Ravi--Testing Contd.
My posting in your "advertising & popularity" thread showed up now even tho it looked like it wasn't accepted.
However, the "En paattinilae Badhil Irukkum" thread is a total blank on my screen.

It worked now, tho a bit slower :-) I'm going to check out the "Badhil" thread to see if it's still a blank.

Folks ,,,
I am sorry for this delayed response to this topic. I was trying to post yesterday
but I could not see my postings. I thought it was one of those days for Ravi to do a
night out recovering the TFM Page. Today I am surprised to see all my postings have
gone thru and so also this topic.
I was actually scouting for a place to post some general stuff and I could not
think of appropriate thread name (Also On my way back from Vegas, I found a No Name Exit
in the interstate 70) hence this topic.
This thread can be used for posting misc info.. such as..
.. I was listening to Khalid's Album (Titled N'ssi or something like that) Guess
what I found! There came a song which sounded familiar and I traced it to
"Oh Shabba Oh Shabba adaicha kadavu thirakatha" (Arjun Starrer) and the next song
in the album had the exact intro music of "Oh Shabba Oh Shabba".
Either VidyaSagar has blended both these songs and given us "Oh Shabba Oh Shabba" or
Khalid has copied "Oh Shabba Oh Shabba" into 2 songs! Ofcourse it is highly probable
VS copied from Kahlid.

Gokul,
It was Vidyasagar who copied from Khaled in "Karna".
Sirpy copied from Khaled in "Ullaithai Alli Tha".
Deva copied from Khaled in "Arunachalam".

Whoever copied from whomever, O shabbA O shabbA, is an excellent
song. Some developments, measures in the song are very typical of
Persian music. I am not sure, if anything copied could be that
good. (Of course, there is thilOththamA in Asai.)
I heard mOghamuL songs last weekend. Absolutely amazing. aruNmozhi
has done a good job but shrikumAr is the best of the lot. manushan
seems to have a lot of potential. sollAyO vAith thiRandhu is an
amazingly beautiful song. Both jAnaki and shrikumAr have done it
justice. The two songs sung by yEshudhAs are very good but it looks
(hears?) like KJJ is losing his voice. His voice seems to
"break" many a time. Hope it's my mishearing and nothing is wrong
with his vocal cords. Can anyone who has seen the movie please
confirm if the song "nenjE gurunAdhanin sEvadi ninaindhu" is
sung after bAbu meets with that other famous student of his
guru in madras.romba nannA pAdirukkA reNdu pErum.
Another point I would like to make here (or should we start a
separate thread on this?) is that we (Indian audience) put too
much pressure on music composers. A good composer in India
is expected to come up with at least 10 filmi albums every
year and without any repeats or copies. This kind of expectation
is way above what can sanely be called expectation. This can
be correlated against the number of albums released by well-known
bands (like Pink Floyd, etc.) or individuals (like J.S.Bach if
you will - again he, Mozart, Saint Seans, are exceptions like,
hold your breath, IR.) which usually number in double digits over
their entire lifetime and even in those (at least I find) a lot
of repeats appear or only one or two songs in every album even good
to listen to.
Once we realize this (or is it again my misconception?) we will
stop calling any composer a copycat. After all there are only
seven swaras.
Regards,
aruLarasan.

aruLarasan:
Good point on the seven swarams. In an old TV interview, iLayaraja made the same point and demonstrated how some of his songs are "adaptations" of certain MSV tunes, with his(IR's) own signature style woven into them, of course.
Do we, the audience, consider "sampling" to be an inferior practice, even if the composite end product sounds great? Why?

I also feel that as the fans we are putting too
much pressure on our MDS. Even if a small
part of music is inspired from other sources,
we tend to call them as copycat. Is not sampling
common in pop music?. I think as long as
one is not copying note to note, and showing
some creativity of his own, it should be
ok.
I will be more happy to see lot of MDS scoring
few films, than few scoring lot of movies. But sadly
in TFM, so far the only few are shouldering the
burden, it is definitely affecting the quality of music.
