Ravi: Thanks for your prompt response. With your suggestion, I am starting this new thread.
Hi Friends,
I'm Nirupama from Vancouver, Canada. Since I visit this site quite often and have found out your passion for tamil film music, I thought this bit of information will be interesting for you.
With a help of a friend who hosts a hindi show on radio, I started my own radio show for tamil film music. Since there are no other tamil radio shows in Vancouver, I thought tamils living here might appreciate this. But to my surprise, I received many calls from non-tamils(White Canadians, etc) inquiring about this strange yet wonderful eastern(or fusion, rather) music. The show is only three-weeks old, and every week I've been getting these phone calls. I've described this type of music to the best of my abilities, but still their curiosity is overwhelming.
Some of their comments in their own words are:
"Hey, I love this music! What is it called?" , "This is great! Where is it from?" , "I like traditional Indian music, but what you're playing sounds very interesting!" Some even asked me for the film and song names.
In order to find out more about their music preferences, I tried playing songs from different periods, styles etc. What do guys think about this? Any guesses on whose music style or what type of tamil film music they like?? I'll talk more about that later.....
Nirupama

Perhaps I didn't word my suggestion properly. I was suggesting that you could help us out by picking up a few questions from everybody discussing here and ask your audience those questions. Poor, underprivileged souls like me could benefit that way by hearing more international opinions ;-).
You don't even have to wait for anybody from DF to give you a question to ask your audience. You may straight away find a couple of questions asked amongst ourselves here under various topics that actually make sense to your audience. You could pick out relevant questions and ask your audience for opinion and come back to us with the answers.
For example, I had suggested asking your audience whether they think that a particular song suits the lyrics to which it is tuned. Then, you can convey their answers here and we may find something new to discuss :-))
Another suggestion was asking your audience what they thought the high point of each song was and then conveying it to us to be discussed to shreds :-)

Srinath,
Ok, I think I finally understand what you're trying to say. Although it's a great idea, I'm not quite sure how many people will respond to this. I don't know how many of them will listen to this closely. But I can try and I will convey their answers to the DF, if I get any. Thanks for the idea, Srinath!

My humble suggestion. Can you play "Om Namaha urugum uyirukku" from "Idhayathai Thirudadhe" for the Canadian audience. I am sure it would mesmerize many people! Good Luck!

I sure will play that song as soon as I get a hold of it. I'm missing some good ones like these from my collection. Thanks!

Dear Nirupama,
Just a few days back, I read this review of an album titled
"NADANUBHAVA - Exploring the horizons of Carnatic music" .....
the reviewer , one Ms.Sulochana describes this album as "AN EXEMPLARY FUSION ALBUM, WHICH IS A MUST FOR ALL MUSIC LOVERS IN INDIA AND ABROAD" -
This album which comes as a CD- ROM has been reported to contain an exhaustive compilation of Carnatic music pieces from different eras...
I sincerely suggest that you buy this album not only for your Radio Show, but also for your collection. You may use it as a reference for your Radio Show......

Dear Madhan,
I can't thank you enough for your effort and consideration. I just finished reading through the album review. It is indeed an offer too good and tempting to miss. Any idea on its availability? I couldn't get any of that info. from the article? I would like to get a copy of that if possible. The best part of that album, in my opinion is that the comparative study on Carnatic, Hindustani & Western Classical. It's not only good for TFM, but will also be very useful for a multicultural audience. I remember you suggesting an audio cassette as well, something in the same line, "An Appreciation of Western Classical Music". Where did you buy that from?
Madhan, you do have formal training in Hindustani music, don't you? How about Carnatic music? What do you think is the main difference between these, in your own words? I only have the very basic training from Carnatic & Western(piano lessons). I lost touch with that too for the last 7 years. My mother actually bought me these books on Carnatic music - A Practical Course in Carnatic Music Vol.I-III. It is quite useful and it covers some aspects that are discussed in that CD-Rom. I only know that I have to learn a lot in this area, but when I have friends like you around it shouldn't be a problem, right? Thanks again, Madhan!

Nirupama & Madhan: You know what I am going to say. This place is for TFM only. If you want to talk about carnatic & hindustani, I suggest that you do it by e-mail. Or wait for the omnibus DF we are putting together. It should be up within a week.

Hi Friends, here's an update on SaReGaMaa(yup! that's the name of the radio show):
It was a regular week, no big surprises. Some of my regular listeners called and some didn't. My timing is all wrong, I shouldn't have started this program in summer as everybody is out in the evenings. Unusually, I'm looking forward to to fall and winter this year:-))) Another thing might be that not everybody wants to call the station.
Anyway, the songs that I played comes from the 60s & 70s. Predominantely, hits of M.G.R and some early hits of IR. George(the guy who talked to me 2 weeks back when I played some IR songs) called me again. Started inquring about the nature of this music. He might be confused because last time he heard more carnatic-based songs and this time he didn't. I was reminded of the conversation I had with Srinath regarding the nature of TFM. I tried explaining him that TFM is influenced by a variety of music traditions and it is not solely based on Indian traditional styles. From our discussion, I got the idea that he preferred more Indian classical music and he promised to call me whenever he finds something interesting. So, next week I might start with some good semi-classical songs. Any ideas/suggestions are always welcome.

Nirupama:
If you want to grab everyone's attention, I suggest you play Deva's biggest copies ! Then one person would hear it and spread the news that from Mozart to Michael Jackson everybody has copied from an Indian MD :-))))
One a more serious note, I think you can compromise on quality a little bit and play more catchy numbers. That way people might be able to remember them and not really have to strain their grey cells to accept them. Maybe we are all expecting too much from them too early. My favourite semi-classical number is "Ithazhil Kathai Ezhudum" from Unnal Mudiyum Thambi. Perhpas you could try playing this song. Hope you get more responses soon :-)
