While listing his favorite songs, Ramanan wrote:
"Even though i have all the songs mentioned above in my collection, bus la travel pannum bodu illa engayavadu pogum bodu namakku pidicha pattu oru rendu vari katrula midandhu varum. enga irundu varadhunum theriyadu. Ninnu ketkavum time irukkadhu. adutha vari ellam manasula padindu ...Ayyo andha anubavam..anu bavichu irukkanum ya... that is one of the things i miss very much after having come out of tamilnadu."
I was very touched by this "chinna Asai" of his:
bus-sil pogum pOdhu
pAttu kEtka Asai
Many of us have come out of Tamil Nadu/India, and I think it would be interesting to hear about the chinna chinna Asais of various people... the things we miss most... Nostalgia anybody?

On my first trip back to India, I stopped at Singapore for 6 hours before catching the flight to India. My cousin received me at the airport and took me on a train. Soon as I got into the train I heard the announcements in pure Thamizh. Ennai ariyaamal kangal theppamaagivittana. This is my chinna aasai--to hear Thamizh announcements when I least expect it.
I wonder how long Ravi will let this thread live. Let me get slightly back to DF stuff. Ravi, what happened to the Omnibus newtfmpage you promised us?

For the time being, we could even reminisce about music... if Ravi thinks this is out of line. For starters, I've always wanted to experience the annakkiLi-16 vayadhinilE-etc. phase of IR. I was a kid then and had no idea that such a revoluation was happening in music. Ippadiyoru chinna Asai...

Bharat, I was there fully being drawn in by every one of IR's tunes back then. IMO that was IR's Golden Period because he showed tireless invention and a vibrant indulgence in each song. These days I feel IR is measuring what he pours and not letting himself go as often as he used to. This could all be time, age, and reclassification of personal goals. Whatever it is, except for occasional bursts like the R.V. Udhayakumar movies of late, to me IR of pre-Sagalakalavallavan days is the best. And please, do not bring any animosity to this thread. This is my personal wish and reminiscence, no one can dispute that. If you differ from this opinion by all means post your favorite wishes and reminiscences.

I am sure an ardent fan of IR. But when ARR came with a bang on "Roja" and "Pudhiya Mugam", I should say that I forgot Raja for a while. I wish that ARR produced more music like that. Really, I did see the youth, fresh air and something more in the songs from Roja and Pudhiya Mugam. And, Maniratnam had also picturized Roja well.
Another precious movie I wouldn't forget is "Idhayathai thirudadhe" which I saw during my college days. Andha padam, songs kettuvittu manadhu migavum lightaga aanadhu. Sollave mudiyaadha oru happiness, oru light-heartedness irundhadhu. I am still longing for such movies which make an impression. As regards the movie, even though there was no such thing as a "story", the picturisation, music, fresh faces, were all good.

Udhaya, there doesn't seem to be any animosity so far. Why do you feel so?
Your chinna Asai was:
pre-Sagalakalavallavan pOl
IR isai indRu kEtka Asai
Likewise, irfan's was:
idhayathai thirudAthE pOl
inRu padangaL amaya Asai
Surely, these are fairly non-controversial :-)

There are a handful of songs that bring back sweet memories of my LMT (Light Music Troupe) guitarist days. Foremost among them is 'Maasi Maasam'. Let me state right here - by no means is this my favourite song or even in my top 50 list. But this song gave me something that I fear I may never have the opportunity to experience again in my life.
The LMT in our college had several false starts in the preceeding years. The year I joined, however, a pretty good set of instrumentalists came together in the fresh batch. The LMT had gained some notriety due to it's past performances and the organizer, who was my senior, warned us that we were nobody's favourites. As a result the LMT was the butt of quite a few jokes. On the night of the show (College Day), the organizer cheered us all up and we went with - not thumping hearts - but still a wee bit of shaky confidence on stage. The song started with two pretty female singers humming the 'seducing' sighs and as expected were met with cat-calls. Then started the humming along with the strings on the keyboard and the crowd went silent for a moment - and the next second there was thunderous applause everywhere, as the crowd realized that we were indeed going to give a great show. They remained attentive for the rest of the show, rising up and cheering as each song finished and the next started. I have never seen such open admiration and appreciation from any mass gathering since. I count myself as very lucky to be on stage that day. That day heroes and heroines were made and to date the LMT in my college is some kind of elitist group !
Everytime I listen to Maasi Maasam, I can hear the thundering ovation in my mind - and I know I can never feel such exhilaration again.

Hard Core IR Fans should start listening to ARR songs.
HCIR Fans should consider other mds around.

I get a feeling that the facilitator (Mr. Ravi) for this page is biased against IR.
Just look at the few postings here..one where there was a veiled criticism of IR and look at the failiataotrs posting immediately in support of that person.
the other..where someone has his wishes about IR fans..if it is his opinion that other Mds are great, thats totally fine. Let him not listen to Ir's songs...but if it someone else's opinion that IR's songs are still great and there was a group of people with vested interest who wanted to bring Ir down..why is it a problem for him..and look at the posting from the failitator supporting this person too.
But when IR is unfairly attacked and someone psots a response protesting against it, it is "censored"....can you beleive it..true to the indian tradition of censorship...it's a shame1
sometimes i feel that IR should have been born in another country where people would realize his greatness and appreciate his endeavors!
