Anbu - Ravi is absolutely right. FYI, the Kaviarasu pattam is given by the State. Kannadhasan is no more, so they have to give the honour to someone.
For instance, MGR is no more, but someone has to govern Tamilnadu and that's why you have the likes of ........ :-))
Kumar - Yengey romba naalaa kaanum? :-))
Doesn't the poovae aval koondhal manam solvaayaa? take you back to the Thiruvilayadal days of Pothigaimalai uchchiyiley purappadum thendral? :-))

Nanbargale, kavingargalin thiramaiyai oppiduvom, pattangal kidakkattum.
Vaanam Enukkoru Bodhi Maram

Aanal,Indru Vairamuthu oru formula kavingar aagivittar. (time for English) Ever since his rebirth under ARR, vairamuthu has only been writing songs of lists. Let me explain. Since chinna chinna aasai, which was a great hit and deservedly so, vairamuthu only compile lists of great attributes:
1)From Duet- a list of what is best in each category--kuliccha kutraalam, kumbitta paramasivam, etc.
2)From Puthiya Mugam-a list of what is good for what--kannukku mai azhagu, kavithaikku, etc.
3)From Minsara Kanavu-a list of what things one desires--poo pookum oasai athai ketkathan aasai, etc.
4)From Jeans-a list of all things that are wonders--Poovukkul olinthirukkum pani, etc.
5)From many movies-songs about lists of improbabilities:"Putham puthu boomi vendum, nitham oru vaanam vendum, thanga mazhai peya vendum", "MTVyil sashtikavasam nee padu, Disney landil vaasal thelichu arisi mavu kolam podu", etc.
Well, friends, you get the picture. Vairamuthu is an undoubtedly talented poet who may still have richness in him. But Vairamuthu is more a business man who knows how to recylce a selling formula successfully than a poet like Kannadasan who pours analogies and ironies like a wellspring. I have rarely heard Kannadasan use the same analogy twice. That is something Vairamuthu and Vaali and all the lesser poets can never claim.

on hearing VM's songs, i often wonder if tamil as a language is inadequate to express various sentiments that the songwriter has had to borrow usages from popular usage to 'eedukattufy' the shortcomings. Kannadasan was a great thinker. he had beautiful themes woven around a song. Idea was central to all his songs. One cannot but help notice how VM's songs are so word-driven while Kannadasan's were idea-specific. there must be little doubt who is superior. Kannadasanukku yen panivu kalanda vanakkangal.

Dear Udhaya,

Thanks for the reminder Amma,
I'm sure there are even more if we dig through all the new stuff. But I just wanted to show a trend emerging. I'm surprised to see that you were the only one to respond to my message. I suppose, not too many people expect profound lyrics in songs these days. I believe that when we the people accept a lesser song, it paves the way for many more to enter the arena.

hi friends,
sorkalin jaalamdhan kavidhai, illakiyam endru indha kaalathil oru ninaipu irrukiradhu. pattimandrangalil, kaviarangangalil ellam idhe trenddhan. idharku cinema'vum vilakalla.
One accusation that has been hurled at VM is that he has not written any (or many) thathuva paadalgal like Kannadasan. his retort that "it is a misnormer that only death is related to thathuvam. in my opinion love is also one, friendship is another ..." is also interesting.
I tend to subscribe to the view that all art is contemporary. it is not reasonable to expect a Sivaji or a TMS to emerge today and become a favourite. one should go with the times and i think VM is extremely saleable because of his ability to relate to the market needs. today's movies do not need songs like "veedu varai uravu" or "kan pona pokile". the trend is to have breezy songs with little or no lyrical value. let's accept this fact and not castigate VM for his lyrics. the crux lies in each one of us who patronise such themes and songs.
titles do not add value to a person if he has no intrinsic capabilities. i feel that there is an inate tendency to seek an identity in a title rather than add value to it. vairamuthu can never become a kannadasan and most importantly, does not have to become one. just by affixing a title that is normally associated with KD if somebody feels that he has scaled the peaks, then they are far from truth.

Adhil Artham Ullandu...
Hi pals,
I think it is very very unfair to compare two poets the one who is 'LEGENDARY' and the one who is 'SUPER STAR' . Kannadhasan should never be
compared to a modern day POET. Because even if they are capable of writing 'thathuva padalgal',
how many of the today's film industry accepts it?
I think the 'NEW WAVE' that stormed the industry
sometimes in the late 70's or early 80's (not sure!) made a transition to go from 'thathuva' to
'gramiya'+'western' taste. But the fact is VM
is extremely good in 'NOT' blending them together
and make a masala out of them. He is a definitely
'the best' among contemporary poets. But he is not
of the 'type' of our ever greatest Kannadasan.
25 years from now I would still listen to kannadasan, but I am doubtful about VM type of
songs.

Kumar Venkatraman i noticed you comments about my words. Thanks. If i start writing about Kannadasan by the time i complete(i doubt) there may be another VM who may claim for 'Kaviyarasu'. So i am not going to give 'Vairamuthu' title to others!!. But..i was thinking about anand's reply here..and may be we can call VM as 'Kavipputhi'. May not be meaningful in Tamil, but as he is great in Puthuk kavithai..we can not call him 'puthukavi' as he is an experienced on. So i just changed in Kalaivanar's style..so how is that
'Kavipputhi'. I would request TFM admin to find a good day to have a function and give the title
'Kavipputhi' to Mr. Diamond!!.
Muthu is rare to find..Vairam is hard to break.
But only we, TFM fans have to find it and make it fine to use it. Let us do it. Thanks.

This is to bring to the attention of TFM - junta + DFers the recent-expression of Kaviarasu. Let me first aplogize if I tend to disturb the posters of opposite gender. But my post intends , not to strain their faces, but to put before all the increasing obscenity in his poems. This refers to the "theendai, theendai" song.
If anybody has noticed, there is some "cheyyul" rendered (with a pathetic pronunciation) before the song . This refers to two words - "Pasalai noi" and "algul". The first one is known to many and I do not think there needs to be an explanation for this. The second word is unknown to many, I suppose. It refers to the female reproductory organ and there is "NO" other meaning. It is a "senthamizh" word for the same and is probably the worst expression by any poet. Be it senthamizh or kochchai thamizh, IMO, it is ridiculous to have such words in film lyrics.
Now that the poets are running out of creativity for finding lyrics, they either resort to "english" or "unknown senthamizh" phrases. I do not think the day is not far away when you will have the menial scatological expressions too in the lyrics. God save the lyrics !!
regards
MS
