between Indian and World cinema.." An endeavour that bypasses the rich quality of "regional" cinema (as you would fondly tag it as opposed to the Hindi-speaking "national" cinema), that condemns the superior quality and technical finesse of the 'other' cinema to the margins, is condemned to be viewed as a backslapping, chauvinistic self-eulogy among the closeted minds.
And, if the irony escapes you, you had to hold it in Malaysia, a nation with strong Tamil roots! Where a Rajinikant might be a bigger icon that Amitabh Bacchan! You might not want to acknowledge this reality, oblivious as you are to the sentiments of the wider diaspora beyond the Hindi-speaking.
But, be warned, these sentiments are liable to find expression in the marketplace! Just as I would be prejudiced against Electrolux or Kelvinator products until parity and dignity is restored in such events (or the "Indian" prefix to the awards are removed), I'm comforted by the confidence that there are others who share similar strong feelings. Unfortunately, short of a market boycott, the marketing and PR machinery that props such sham symbolisms will continue to roll for some more time!
Have a ball in your splendid isolation!

It'll be nicer if we have a larger body of people writing to these jokers...:((

Good work. Nice to see that you have the language in your command to strike at these self proclaimed "INDIAN" artists and promoters.

And the worst part is that this jokers ahave the audacity to announce that Bollywood is the world's largest producers of feature films, exceeding 800 each year!
They conveniently include non Hindi movies to boost the numbers!
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Sun Apr 7 01:18:07 EST 2002
Suresh - Right on! But I also believe that the indiscriminate and easily "wow"ed tamizh crowd, with a limitless fascination for everything on the other side of Gulbarga, shares a large chunk of the blame. What's even more perplexing is that when you ask tamizhs to support and bolster their own ethnic talent and cultural vision, one is accused of being an "ethnic" purist! Haven't figured that one out yet.
If apathy is all we have to offer, then being subsumed is also what we deserve.

Suresh, just to give you an example of what I mean by "fascination": there is a thread in TFM which is a quasi-advocacy for importing Ismail Darbar to TFM! (this is, for all-purposes, purported to be a sign of tamizh tolerance and a celebration of diversity. Ahem!)

suresh, very strongly worded indeed.
Ur in India, rnt u? So why dont u organise some mass petition kinda thing to stir up more definitive response?

CF, Naaz, thanks. WN, I've been speaking (and writing) to a few people, and guess what? They (Wizcraft, the organisers) are bleeding, with TV revenues and gate collections hardly adding up. I think there's real opportunity NOW to put the squeeze on them now by pressuring the sponsors with some concerted communication. So that if it doesn't occur to these morons to be fair, atleast their 'masters'(the sponsors) coerce them to some degree fearing bad PR.
Whoever shares this concern, please mail

it'll surely help.
Can u believe Sadhana (only claim to fame being an atrocious haircut) got a lifetime award for her contribution to Indian cinema? Tragic, if the Adoors and Benegals are smirking, they're not letting it show. Look at the self-serving advisory board - Amitabh Bachchan, David Dhawan, J.P.Dutta,
Jaya Bachchan, Pahlaj Nihalani, Ramesh Sippy, Yash Johar, Vinod Khanna. And worse, AB gives himself the 'Personality of the year' award!
WN, news that might interest u - the event is being held in Oz next year.

Suresh - Here is a suggestion (use/discard as you choose,): You should forward your piercing letter to The Music Magazine (www.themusicmagazine.com). They are a well-respected and widely perused music journal on the net (from Bangalore) and they cover all music - Indian, Jazz, Hindustani, Classical etc etc - extensively. Their readership, I believe, is erudite and discerning. I think your letter should be read by all thinking and discerning individuals - both in (south) India and elsewhere. Reading - and reacting - are a good first steps to countering the blatant Hindi hegemony (money :-)?) which is both invasive and insulting to all artistes from the southern states. I hope you see some merit in this suggestion.
