We are all lovers of good music . So naturally that must mean a good music system. Which is the best you have come across ?
High end systems like BOSE, ONKYO or some other thing like Kenwood.
I am thinking of buying one.
expecting your suggestions.

Depends on your budget.
IMHO : DON'T BUY BOSE ! There are much better systems available for less. E-mail me for more info.
I recently spent abt $3.5k My system : Marantz SR-680 receiver (Dolby Digital); Marantz cc-48 5 CD changer; Marantz Dual Cassette Deck; Panasonic A110 DVD Player. Speakers : Energy Pro 3.5 (Front); Pro 2.5 (Rear); CC-2 (Center); ES-8 Sub Woofer.
I use it for HT & Music. I listen to music in Phantom Pro-Logic mode

The low end of the high end starts with
NAD/Rotel/Parasound - for amps
PSB/Paradigm - for speakers
At the high end you can go for
Arcam/Sunfire - for amps
Thiel/Martin Logan - for speakers
But even with the low end you will start hearing the bad recording on Indian made CDs (the new ones are okay). This is my gripe with the Indian music industry. Especially it is difficult to get good CDs of IRs 80s music.

PG,
Sounds like you have got a good system.
But usually I suggest that people go for separates - preamp-amp-speakers.
Ofcourse, I do not have separates. I only have an Integrated Amp (NAD 304). I couldnt afford separates at that time. It doubles the cost of the amp subsystem.

PG,
What is the use of having such top class music
system if you are going to listen to IR's songs.
IMHO IR's recording is sub standard.

Yep!,
Aravind is right, to enjoy modern music you need to spend around $3500+, but except sound recording quality you will not get any other musical pleasures.
To listen to msv or raja it is enough you have $10, you will get all the musical pleasures other the recording quality.

I think aravind should listen to Guru or some recent movies of IR in a GOOD MUSIC SYSTEM to comment on the recording qlty.

New movies of IR seem to have good recording. As long as you record directly on digital tapes. It should be okay. But IR seems to be swayed by public opinion created by ARR that electronics is good. Kadhalukku Mariyadhai uses electronics. I would prefer to stick to the real instruments but record them well.

Ramanan,
You live in England ?? That's where most of the good music systems get made. I am planning to stop by in London next month on my way to India. I am hoping to pick up an integrated amp for my brother. Probably you can help me with locations of the shops.

Sound Engineers,
I think there is an acute of sound engineering talent in India I think. I think the booming software industry is to be blamed for this :-)

Ramanan,
I have decided to buy Arcam Integrated Amp here itself. So thanks for your offer. I have decided to fly via Frankfurt (saving $50 CDN). Arcams seem to be good. They are available at $400, $600 and $900 US. I might buy the lowest priced one for my brothers in India.
BTW, While listening to 'Iruvar' I found that LP click/noise have been added to 'Poo kodiyin punnagai' song at 4:20 and 4:58. Cute idea, isnt it. ??

How do you feel about Ilaiyaraaja's new albums
while listening in your audio system? Do you
see any improvements in his recording?

MPR,
I will answer the question directed at PG.
I have KM,Kadavul,RamanAbdulla with my NAD Int. Amp/PSB speaker combo. Sounds better than his prev recordings. I even like it better than Minsara Kanavu recoding, Iruvar is good.
ARR is using synthesised drums/percussion (IR is also doing now ..what a pity) that is why it kinda sounds so clean.
But KM is surely IR style back in new/high tech recording.

Ravi,
you probably also noticed the clock ticking sound in 'Innodu naan iruntha ovOru manithuliyum' song.
(I learnt a new technique yesterday to get more clean bass out of your speakers. put sand in big ziploc bags and put it on top of your speakers. Make sure the stands are sturdy though. I am assuming the stands are also weighted with lead shots or sand).

The latest IR albums KM, poondhOttam, NMH, veera thAlAttu, Kaliyoonjal, kumbakOnam kobaLu all sound excellent. HMV's kangalin vArthaigal is utter trash. thenpANdi seemaiyilE (I have 3 different versions !) is bad recording - seems to be im mono !
All tamil recordings arr/ir included are badly recorded in this aspect - they don't resolve the 's' sound properly. From iruvar/minsAra kanavu to poondhOttam, the 's' sound (like in 'sol'..) is recorded poorly - a lot of pisur. MK is a very good example. I am a ARR basher - but I have both cassette and CD versions of MK/iruvar/ratchagan !
Supposedly the 's' sound is the most difficult sound to record properly.

kiruba, pg:
Thanks for your reply. Recently I listened to
'agni natchaththiram' songs in one of my friend's
system (Technics). No words can describe
'oru pOOngAvanam' song. The cassette was recorded
pretty well with equalizer from CD in India and
sounds great to me. I was wondering if that song
in Technics sounds this much good, how it will be
in your system. Hope you guys are really enjoying
:-)

Well.. let me put it this way. I consider the money spent on my audio system as the best expenditure I've ever made. Even now, I lugged a 30kg bag of sand up to my 5th floor apt, filled my speaker stands with it. Also, filled two ziploc bags which are sitting on top of my speakers. I can surely feel a slighter better bass resolution. I am listening to 'pattaampoochi' song because Srikanth said he didnt like the drums in it.
Ahh..it is not drums man ..it is all synthesised percussion. The whole KM is full of it. I hate when people do that (even Eric Clapton). Anyways, KM has orthodox IR style written all over it so I am enjoying it.
I am going to India in Sept. Now that I have also located some audio restoration software. I am going to get all the CDs i like, especially IR's. Then it could be more fun.

PG, MPR, Arvind, Kiruba :
I have a Yamaha RX-V2092 Receiver,
Yamaha CD player and Tape Deck and Bose Acoutimass 10.
There is lot more music reproduction in such systems and even the old songs of IR seems to
sound fresh, new and different altogether.
IR's latest Albums KM, Poonthottam, Dharma,
Kizhakkum Maerkkum, has the sound quality
that is very much comparable to ARR's recording
technology.
I was listening to Maalaiyil YaarO manadhOdu paesa, the music reproduction is beautiful
and the recording of IR at that time itself is
simply great!
Not to deny that ARR's sound engineering is also
great! :-))

I bought Poonthottam CD. Yeah, recording is good. But too much of gimmicks. It looks like IR is showing off his new equipment. I hope he gets back to basics. The 'vaanaththu tharakaiyo" song is good except for the 'kannadipaalo' word in the lyric.
Overall, I think buying a good stereo system for listening to tamil music may not be a bad idea anymore.
(Ramanan, looks like you can get deals on stereo systems in the UK. I bought a 'what hi-fi?' magazine last week and found very deals on it. You dont see such deals in the US or Canada).
