Do movies run for 100 days these days? If not? why? Cable TV or Bad quality or Video Piracy?
I think only people who are in rural areas watch movies in theaters. I can recall some of the movies that ran well. Kamalhasan was never considered to be a masala hero. In Came Sakalakala vallavan. It ran for 250 days. His market picked up. Rajini was already a superstar.
Around the same time Payum Puli came. It ran only for 100 days. Some of my classmates who were rajini fans became kamal fans because of Sakalakala Vallavan. Kamal came up with another hit in the form of Thoongathe Thambi Thoongathe which ran for 250 days. Munthanai Mudichu ran for 365 days. Mudhal Mariyadhai and Sindhu bhairavi ran for more than 100 days. Salangai Oli ran for 200 days i guess. Payanangal Mudivathillai ran for 175 days. Naan Padum Paadal ran for 100 days.
Vaidegi Kathirundal ran for 100 days. Udhya Geetham ran for 100 days. Poove Poochudava started slowly and ran for 200 days. Thendrale Ennai Thodu ran for more than 100 days. It was a dream period. Mouna Raagam ran for 175 days. Fazil made an impressive debut in tamil movie with Varusham 16. It ran for 100 days in 15 theaters. Even junk movies like Naan Sigappu Manithan and Kakki Chattai ran for 100 days.
Then came Karagattakaran. It broke many records.
It ran for 365 days. Maniratnam enjoyed great success. I don't think movie don't run that well these days. Why is that?

"I feel like laughing the hell out of me when some kuppusamy and munusamy saying that tamil movies are better than english movies! We have to accept the fact that hollywood is better in every sense! They are more professional in their approach...They are more dedicated and they do a neat job"
I assume that you're talking about only successful movies. I would rather make a technical comparison than comparing them based on story. Munusamy, unlike u, may not understand the family sentiments, love, relationships portrayed in western movies and he may not be in a position to put ahead against the tamil movie (say vijayakant's) he has seen recently. Hence, the comparison scale does not find any match. About screen play, yes I agree. But I have seen the junkest of all in hollywood too. So don't lean too much on the otherside.

Shottu of all the points you made key point is they are dedicated. They pay attention to details. i also have the Beautiful mind in both version. But in DVD you get deleted scenes. Director's commentary. When you listen to the commentary you understand how much effort they put in each movie. They deleted some wonderful scenes just to cut short length. First thing we should do is delete songs from movies. There should be no songs. Only BGM. Nothing else. Songs waste atleast 30 minutes in any movie. But once the song is removed our MDs will be reduced to nothing as most of the current MDs don't know what is BGM. They should pay attention to each and every detail. The totally irrelevant comedy scenes should be removed. Balachander used to make near perfect movies. Panneer Pushpangal is an example of movie based on highschool love. Till date that is the best high school love movie i have ever seen. It was very satisfying. SanthanaBharathi and P.Vasu directed together as Bharathi-Vasu. Same P.Vasu gave out a crap called Chinna Thambi and Senthamizh Pattu in early 90s.
Balu Mahendra came out with some gems. I sincerely feel IR's score played a significant role. Mouna Raagam i saw like 11 times because of music. Thendrale Ennai Thodu 4 times, Poove Poochudava 12 times, most of the movies i saw for the music, especially back ground music. You get cassettes for songs. But you don't get anything for background music. So we had to watch the movie again and again and again.. to enjoy the music.

Despite poor screen play, it should still remain your memory that these movies had a record breaking run in theaters..right??

Well!!! How can i forget FliFlo!!! Including yours truly so many guys became fans of Kushboo after Chinna Thambi. Movie ran because of 'Thali sentiment'. Senthamizh Pattu didn't run that well.
Since it was Chinna Thambi part-II. Only difference is Prabhu was more ignorant. S.V.Sekhar had a field day in his periya thambi drama making fun of these two movies.

Shottu:
"But of course the piracy thing was not here :)"
I told the above statement when I was talking about the situation in the 70s.
But still hollywood is not crying! Hollywodd movie makers are not begging the people to come to the theaters and watch the movie! Y???
If this piracy catches on like mp3 songs, Hollywood will cry soon. IF POSSIBLE, they will go after all the p2p programs and shut down the network like they did to Napster.
The kollywood movie makers should realise that they in no way can match up with the hollywood!!!
Kollywood does not have to catch up with hollywood. Our culture is different and there are so many stories that could be taken as movies. I really miss Mahendran who gave unbelievable movies in the early 80s. We need directors like him to give life back to Tamil movies.

Shottu and others
Internet piracy in US is kind of underground affiar. Its mostly college kids and younger generation who have broadband access do it. It only takes out may be 1-3% reveneues. The is no commercial parties like local video store or Some MLAs some involved in piracy here, it it happens Movie companies will get FBI behind them.
But in TN video piracy is like a industry of its own. Even cable guys broadcast it.
TN films were lucky in 80s VHS quality was very bad and VCR was still a luxury in 80s life style.(VHS is superior in resolution than VCD!!)
80s movies were not that great in quality...all KBs movies were only hits in cities. SPM and other masala guys were ruling in 80s.
Its was just a time, guys...think of having one TV channel thats only on nights that too, after 9.00 it will become nasanal language!. I dont know how i was able to digest all those stupid movies in 80's. Now were all exposed to enough entertainment. I was once awake to watch remaining part of some movie (uyarntha manithan??)
till 1.00 pm or so.
verdict is TN movie market is down so they have to scale down and try to work with it. what else?!

Padam odarthellam erukatum.
Did you guys ever read a Thirutu VCD maker making losses?
Yes read an interesting article 2 years back where a Thirutu VCD player made losses after pirating Pallavans Thirutu VCD.
No wonder he shouted loud at Bharatiraja in the Tamil newspapers.

How does hollywood deal with piracy these days? Should tamilmoviemakers do the same to prevent piracy?
In my opinion many tamilmovies are so bad that they should be released on video and dvd right away.
