IR's music in "Rasa Magan", "Adharmam", "Honest Raj"

  Just wanted to say Hello to everybody out here.
  I love this forum, I just wish I had a lot more time to read the stuff.
  
  TFM stuff:
  I had the misfortune of borrowing a few IR 1993/94 time soundtracks. The songs were so mediocre, I was dejected listening to them. ("Vaani Vizhi Vellam" - a S.Janaki song in "Honest Raj" was pretty decent. )
  
  Was 1993/94 a particularly bad time for IR or what?

  Honest raj had many bedroom number's,
  it is a very average album. But
  adarmam had few good songs. Even
  rehman once in chitrahaar told a
  song in this movie, he said he likes
  raja's style of rural beats.
  
  During 93/94 there was a

  rAsAmagan had 2 other wonderful songs. 'anju gejam kAnjip pattu' (SPB-SJ) and 'vaikAsi veLLik kizamai' (SPB). Don't forget 'muththu maNi' of atharmam. It is one of his very best. Moreover we cannot decide a year's perfomance from 3 movies. Off course, you can do it now b'cos IR does only 2-3 a year :-))

  I haven't heard Rasa Magan, Honest Raj but Muthumanu Muthumani from Adharmam was a great song.
  
  Which year was I Love India released (Sarathkumar, Priya Arora Dir Pavithran). This movie had wonderful songs. The movie was a mega flop. How about Veera ?

  Talking about Raasa Magan, H Raj, Asharmam, i dont know what good songs these movies had!!!Below average stuff!! When I was in India, i used to get annoyed over the repeat of one song from Adharman and Saadhu in various cable channels. Surprisingly, the public has left behind a lot of good songs of IR and cling to some of his most most average numbers!!!!
  But looking into IRs movies, one thing puzzles me!! One movie from him is so trash and the other one is full of great songs. He can as well score five movies in one year loaded with good nos. Late, reviews about Vaasuki are very bad!! He has to stop scoring for movies left, right and center.
  I do not know his intentions besides dabbu factor!! By signing more movies, he IS spoiling his image!!! There are albums like Kaadhal Rojave (one of the most average albums from IR!!!)that which only an IR fan like me can stand!! (Honestly, I did not like that album!! Routine stuff!!)

  About "Rasa Magan" songs, both "Anji Gajam" and "Vaigasi" are very average, IMHO. "Kathirunden" had a pleasant tune, but disappointing orchestration. BTW, who is the male singer in "Kathirunden" ? Is it M.G.Srikumar ?
  
  and I can't believe you guys think "Muthumani Muthumani" from "Adharmam" is being called great. By no means can it be considered great. It's all subjective and IMHO, of course :-)
  
  
  I recently heard a few songs from
  1) Marupadiyam ("Aasai Adhigam" and "Naalam Vazha". Both were pretty good.)
  2) "Raakayi Koil" ("Undanin Padal" . Who is the female singer in this song? good song, btw)
  3) "Maamiyaar Veedu" (two slow, but not very appealing songs. "Nalla Samsaaram" and "Ennai Thodana" with very routine tabla beats..)
  4) "Ponnumani" ("Nenjikulle", "Athimettlie", "Hey Vanjikkodi" and "Adi Pattam".. blaah)
  
  
  Are there any other (good) songs in these movies, that I should try ?

  DEV: If you like real sad songs, you should try anba chumandhu chumandhu from ponnumani. SPB has done a real good job on that one. I personally liked the first two songs on your list from that movie too. :-).
  You should try nallathOr veeNai seyhtE from marupadiyum. It is another good sad number.

  Some movies that had at least one or two GOOD IR songs that came out
  in 93/94 are
  
  (i) vaLLI - even when I think of yennuLLE pullarichchu pOiduthu.
  
  (ii) i love india - there is one very good song. the words escape my
  memory. maybe will refer and get back later.
  
  (iii) araNmanai kiLi - adi pUngodiyE pUngodiyE - what a great
  song. there is a funny song in this movie (malEsia vAsudhEvan?)
  
  (iv) ponnumaNi - anbach chumandhu chumandhu - probably one the
  lifetime best of SPB's.
  
  (v) kalaignan - endhan nenjil nIngAtha thendRal nI thAnA.
  
  (vi) chinna jamin - onappu thattu bullAku. there are some very
  different but rustic tunes in this movie.
  
  In fact, 93/94 was the period when, I believe, IR changed his style
  drastically and gave great hits. I am not able to recollect some more
  movies which I used to listened to a lot but am not able to
  recollect their names now.

  Kadhal Rojave has good nos like kAdhal rOjave... (SPB), manam pOgum..(Chitra and SPB)..
  IR is just feeling disgusted with the stereotype of movies with trash story content. Give him some good story, like kAAlapAAni...and he would prove his mettle.
  He is one of the best MDs not to have resorted to unethical practice of Tune Conservation unlike CC Deva and ARR.
  As a hard-core fan of IR, I feel a lot over his mediocre stuff, these days...That should not, however discourage you, guys. Just pick up some good numbers, with which he comes, very rarely these days.

  shankar are hiring him. what he
  gets at the most is some
  dream songs in big sets. He score
  for medium films like the ones

  1) "Kanneel Kodum" - (Tabla beats, but still good)
  2) "Nalla Velli" - (IR sounds awful and those tabla beats!!)
  3) "Manjal Poosum" - (starts very briefly and tantalisingly with a violin, then those table beats.., the tune is so old, this could be a 70s song..)

  1) "Siva Kami" (very routine tabla beats, but OK song)

  Not a single song with any kind of repeat listening value. Over reliance on singers like Mano, Arun Mozhi. Poor orchestration. Absolutely no attempt to innovate. Unfortunately these factors kill even songs with decent tunes.
  
  I guessed I borrowed a bad tape from my friend..
  
  May be next time, I will have better luck..

  I think you don't like Tabla. If you don't like Tabla, Violin, Flute and Guitar, don't listen to IR songs. You won't like any of them. BTW, how do you feel the same drum beats repeated by many MDs today?

  It's not that I don't like tabla or any particular instrument. But it's the injudicious and insipid (and repeated) use of any instrument which is disappointing.
  
  As I posted earlier in this thread, I listened to two cassettes of songs from around ten films and more than 90% of those songs were tabla based (that too very routine beats). It just doesn't cut it anymore..
