Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

KSChithra for you, dear TFM fans!!!!!

With over 11,000 songs to her credit Chitra is one of the most accomplished singers in the south Indian film industry. The five times National award winner does not have the airs that are normally associated with a ‘star’. She is precise to the questions as she is with the octaves. She is currently on cloud nine as she had the rare chance to sing all the eight songs for Kareena Kapoor and has brought out the exuberance and grace of her character through her voice, in Sooraj Bharjatya’s Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. A quick chat with Chitra who has showcased her mastery in all styles of singing in this film. Excerpts:
Q: First of all tell us about Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon where you have sung all the eight songs.
A: (Smiles) It is ‘first’ of sorts to my credit, as all the eight songs for the heroine (Kareena Kapoor) have been sung by me. The “Chali Aayee” and “Sanjana..I Love You…” are already on top of the charts. Director Sooraj Bharjatya and music director Anu Malik has a lot of faith in me and I am deeply grateful to them.
Q: Did you improvise on the song Chali Aayee…
? A: Yes. I improvised on the song as Anuji and Soorajji helped me to add a lot of elements impromptu making it one of my favourite in the film.
Q: What about “Sanjana…I Love You…” which is the chartbuster in the album?
A: Soorajji’s concept of uncontrollable love was the song “Sanjana…I love you…”. Thanks to Anuji it has a western groove and I am told that it is the most fast paced song that Soorajji has ever shot. And after recording the song ”Bani Bani…” I even told Anuji that it was the best song in my life.
what do you think folks? maybe another song of that creep Malik may be her second best song and IR's maybe she can't remember

IMO the Main prem Ki Deewani Hoon songs are terrible to say the least. If Chitra really said that one of those was her best song, she is just trying to please Annu Malick. She will have atleast 2000 songs that are infinitely superior to these MPKDH songs, both in terms of the composition as well as her input as a singer. Take ANY song from her Tamil or Malayalam or telugu repertoire. There is simply no comparison. Or if we restrict ourselves to Hindi, then we can take "Chaliye Kunjanamo" or "Jahaan Piyaa Wahaan Main".
As an aside, Sardar Malick, Annu Malick's father was a very good and extremely under-rated MD. SM never became popular despite giving superlative music in many films, unlike his son who has been on the top despite all his ridiculous tunes and repeated plagiarisms. Why even people like Chitra want to praise AM to the skies is a big mystery. Okay, AM has a few good songs, there is no doubt. But most of his work is utter junk.

Hmmm...:-) Well, songs are different in studio and then in final form. But I too was suprised when I read that interview. I preferred Ashoka songs better. Anyhow, I seriously doubt Chithra was trying to flatter Anu Malik. But dunno where that comment came from:-)

LOL @ !!!! :-)
I have heard SPB rave (or rant - sorry) about some songs totally unworthy of any inkling of praise. One such song is "mere naina sawan baado". rajaG once in a convo mentioned that SPB had gone on and on praising that song on stage saying it was one of the best "shivaranjani" raga based songs ever composed. Well, he conveniently had forgotten his own classics (out of sheer modesty I would believe) like say , "naanum undhan uravai", "shivaranjini navaragini", "moongil ilai kaadugaLe" etc..and also other great singers' like KJY's classics (Ezisai geethame). I think these artists are just overwhlemed by emotions sometime that they do not care who they are praising. They just get carried away by the melody of the song in their mind momentarily.

Why knock Chitra? In the film industry, you are only as good as your last hit, and it is perhaps the only profession that is build entirely on the ethic of quid pro quo. Meaning: There is nothing like a free lunch!!
If IR offered Chitra many fine compositions, I am sure Chitra would like to believe that she also gave her best to those compositions.
Lately, IR has dumped his protege and has found a new muse in Sadhna Sargam. Being a quick learner, and knowing the industry's underbelly, Chitra has matched her master's betrayal: She has found new benefactors in Annuji, Ehsaanji, Shankarji, Loyji...
Surely what's good for the goose, ought to be good for the gander?
Moral of the story: Give back as good as you get.

Naaziji ;----)), Chitraji is smartji.... With her shallow voiceji IR found only an alternative to SJji' operatic voice. Otherwise, i personally didn; favor Chitraji instead SJji was sentimental choiceji. I preferred Kalynai Menonji (what happened to her) not Sunanda Menonji, Sujathaji over Kamini Krishnamurthiji, Jenciji over SPSailajaji (was good upto a point), Vaniji over Ashaji and Lataji. But, your right Annuji, Shankarji etcji all givin new lease of voice to Chitraji... Long live Chitraji KSG.
Naaz (you'r right) IR had reasons for dumping Vani Jayaram, SPB must have for Chitra. He didn't dump KJY, MV, SJ. In the process, destroyed many a charming song with Mano's voice. It shows that some amount of gratituge from the likes of was missin in VJ, Chitra KSG etc.. Personally I hate VJ for ruining what would've been a fantastic musical relationship with IR, it looked to me that only IR songs were suited for VJ, MSV were more SJ types. Alas, fate....

Mr.Naan sense : To some extent I can understand your views. Every fan excepts some kind of gratitude to be showered on their idols by people who've got patronage from them. I, too, am on the same boat. I am an fan of both IR and Chithra and I have never felt that Chithra had lost gratitude for IR because even to this day - in any interview - the first person she mentions about is IR and that is probably the reason why she chose her mentors - KJY and IR to inaugurate her digital recording studio a few years back when IR was not doing many films. That clearly proves it. Had she bothered about her chances, she could have invited any popular MD at that time.
Regarding the article, first we need to know if the contents were fully from her because we know how many magazines add a little spice and flavour to interviews and moreover lets appreciate others' likes and dislikes. As they say "Its easy to hate but healthy to love". So, in a way, lets be happy that Chithra was not a cause for some hatred feeling but instead appreciated someone (if the interview was true!) though its hard for us (including me!) to accept Anu Mallik a step above IR.
Being a fan of Chithra, I have seen a numerous interviews of hers on the TV and she has hardly said that so and so is my best song. She says she has numerous songs which is close to her heart and even to this day, she is reminiscent about "Edhedho" (Punnagai Mannan - music by IR) which continues to be one of her all time favourites. I feel the interview itself was very un-Chithra like (considering her earlier interviews).
Maybe the person who compiled the article should have been a fan of Anu Malik or a supporter of MPKDH to add a few of his own versions here and there.

Yes, I kinda agree with that. I should have considered that point before expressing by surprise (or disbelief or indignance) at this remark that KSC supposedly has passed.

Ravi, I agree with you wholeheartedly. AV, do you think sifynews.com has questionable credibility in reporting? Chitra must hve said: "this is one of my best songs...." the author must have employed gay abandon and sliced off one of? yes, it is is beginnin to strike as a possibility... hmmmm...... (however, if i may a bit of my own juice... i think sparks are flyin between Annuji and Chitraji - all 8 songs of Annuji to be gulped and thrown back into the recording system by Chitraji is indeed a matter of serious discussion.... plus, what happened to Alishaji?

naan sense -
Sure, singers/actors say many things in their interviews that are either misquoted or exaggerated or sometimes entirely fabricated (count the Tom Cruise law suits.) However -
What's to misquote or exaggerate in a direct statement like: Bani Bani is the best song I have sung. ??
What's to flavour here?
SPB went on record saying that current film music was a load of you know whats. Nobody raised a voice to say that was fabrication? Why the denial suddenly? Is this some kind of projection on one's part, an affront to one's own personal values and ethics? So Chitra's honesty is sometimes acceptable (when she praises IR) and not acceptable (when she doesn't praise IR)?
How many times has IR gone on record praising Chitra? Or how magnificantly she has sung his compositions? (for that matter, has IR praised any other singer besides SPB and the vada poda anniyoniyam??)
This is not some gurukulam. It is the film industry. And even if one were to consider this a slight, I'd like to say that just as much as the guru expects respect from her/his sishya, the sishya too (once s/he has proven her/himself) expects words of pride and marvel from the guru.
Let's start counting in this regard with IR.
And about the VJ-IR thing... suffice to say that if cronyism was preferable to professionalism (the same work ethic that paid rich dividends with MSV, KVM, SG, VB, CB RS, Arjunan among others) VJ did lose out. But that's another can of worms, and let's put a lid on it for good.
